"Yeah, I get that," said Penelope. "It's strange to have any sort of down time. It's like you're cheatin' or somethin'." Even though Penelope didn't quite have the work load and expectations that Lita had, she often felt as if any sort of down time like this was breaking the rules of the end of the world. But what more could someone really do at this point in time?
But she laughed a little at Lita's enthusiasm to watch the pot and bottle sink into the blob. "That's not fair," she said. "It got tossed in first. If we're going with those odds, I'd say the cig reaches the bottom first." But of course, it wasn't as if they could see the small butt of the cigarette from this height.
As the flower pot did turn out to win, Penelope feigned annoyance. "Damn," she said. "You win."
But even though it sounded absolutely absurd that these blobs were once people, Penelope wouldn't have put it past it. If blobs existed...who was to say it wasn't a person in there? "Unless it digested 'em," she suggested. "Or lost 'em. Some guy said that these things were picked up by birds or the wind and that's how they could've gotten in the sky."
