"Uh...Mum?" The small boy's voice called out but there was no answer. "Dad?!" Again no answer came.
Trent clung to the trunk of the tree he'd climbed up the night before. It was easier getting up the tree as a half grown panther than it would have been as a nine year old boy. Ford and Fred had tugged on him and tried to get him to not do it when they'd all come back. Now he was stuck. He couldn't figure out how to get down.
"Nate? Suzie? Anyone?" Little Trent was trying not to get scared. He was trying not to panic about being left in a tree for days. It was completely irrational because he'd turn into a panther again tonight and then he'd be able to get down. But then he'd be up there all day. "C'mon guys!"
A voice called back finally just when Trent started to whimper quietly to himself. "Trent?"
"I'm stuck!" He was beginning to sound incredibly miserable and was furiously rubbing his eyes across his arm just in case they tried to betray him with tears.
A shorts-clad Ford appeared at the base of the tree and looked straight up the trunk until he found his naked little brother. "Told you not to go up."
"I know!"
"Should I call the firemen to get you outta the tree?"
"NO!" Trent tried his best to glare down at his brother. "Just help get me down!"
Ford scratched his head and looked at the lowest branches. There was no way he could get to those like this. Two legs were way less useful than four were. "Think I better get Nate."
"No!"
"No?"
Trent pouted and looked embarrassed. "He'll tell mum and dad. And, and...then they'll be mad."
"They won't get mad just 'cause you're a dumb cat."
"Yes they will! Then they'll leave me in a weird forest or somethin'."
Ford frowned. "Can I get Fred? I can lift 'er up or somethin'."
Trent didn't answer, just nodded so quickly it looked like his head might detach and go flying all on its own.
"Okay, just, y'know, don't fall out or nuttin', kay?"
"'Kay..." Trent watched Ford leave and clung to the trunk even harder.
