Jane studied the woman, silently taking measure of her seemingly vulnerable air and sheepish admission. Despite her years of experience in the field and her natural intuition, Jane found the girl exceedingly hard to read. Was she actually new to town? Or was she simply unable to conform to the new government overhaul, like so many at the fringe's of Austin's citizenship? Either way, Jane's innate sympathies toward young women out on their own was at the forefront of her mind as she considered the woman's statement.
"Well, then I guess I should be the first to say welcome to Austin." Just because she wasn't sold on the girl's story didn't mean she wanted to make the situation any hairier than it needed to be.
"I know she isn't much to look at but our city has got a bit more civilized as of late. Don't see many people around these sad, old commercial structures anymore...not if they don't want to be picked up for looting." Jane's tone wasn't accusatory; in fact, her cadence indicated she was offering the newcomer an out. Even if she was ransacking the place, which Jane suspected she was, it would be easy to deny it out of ignorance to the new city ordinance.
