Who: Ruby Coldiron and Jane Rusten
What: Ruby learns a little more about the rules of Austin, Jane meets a new resident
Where: Some 'unincorporated' part of Austin
When: July 4th, late afternoon (backdated)
Ruby was no stranger to heat, but Texas was a new kind of horrible she already wasn't particularly fond of. The smell of the 'less pretty' parts of her new city was the same as every other she'd been in since the End of the damn world. Mildew and decay. Dust, and Death. Always death. The sickly-sweet stench of organic matter (meat) rotting in the summer had a tendency to stick to everything. There was a reason humans were naturally repulsed by it- where there was death, there was usually predators. By now, everyone alive had become much better tuned to those instincts, and Ruby was no different.
But she also had other needs.
Finding a place to keep hidden during the night had been priority numero uno yesterday , since the whole 'registering' thing presented to her when she arrived raised too many red flags to ignore. The rest of her crew had gone to check those places out, some with aliases, some not- all with the same priority to lay low. They'd meet up again in a week and pick a plan from there. In the meantime, there was what looked like an old army surplus depot that needed her attention. Chances were it had already been picked clean, but there was always a chance. Call her an optimist.
With sweat and dust stinging her eyes, Ruby made her way around the place. Quick and quiet as usual, she came out with a few forgotten boxes of ammo and a six inch bowie for the effort, but hadn't heard the sound of an engine on approach until she was right out the broken back door- right in plain damn sight.
Fuck. Threat or not, she rathered not deal with surprises. The bike was veering in a B-line Ruby's way- the driver had obviously seen her. Hiding back inside was an option, but the higher risk if she got cornered. Ruby would have to talk her way through this one. She threw on a timid smile and waved an empty hand at the motorcycle when it slowed close enough to acknowledge the wave.
A cop. Fantastic.
