Whoever had been there before them -- maybe even Avery herself since she mentioned that she'd been here before -- had picked the front hall clean of anything useful, leaving the decorative candle holders and oil-burning lanterns empty on the wall. It didn't matter too much, since they were still protected by the sun sitting high in the sky, but if they could find something useful here it would be a shame not to take it. Breaking shit was fun but so was surviving.
"Have I ever let you down?" He asked as he slid his backpack off his shoulder and unzipped it, producing a box of animal crackers. Holding it out to Avery, he held back a wince as a bout deja vu ran through his mind. They'd kept boxes of animal crackers like this in Rose's diaper bag. Isaac used to put on silly little voices and march them around, which always made his daughter laugh and Callie roll her eyes with amused affection.
Clearing his throat, he put on an amused smile as he asked, "Do you think vegetarians eat animal crackers? Isn't the rule something like 'anything with a face'? I guess these guys sort of have eyes," using the joke to push past whatever emotions were threatening to escape.
