Isaac just chuckled at her logic, not sure he saw it all that clearly, but it was benefiting him so he decided not to question it. And anyway, they weren't really the types of people who had serious conversations or bared their souls to one another. They were kindred spirits, going through grief together, and that presence of someone who could sympathize was usually comfort enough.
Shaking his head and tisking, he said, "C'mon, I'd never wear socks with sandals. In fact, I wouldn't wear the sandals to begin with. They just kinda look weird on dudes." All he ever wore was sneakers or the dress shoes he had for work.
His fish face dropped and morphed into a grin, quite satisfied at provoking a smile out of Avery. That was a rare sight indeed. Her laugh was like some rare mystical unicorn that he was pretty sure didn't exist, but he held out hope--like those dudes who thought Big Foot or the Loch Ness Monster were real. Following suit, he raised his cane and swung it at a lantern fixed to the wall, watching the glass spray across the room, then asked, "What were you studying in college?"
