It had been, if Avery was keeping track correctly, a month and two days since she'd last seen Isaac. This wasn't an accident. The last time they had spent time together, Avery had slipped into a comfortable contentment that was far too familiar and it had scared her. Becoming attached to anyone was dangerous and she knew that, so she tried her best to keep everyone away because it was easier than being hurt down the line and Avery had already lost enough.
Isaac was more dangerous than most though because in some distant, subconscious way he reminded her of Jonah and that meant she couldn't stay away for long. More than anything Avery craved the familiarity of her family, she missed that closeness and it killed her a little bit each day to go on with out it, so to get even a small semblance of it was cathartic. It was also incredibly painful because Avery had never honestly dealt with the loss of her family, not the way she was meant too and it held her back from living the rest of her life. So, yeah, she ran from Isaac every now and then but she almost always answered when he called. Almost.
This time she did answer though, she figured a month was sufficient enough to tuck away any familial feelings their last meeting might have brought up (she was wrong) and so she set out that morning with her own wasteland backpack. Avery's initial plan for the day had been to go up to the Museum of Science and Technology, which was about 7 hours away--6 if she was hurried, but she liked stopping in at houses-- and so she had to stick close to the city centre. It wasn't too boring, she'd been able to find a medical supply store and even though it had already been ransacked, she did find something for Isaac.
Arriving an hour early, Avery waited down the street and waited. This wasn't unusual behaviour for her because if there was one thing she liked doing, it was sneaking up on people and she was good at it. When Isaac arrived, Avery doubled back and sneaked up behind him, throwing a metal cane before him to announce her presence. "Brought you a gift," she said with a smirk. "Figured you might need it. It's adjustable and everything."
