Who: Nina Clarke, Amanda van Eeden, Daniela Diaz, and Bea Rodríguez
Where: The duplex in the UMCB district
When: Oct 3, noonish
What: Bea and Dani are interviewed regarding Doomplex.
It may be poor timing, scheduling an interview like this for Dani's birthday, but Nina knows her friend well. She's sure that if she doesn't force her to take the time to commemorate it, miserable timing or not, Dani's more likely to let it slide. Nina thinks that if she gets her face to face for this interview, it'll be easy enough to segue into something for her birthday afterwards, even if this is the first time she and Dani will be interacting in any other capacity other than friendship. And since Amanda's meant to interview Dani's roommate, too, it's decided that they'll do a combined interview. NINA: [She has a small birthday gift tucked into her bag, which sits at her feet, and she's hoping that holding this in the living room will help this feel less formal than it already does.] Thanks for agreeing to do this. I know circumstances aren't easy. DANI: [making a dismissive gesture] I'm not certain easy circumstances exist in this situation. Unless Bea has any concerns, I'm ready to begin. BEA: [nods along, pursing her lips sadly.] Yeah, we should just get it over. Like ripping a bandaid off. NINA: All right. [she's unfazed by the serious reception, all things considered.] Can you tell me where you first encountered the zombies on September 8th? DANI: Here, just a few blocks away from our home. Bea and I were walking back from work with friends when we crossed paths with a number of them. AMANDA: [pressing for a more specific answer, but gently] Can you estimate how many there were? DANI: [with a shake of her head] I didn’t stop to count. Just a few, at first. Then maybe half a dozen? It probably wasn’t nearly as many as it felt like. [she looks at Bea for a second opinion] BEA: [nods in agreement at Dani’s assessment.] Um, definitely more of them than there were of us. But obviously we got the door shut even with them trying to get in so it wasn’t like, a lot more. NINA: Let's back up a bit, if that's all right. Were you on your way home? BEA: Yeah. Dani and I were walking home from the UMCB and usually the timing works out that we meet up with our neighbor Cherry and her friend Max. They work at the Capitol in the Communications department, or whatever it’s called. NINA: So you only encountered a few at first. Can you describe what happened starting from that moment before you encountered the additional zombies? DANI: We were running. [her speech is very matter-of-fact, as though this were a historical event rather than something that happened to them just days ago.] The second, larger group of shufflers was ahead, coming toward us, and our paths met in the yard. Though we all made it inside, one got stuck in the door, and it bit both our friends before they managed to push it out again. AMANDA: And that was the only direct engagement any of you had with one of them? DANI: [begins to nod, but then stops. her lips purse.] No, actually. Max rammed one from the first group with his shoulder to keep it away from me. NINA: [she looks up at her friend with obvious alarm.] How close did the zombie come to you in order for him to need to do so? DANI: I don’t actually know the answer to that question. [for the first time, she falters] Close enough that he felt compelled to act, but I wasn’t even aware it was there until after Max jumped to the rescue. NINA: [she busies herself with her notepad for a moment, before she looks up. The expression on her face is faintly troubled.] Can either of you approximate how quickly they were moving? The ones in the first group, I mean. I'm not looking for miles-per-hour, here, just in relation to your speed at the time. BEA: Faster than I thought they’d be. AMANDA: They were shufflers, though, yes? You didn’t notice any runners or crawlers? DANI: [shaking her head] I didn’t. [she glances at Bea, but continues] They had the benefit of surprise at first, but once we began to run, the first group couldn't keep up. If the second group hadn't been ahead, so close to the house, I think we might have reached safety without any further issue. NINA: What about the zombies in the group ahead of your house? How did their speed compare to those in the first group? BEA: The same speed, I guess? I don’t know. They were just closer so it seemed like they were faster. I don’t know. NINA: [she's quiet for a moment, taking notes and reviewing them quickly, before she speaks up again to summarize:] All right. So the two groups met in the yard, both of them following the four of you, and then one of them got caught in the door. DANI: [after moment of consideration] Yes, I think that's the essence of it. AMANDA: [to Bea] Would you add anything else to this account? BEA: [frowns at the memory before saying] I tried to stab the one that was caught in the door with a knife but I got it in the shoulder instead of the head. That’s-- [she stops and looks down, ashamed] Max pulled the knife out and that’s when he got bit. NINA: He pulled the knife out of the zombie? BEA: Yeah. Because I-- [her gaze is still down, watching her hands fidget.] Because I messed up. DANI: No. You didn't. [she shakes her head, adamant] It was brave of you to try to stab the shuffler, even if it didn't work. BEA: [glances towards Dani, biting her lip nervously.] Would have been better if it worked, but… thanks, Dani. NINA: [offers them both a brief, sympathetic smile, knowing this isn't easy for anyone -- especially since it'd happened in their own house.] Did either of you see where he had been bitten? Where was he, in relation to the door? DANI: He was bitten on the arm, here. [she indicates the corresponding spot on her own forearm] And he was the one holding the door closed against the shuffler trying to get in. [there’s isn't much of the story to go, and so she summarizes quickly in a push through to the end.] Cherry was bitten next, on the shoulder, as she attacked the shuffler with the knife. However, it was Max who finished it off. Then we locked the door and called for help. NINA: All right. [she looks down at her notepad, thinking, before looking back up at them.] Do either of you have any questions for us? DANI: [shakes her head, and then glances at Bea again.] I don't. BEA: [meets Dani’s gaze before looking over to Nina and Amanda, shaking her head.] No. I’m good. So… we’re done then? NINA: Yes, we're done. [she clicks off the recorder and closes her notepad.] Thank you both for your time. |
