Entry tags:! log, 1998-march, character: hannah abbott, x-character: tristan abbott

Who: Hannah and Tristan
What: Meeting, tea, chatting, etc
Where: Hogwarts
When: Backdated to Friday, 6 July, after his interview with Fleur
Rating: TBD - low, probably

Tristan was thankful that he was able to set up tea with his niece. He still couldn't believe that he'd gone on this long without ever knowing that she existed, but he supposed a part of that was his own damn fault for running away. He sighed as he left the French Embassy and made his way through the old halls of Hogwarts. He couldn't remember the last time he'd been here, either- it had been before he'd left for abroad.

He was led to a small sitting room not far from the Hufflepuff dormitory entrance. He entered, smoothing down his robes- Hannah wasn't here yet, but he also knew he was early. He'd come straight from his interview with Fleur, and there was a lot weighing on his mind-- he'd never once thought that coming back to Britain would bring so, so much change. How foolish it seemed now to think that it would be easy, that he could come back and settle into a quiet life on his own. He didn't regret any of the changes, anything he had agreed to- then again, he still didn't even know if he'd be chosen by Jo and Fleur, and he certainly didn't regret finding out that he had a niece.

The tea service appeared on the table, but he remained standing, admiring the artwork on the wall as he waited.

Hannah was nervous. Hand-wringing, hair-twirling, pacing-outside-the-doorway nervous. She didn't exactly have the best track record with her family, and though nothing in her communication with Tristan thus far had given her any cause to doubt, well... Her nerves didn't seem to agree with such things.

Maybe I should have changed out of my school uniform. Or done my hair up nicer. Or brought someone else along with me in case I-

Somewhere in the litany of worries, she stopped, and finally pushed the door open. She stopped just inside, studying the man there just as he studied the artwork on the walls. He doesn't look like my dad, she thought, idly- which, really, was perhaps for the best. Oh, if she had the chance to really study his face she might find similarities there, but there was no immediate instinct to run just by the sight of him.

Finally, she took a step, then two, forward. "Tristan?" Her voice wavered, though only slightly. "I'm Hannah."

Tristan turned as he heard the voice, and he paused for a moment. She didn't look an awful lot like his brother, but there was a faint resemblance to his own mother. He smiled, stepping toward her and holding a hand out in offering. "Tristan, yes. Hullo, Hannah- it's lovely to meet you."

He wasn't sure how she felt about hugs or affection, so he gave her hand a gentle squeeze and released it. "I- here, they've just brought tea, if you'd like to sit?"

"Tea, yes, tea is good." Well good job on sounding daft, there. Hannah's cheeks flushed, but she took her seat all the same, working on fixing herself a cup. She poured one for Tristan, too, but didn't add anything else to it- tea could be such a personal thing, and she didn't want to assume how he might take his.

With her tea sorted, Hannah drew one leg up under her as she sat, and studied Tristan over the edge of her teacup. "You're a Healer?" she asked, finally.

Tristan smiled faintly in amusement, pulling her seat out for her and letting her sit before he joined her at the table. He watched as she poured him a cup of tea and he reached for one of the little cucumber sandwiches, offering her the plate once she set the teapot down.

"I am, yes. I was working in Africa, until I came down with Spattergroit. But I've recovered and I'm settling back here." He offered a smile, reaching for the sugar to stir a little into his mug. "Have you thought about what you wish to do after Hogwarts?"

She took one of the offered sandwiches, but let it sit on the side of her saucer for a moment as she waited for the tea to cool a bit.

"I've thought of... a lot of things," Hannah admitted, finally. "I've been taking the extra lessons with Healer Bones, to see if being a Healer might be good for me, too. He says that I do well in his lessons, but... well, he also doesn't ever really say anything mean to anyone, so, maybe I'm not as good as he says?" Those were her own insecurities, though. "But- Africa! That sounds amazing! I've never left the UK."

Tristan watched her face for a moment, nodding slowly. He offered an encouraging smile. "I know Edgar, and he isn't one to lie or make things up. I'm sure you're doing well if he says you are. Is healing something you're truly considering?"

He smiled faintly, reaching for his teacup. "It was definitely interesting. I'll admit, I left the UK to try to deal with some things, but I really did come to enjoy my time abroad- I was really able to help people down there."

"It is," Hannah offered. She wasn't sure, then, if she'd actually said as much aloud before- to anyone. "I don't- I'm not always sure that I'm very good with magic, but- but I like the idea of helping people."

Which, from the way Tristan was talking, was perhaps something that ran in the family. (Odd, still, to think of family traits being passed down from someone else, someone new.) "What sorts of places did you go? I mean- was it all out in the wild, or cities down there, or- oh, I really don't know much about Africa at all, I suppose!"

"I've been a healer for nearly thirty years and I still feel sometimes as if I'm not that good with magic- I think there's always that little bit of doubt. Or maybe that's just me." Tristan offered a kind smile.

"Mostly small villages, under developed areas. I returned to various cities abroad for conferences and to make sure I was up to date on all current methods, but I mostly went out to smaller, less developed areas to help out."

Thirty years, and he still felt the way she did? Hannah wasn't certain if that was reassuring or daunting- though maybe the truth of it was somewhere in the middle.

"It's not just you," she returned, though she didn't feel as certain as her voice might have seemed. "I have NEWTs soon, and most days I'm just trying not to have a nervous breakdown the way I did for my OWLs!"

Hannah listened to Tristan speak of Africa- and she could tell that he missed it. Or maybe just missed the work that he'd done there. "Britain must seem very, very small after all of that, I think," she offered, finally.
