"Are you dangerous?" Maizie replied, more intrigued than worried. She considered him, her eyes traveling from his head to his feet, and couldn't decide one way or the other. Appearances were deceptive. He very well might be dangerous, but there was no way to know from 30 seconds of conversation.
Aunt Day, if she were there, would've told her to be cautious. Savannah too, probably. Rather than reining in her impulse, though, this made Maizie want to give into it all the more. There were so many ways that every choice might go wrong, but you couldn't just go around writing people off without giving them a chance. A choice could go right, too.
And she couldn't let the world make her so hard that she'd chase away someone who might need help.
"I know it would be a risk, but I guess ... " it sounded stupidly naive to say her thoughts out loud and Maizie faltered, shrugging. "I guess you reminded me of someone for a second there. Besides, everything sucks enough on its own already; I'm not gonna add to it. You know?"
