does it trouble your mind the way you trouble mine?
Who: Bea & Danny
Where: Fox Grove
What: Pre-expedition goodbyes, because Daniel is a worrywart.
When: November 2nd, evening
With plans of sleeping over at the hospital, she’d finished packing that morning and by mid afternoon, after double and triple checking everything, she finally deemed herself ready to head out. A swirl of nervous butterflies ricocheted around her stomach as she shouldered her backpack and made her way to Danny’s room to say goodbye. She never really left Fox Grove much unless she was out on supply runs -- and this sort of was a supply run, just… for longer and further away -- and she certainly didn’t leave all that often without Danny. Being separated from him for any length of time made her feel anxious, but it was something that had to be done. Nevermind the fact that she’d hardly seen him since Halloween, making their impending separation even more horrible to think about. She made the short trip from her room to his and hesitated a moment before knocking. No matter how awkward things were between them, she just couldn’t leave without saying goodbye. He really needed office hours, he thought. But then when he opened the door, ready to slip into the role of Head of Security and listen to another student’s grievances, he stalled upon realising it was actually Bea on his doorstep. Danny recovered quickly enough. It was hard to feel genuinely off around Beatrice, even on the heels of his drunken mortification (he preferred not to think about it, shoving it aside as a problem for later—they could deal with it when she returned, rather than open a can of worms they couldn’t close in time). “Hey,” he said, eyes drifting to the heavily-loaded backpack on her shoulder. As if she were on her way to a weekend cheer meet. “You’re off to the hospital?” “Yeah,” Bea said with a nod of confirmation. “They’re leaving early tomorrow morning and like hell I’m walking through the city before the sun is risen,” she replied before giving him an expectant look. “You damn well better not. It’s not safe before daybreak.” “Are we going to stand here awkwardly the whole time we talk or can I come in?” She asked, though it wasn’t like her tone was rude. With how well they knew each other, it was more teasing than anything, even if she was calling him out on his poor manners. He sighed, taking it in stride, then stepped aside and swung the classroom door open for Bea to enter. Jason wasn’t in at the moment—and Danny realised, suddenly, that he was pretty relieved. Whatever Bea ended up saying, this might not be a conversation he wanted to have in front of bystanders. While she slid her backpack off her shoulders and set it on the floor, Danny found himself taking her in: mapping Bea’s familiar face and features and angles, reminding himself what she looked like. Testing, perhaps, to see what the sight of her stirred in him. There was no conclusive answer, so instead he settled for a distinctive nod. “Look…” he started. “Make sure you take care of yourself out there. Right? Have Bryce and Tiny take point. Listen to Syd. And if Pinky gets a bad feeling about a place, pay attention.” It was so instinctive by now, lapsing into this sort of protective fussing. “Listen to Syd? Pretty sure she should be listening to me since I'm the one who actually leaves the school and knows what to do out there,” Bea said, scowling slightly. It wasn't she was unhappy about Syd coming along, quite the contrary actually, but as head of security Danny should've known better than to leave his best friend’s safety in the hands of a braniac. Giving her eyes a slight roll before looking at him, she said, “Don't get all Danny Downer. I'll be back in, like, a week. Okay? It's going to be fine.” He let those words wash over him, trying to force them to sink in and stick. One week. It was longer than he’d ever gone without checking in on his friends and loved ones, but he was going to have to deal. Bea was a member of the salvage team; she was athletic, had good instincts. She’d be fine. Or so he told himself. “Yeah. Okay. And—” Remembering something, Danny moved over to his desk and started rifling through the stack of books and papers. He found what he was looking for at the top: a single sheet of notepaper, half-filled with Bryant’s neat thin writing. “Bry’s supplies wishlist from the infirmary. I promised I’d get this to the expedition group, so you guys can add it to your search.” Your quest log, he thought, a bit sardonically. Bea took the piece of paper and folded it carefully before tucking it into a pocket of her backpack. Once the list was safe, she looked back up at Danny, not sure what to say or what to do. She supposed she should hug him and say goodbye, but there was just this tiny bit of weirdness between them and she hated it. Maybe some time apart would wash it away and they could go back to their normal selves. “Uh, so, I’ll see you in a week then. Take care of everyone here and don’t let Etty wear all my clothes, okay?” Her mouth pulling up into a smile at the thought. “Just give me a hug and I’ll go.” “The hug’s on the house, but I can’t promise nothing about Etty. You know that by now.” Danny’s smile was looking a bit more normal, and he didn’t hesitate before hugging her. As strained as things might have become, over something so freakin’ dumb and juvenile (he wanted to kick himself, rewind time until that embarrassing incident hadn’t happened), there was no way he’d shove her away. The hug was warm and genuine, clutching Bea tight for a minute. Before she inevitably had to leave, pick up her bag and start heading over towards the hospital and god-knows-what would in the wasteland. |
