Phone call
Who: Daniel Morgan and Charlotte Evans
What: Checking up.
-ring-
Charlotte answers rather hostilely. “Yes, what do you want?”
“Cut the brat attitude, Charlotte. I have a right to call considering you’re so intent on isolating yourself that my own head of security refuses to keep tabs on you. Can’t really blame her, but I’m your brother. You’re not going to be able to scare me away.”
”I don’t want to talk to you, Daniel. I’m sorry.” Her tone says otherwise.
“I honestly couldn’t care less. Sorry Charlotte, but your name being on someone’s hit list means you really don’t have a say. Being your brother means I have the right to check up on you myself and make sure you’re still breathing. Deal with it.”
”I’m breathing. Happy?”
“Ecstatic. Thank you.” His tone is flat, he wants to be more sympathetic but he doesn’t have the energy.
There’s a long pause. Charlotte knows she should be friendlier, but she doesn’t know what to say. Eventually she sighs. “Was that all?”
“I suppose it was, yes.” A short pause. “I’m sorry about what happened with Tristan, Charlotte. But you shouldn’t go out of your way to alienate anyone and everyone around you. I’m saying this as someone who loves you. It’s not healthy. Please keep yourself safe over there.”
”I...” Another pause, this time as she struggles not to cry. “I’m not, Daniel. I just need a break. From – from everything. All of this, it’s been non-stop for a year now, and I just... I can’t do it anymore. Not after he...” She trails off as her voice breaks, then clears her throat. Back to business. “Just give me a few weeks. I’m safe here. Dad has all kinds of enchantments on and around the cottage. I... I won’t be gone forever. Promise.”
“I understand.” His voice is much quieter now, with more of a sympathy edge than before. “Take all the time you need, Charlotte. We’re fine here, as long as you keep yourself safe we’re fine. I’m glad to hear your father has lost none of his touch. Stick close to him, please. For me?”
”I will.” Much stronger now. “I will. Take care of yourself as well. I’ll kill you if you die.”
“That’s completely counter productive and you know it. In all seriousness, try not to bite the head off people that are just trying to help. I know you’re not used to it, but you kind of don’t have a choice. We’re here whether you like it or not.”
”Yes, I... I know. Tell Laura I’m sorry about – I didn’t mean to... well. I’m sorry.” A sigh, and then an attempt at cheerfulness. “Have a good Christmas, Dan.”
“Don’t worry about Laura, she’s dealt with far worse. You have a good Christmas too, Charlotte. You’ll be getting some presents sent to you from the family. We all miss you. Talk to you soon? Sorry to say but I’ll be calling you weekly until you decide to come back. Annoying brother’s rights and all that.”
She doesn’t laugh, but there’s something of a smile in her voice. “Fine. Do what you have to, I s’pose. I’m not going anywhere. And I miss you all, too.” She pauses as she has a short debate with herself. “... Daniel? Who else is on that list?”
“I suppose I can tell you, I trust you not to spread it around... As far as people from Camelot go, that would be Alex, Laura, Claire, Julian, and Tristan. Don’t worry, they’ve all been warned.”
Silence, until finally: “Thank you. I have to go now. I’ll talk to you soon.” She hangs up.
