Another gift, a second small show of good faith. Maizie smiled, her face lighting up. "Thank you. I know you're trusting me with a lot, and I promise I'll be worthy of it."
In the back of her mind she puzzled over the meaning of his freenet name, wondering if it was a reminder, or a warning, or something else all together. She'd always been loud and expressive, the kind of person who hated being told to lower her voice or settle down. But for Ezra, in this, she could be the soul of discretion. Not a word to anyone about seeing him.
"Mine's M-A-Y-Z." She spelled out each letter, then added, "Like the month of May, and then just Z. Easy to remember."
It felt like he was trying to wrap things up now, and so she knew she ought to do the right thing and not drag it out any longer. Still, she wasn't able to resist throwing out at least one more thing.
"And I will. Stay safe, I mean. You don't have to worry." Raising a hand in farewell, Maizie couldn't help but feel this wasn't a proper send off. But the words to say goodbye stuck in her throat. "See you soon," she told him instead. That, at least had hope in it.
