Who: Penelope and Sid
Where: One of the medical center kitchens
What: Attempting to experiment with the rations
When: Friday late night
Penelope had always had a hard time sleeping. When it wasn't stress or nightmares, it was her heart palpitations. Over the years, Penelope had always figured the two were connected. Stress creates anxiety, which often leads to generic panic attacks. Sure they hurt and would sometimes result in severe shortness of breath and coughing that would wake her up. But after the episodes passed, she could roll back over. It wasn't until she got to the medical center that she discovered what was really happening. Sometimes ignorance was bliss.
Rather than fighting it tonight, Penelope chose to instead get up and find something to do. More often than not, she would read. But since she hadn't had a new book in a while, she decided to wander the medical center instead. The raining blobs stuck outside was enough dissuade her from making the trip to the capitol for the books Graham offered her. So instead, her wandering led her to the cafeteria.
It made sense that food was significantly rationed and controlled, especially in a shelter as large as the medical center. But thankfully it didn't mean they would starve you if you wanted something that wasn't part of the three standard meals. Small stuff that was OK to spare. There was stuff already set aside for people like this. And when Penelope walked in, she realized she wasn't the only one up this late. Of course there were many who couldn't sleep or found themselves off in different parts of the medical center. Everyone had things that kept them awake at night; memories that haunt them or jobs to do. But, recognizing her friend and sometimes fellow supply gatherer, Penelope smiled and haphazardly waved at him.
"Hey, you," she said, heading over to him. "Please tell me there's somethin' worth eatin' here." If anything, Penelope was more than happy to just try to combine different rations to make something edible.
