Who: Edgar Bones and Delilah Selwyn
What: Healing and being horrified
Where: Hogwarts Infirmary
When: Backdated to shortly after this.
Warnings/Rating: TW for some level of mention of physical child abuse.
Status: Complete

It wasn't at all unusual for Edgar to see children with interesting injuries; he was the Healer at a school full of at least partially-untrained wizards, after all. A day without some sort of strange bruise or burn or dissolved limb was in fact the odd thing out.

It wasn't even out of the ordinary for a student to come slinking in, carefully hunched around whatever injury they'd managed to give themselves, desperate to avoid the notice and future mocking of their peers.

Usually, though, they didn't write him before coming. Usually, if the wound was bad enough to warrant healing and embarrassing enough to warrant secrecy, they just showed up.

Delilah's message had, then, made Edgar a little wary. He wasn't sure what he would see when the girl walked through the door, but he was certain it wouldn't be good. Accordingly he set about gathering a variety of supplies while waiting for her, just in case, the better to have things near to hand when she did come in. Pain potions, skelegrow, a wide array of salves and ointments, his reference book of anti-jinxes: it was all in his office normally, of course, but getting it all out while he waited was something to keep him from worrying too much.

Delilah had been hoping for a way out. By messaging him, she thought, maybe he would say he's busy. She would lose her nerve to go. Was it even so bad, really? It wasn't so awful that she couldn't go to classes or anything, but she just... Didn't want the questions. She didn't want anyone to ask how she got them.

But he was free and she slipped out of her favorite hiding spot in the castle to hurriedly make her way to the hospital wing. When she got there she peeked in, relieved to see that it was empty. She continued on to Healer Bones' office, knocking very briefly before she let herself in.

Nothing about Delilah's appearance screamed that it needed to be healed. Her face was bruised and slightly swollen, her lip cut. She was shaking, clutching her wrist slightly as she stood awkwardly by the door. "I just don't want anyone to ask questions..." She said, pointing vaguely at her face.

Edgar took one good look at Delilah and then got up to shut the door behind her, though he left it open a crack.

"All right," he said, firm and gentle all at once while he looked over the girl carefully. The bruising spoke to some sort of physical altercation; those were rarer within the walls of Hogwarts than magical duels, but far from unknown. Teenagers, after all, were volatile. And clearly this wasn't something that had happened at Dueling Club or Quidditch practice. The need for secrecy belied those notions; and rarely did sanctioned activities leave the children physically shaking. Edgar's eyes flicked down to the wrist she was holding and then back up. "Come sit, Miss Selwyn. Let's see what I can do for you."

Delilah normally didn't betray emotions. She had been in this office more than once for Quidditch injuries and never said more than two words to Healer Bones. Talking to adults was dangerous, she couldn't get close to anyone. She did everything she could to avoid close friendships of any kind. This was more than any interaction she'd had with him so far.

Taking a seat, she looked down at her hands, trying to stop them from shaking. She didn't say anything else at first, just sort of staring at them, peeking up after a moment. "I didn't get in a fight." She said defiantly, because Delilah really didn't want her Hogsmeade privileges revoked. She touched her wrist gingerly again, going silent.

"All right," Edgar said, voice even and not particularly troubled as he began looking Delilah over in earnest. He reached out, slow and careful and telegraphing his movements deliberately, to place two fingers beneath her chin and tip it very gently upward. "You've been in here before, you know how this works, but I'll say it anyway: I've got to check for head injury, which means checking your pupils. There'll be bright light for a moment, try not to blink."

His movements were slow, deliberate. Her body tensed as he raised a hand to get face. His controlled actions kept her from flinching as he took hold of her chin. The last time an adult had touched her chin, it was an easy point to grab her face roughly and force her to look at something. Here, so soft, his face so kind. It made her heart break. The tears slid down her face and she pulled back slightly.

"Yeah fine. I know. Shine the light or whatever."

Edgar noted the tears but didn't comment on them. Delilah wasn't the sort that would appreciate it being pointed out when she cried. Instead he murmured the spell, the point of his wand lighting up so that he could check the reaction of her pupils to the light.

"Good, good," he murmured, voice carefully soft and neutral and soothing. "All right. Why don't you tell me what hurts most and we'll start from there."

This is why she hated coming here, even after a rough Quidditch match. He was so kind. His voice, so soothing. She could almost picture it was her dad, after getting hurt, back when she was small. Back when they loved her. It hurt, everything hurt.

"Nothing, I just, want this gone is all. I'm fine. Nothing hurts." Except her veins still felt like they were on fire, the burning in her wrist was nearly unbearable. "My lip, if I had to choose." Since it was cut and all, it was pretty annoying.

"Nothing hurts?" Edgar asked, sounding nothing more than mildly surprised. He lifted his wand to touch it to her cut lip, which began to close up a moment later. "That'll itch, I'll get you some salve in a minute. Nothing hurts, though? Not even your wrist?"

He nodded down to where she was clutching it, eyebrows rising in question.

He questioned her, and she dropped her gaze to the floor. His wand came to her face and she flinched, just the slightest. She did not have a very good track records with wands in her face and not ending in pain. There was a tingling sensation, then a bit of an inch starting to form.

"What?" She said, quickly dropping her wrist. "No, no it doesn't."

The flinch, the quick and emphatic denial, the secrecy with which Delilah had insisted on coming here- none of them were lost on Edgar. He moved away a little under the excuse of getting the salve; he offered the little pot of it to Delilah rather than trying to apply it himself. "Here. Put that on the lip. I'll work on the other bruises. All right, Miss Selwyn?"

She was blowing this. He was going to get suspicious, wasn't he? She couldn't tell - his face was always the same. He was impossible to read, and she took the salve from him with a wary look on her face, unsure of what to do next. Should she just go? The bruises... maybe she could lie, she was good at lying for the most part, wasn't she?

"Fine as ever." She replied, forcing a bit of a smile out as she opened the salve, gently applying it to where the cut on her lip had been. "Quidditch has done worse..."

Edgar inspected the remaining bruises carefully before reaching for another jar of potion, expression still neutral. He'd leave the wrist for last; he had a feeling that trying to examine it would spook Delilah, and there was no reason not to make sure the rest of her was healed before that happened. "I'm sure it has," he agreed, smiling just a bit. "In fact, I know first hand. You Quidditchers do become my most frequent visitors."

And Delilah Selwyn had never asked permission to come to the Infirmary before, much less spoken to him once here. This had nothing to do with Quidditch, and Edgar knew it.

"Yeah, well flyin' and dodgin' bludgers and all that, it's dangerous work." She attempted at a joke. She was actually totally abnormal, even she understood that. But she couldn't stop herself, she just kept babbling on and trying to just get everything all fixed up before she went back to her miserable existence.

"Um, Healer Bones, do you think, I mean. I do have... another request." She said quietly, as he finished up looking at the rest of her bruises and all that.

"Oh, I know," Edgar said, willing to keep up the conversation while he worked on her bruises on the off-chance that it would put her a bit more at ease. "I tried my hand at Quidditch a few times in my youth, Miss Selwyn. Never on the team, I wasn't good enough for that, but I played a few informal games with my friends who were. Even just doing that, I got smacked enough times to put me off the sport. I have the utmost respect for anyone who can stomach it." He paused, looking up to meet her gaze, his own warm. "Or, respect might not be the right word. I think you're all lunatics."

It was a joke and he smiled, but sobered quickly once she mentioned another request. "Request away, my dear," he said kindly, tilting his head a little in inquiry.

She laughed a little at the joke, even if she wasn't much for laughing at the moment. Or ever again. She cleared her throat and smiled just a little, despite the itching sensation that kept up around her lip, worse when she moved it. Or maybe that was just her being mental, she wasn't sure. He allowed her another request and she looked back down at the floor.

"May I have... a calming drought. For tonight, at least. To help me sleep?"

Edgar paused, all traces of merriment leaving his expression. He had a full stock of calming draughts, of course. They weren't something to be given out like candy, however.

Still. The odd request itself- odd from a girl who'd never once requested anything beyond basic healing- was enough to make Edgar think Delilah really did need one. "All right," he agreed levelly, going to a cabinet and unlocking it with an unspoken charm to retrieve one of the little vials he kept. He locked up behind himself before crossing back over to Delilah and offering it to her.

Only once she'd taken the vial from him did he continue. "I have a request in return, Miss Selwyn. I won't take the calming draught back if you say no, but I would very much appreciate it if you agreed." He paused long enough to crouch down so that he could be eye to eye with the young woman. "May I see your wrist?"

She was surprised that he agreed so easily. He didn't even ask her why. Sure, there were plenty who needed calming draughts every once in a while so she knew he had given them out before, but she had never said so much as a how do you do to him before, and he was just going to give it to her. She was thankful, and quite relieved that there was no interrogation.

Until he asked about her wrist.

The vile in her hand, she clutched it closer to herself and shook her head. "No." She responded automatically before adding in, "There's nothing wrong with it." Standing up, she smiled at him, but it wasn't convincing in the least bit. Delilah couldn't find any motivation to look anything more than broken.

"Thank you, Healer Bones."

Edgar sighed, expression flickering over to sadness. "If that was true, you'd let me look," he pointed out quietly. "You're quite welcome, Delilah. If you change your mind, or need anything else, my door is always open."

She refused to urge to bite her lip, and had to clench her fists very tightly and stare at the ceiling to keep from crying. He was being nice. Too nice. Delilah's weakness were when people were just... nice. She didn't get a lot of that, even with her friends.

"It's nothing that anyone can fix." She corrected, speaking about her wrist, as she hesitated in front of the door. "He'd find out anyway."

Hesitation was more than Edgar had hoped for. He looked over at Delilah, expression shading back to even. "Mmm. You might be right," he agreed carefully, "but then again maybe not. Can it make it worse to let me look?"

He didn't ask about the 'he' the girl was talking about. It would, he was pretty sure, only make her clam up and run away.

"I - well, I mean, I suppose not." It's not like he could see it. She closed the distance between Bones and herself, holding her arm out lightly for him to look at her wrist. Physically, it didn't look like anything was there. Just a wrist.

Edgar took hold of Delilah's arm, hand closing in a light grip around a spot several inches from her wrist.

She was very nearly right. Nothing physical was wrong with it, and for a few long moments he thought it was magically clean as well. The spell was deep and subtle and elusive, very difficult to notice even for a wizard and healer of Edgar's caliber. If he hadn't known there was something wrong he would have missed it.

But there was a trace; the hint of a sigil, buried deep as bone. Edgar couldn't say what it did, but once spotted he couldn't have missed it again. "Oh," he said simply, not letting go.

She had no idea what he was doing. She couldn't feel or tell anything, so she was quite sure nothing would be discovered. Until he said oh. Oh, like he'd seen something, felt something. She pulled her wrist back. "Oh?" She questioned.

"Oh," Edgar repeated simply. "I see something. I'll admit I'm not sure what?, and someone less experienced would miss it entirely, so you were very nearly right, Miss Selwyn."

Now it was her turn. "Oh." She replied, looking at the ground. He noticed something? What could he have possibly noticed? Fortunately, he didn't seem to know what it was. "It's nothing. I have to go." She turned to leave, her heart pounding through her chest. She should just tell him. But Kevin had told her to not let anyone else in on it, not tell anyone else. Did that include teachers? Healers? She was sure Kevin would change his mind, too, tell her they needed to tell. But she couldn't. Her father would find out. He'd find a way to get to her, even here. She just knew he would. She looked defeated as she opened the door.

"I'll be just fine." She tried to reassure them both.

"Delilah?" Edgar called, not moving to follow her with anything but his gaze. "It's all right if you're not fine. It's all right. I see you, Miss Selwyn. I'm here when you need me. And the Infirmary is here any time you need a quiet place. All right?"

She was fine. "I'm fine." She was absolutely, 100% fine. She was okay, everything was okay. She was fine.

She was not fine.

Tears she'd been holding back since the day before came flowing freely down her cheeks and she shook all over, just standing there crying. She didn't say or do anything, she didn't move. She just cried. She was so overwhelmed with the decisions she'd have to make, the secrets she had to hide, the fact that these secrets were leaking out all over the place and the carefully crafted life she had been leading was starting to fall apart, she was just done. She couldn't do it anymore.

This time Edgar didn't hesitate. He moved quickly, crossing the room to pull Delilah into a loose but loving embrace. He didn't say anything, didn't argue with her, just stood there holding her gently.

He rushed towards her, and when he put his arms around her Delilah was prepared more for pain than for comfort, and her whole body had tensed. Until it was fine, and he was really just hugging her. And then she cried more. Tentatively, she put her arms around him as well, pressing her face into his chest as she cried. For a long time she did nothing but just cry.

"I just can't do this anymore." She said quietly, after a long long while.

Edgar stood quiet and steady and unflinching while Delilah cried herself out against his shoulder. He was a Healer, and his job was to provide aid, and if he could do nothing else for the young woman he could be steady and let her cry.

"You don't have to do it alone," he told her, just as quietly, when she finally spoke. "You're not alone, Delilah."

"You don't understand." She replied, finally letting go, backing up just a little. "I don't care what you say, you'll - you won't want to be here for me." She knew it, she just knew when it all came out they'd all look at her like she was disgusting. And she knew that the teachers had some idea of her, that she was a good little Purist thing who'd violently acted out against the other muggleborns before.

They'd find out she poisoned all of Slytherin, too. They'd find out it all and they'd let her parents, the Death Eaters and everyone else, kill her. "I don't want to be here anymore, I just want it all to stop..."

"Maybe I don't," Edgar allowed, keeping a light grip on Delilah's shoulders but allowing her to move back. "Maybe I don't understand. You haven't told me anything, after all, so how could I?" Still, he shook his head, gaze steady. "I will give you that I probably don't understand, Delilah. But the idea that I won't want to be here for you? Banish it. I promise you this: there is nothing in the world that you could have done that would stop me being here for you if you need me. You can believe that or not, but it's true, and if you give me a chance I'll prove it to you."

He managed a smile, just a little one. "You've managed this long. What's a little longer? Please, Delilah."

"I don't believe that, I'm sorry. Everyone leaves. They might love you at firs,t but then something happens and it all stops. Nothing lasts forever." She knew that. Her own parents had loved her for four long, glorious years and then stopped. Daphne had loved her, and that had stopped. Calliope, Pansy, and Gwen would all stop when they found out, too. Everything good in her life had gone away.

And eventually, she knew Kevin would be done with her too. She was honestly surprised he wasn't done yet. "I can't tell you anything. But it's not here I'm worried about, it's - time is running out. I can't wait, the longer I wait the worse it's going to get and I can't hold on anymore."

"Mmm. I'll forgive you for that, as you've never tried depending on me before," Edgar said, trying another small smile. "Look, I'll do you a deal: I am here. Always. There's an alarm that goes off in my bedroom at home every time someone walks through that door," and he pointed, "so whatever time you come here, I can be by your side in thirty seconds or less. And if that's not what you want, if you need to be alone in a safe place? A hand-wave is sufficient to tell me as much. Consider this infirmary a haven, Delilah, if you'll have it. Any time you need a minute to yourself, any time you need a place to be safe and alone, or safe and with someone, it's here. I won't tell. I won't ask any questions. And the offer doesn't expire once you graduate. I don't lock my front doors at home, either. All I ask in return is that you try to hang on for a little while longer. Just get through one day. And if you can't, come here."

She had to take a moment to consider this. She had never been able to depend on anyone before, only herself. And her old hiding spot was one she could both be followed to, and where Kevin would appear once in a great while. Not that she minded Kevin, but sometimes she did just want to be alone. And she worried about what she was doing to him, telling Kevin all the things she had, him seeing everything he had. She was going to break him, she knew it. But Healer Bones wasn't going to be so easily broken, and he was offering. Telling her to hang on, just one more day - or one at a time. She nodded without saying anything at first, subconsciously agreeing.

"Alright." Delilah finally said out loud, looking up to him and trying to put on a strong face. "As long as you don't ask any questions, that's - I'll come here instead of anything else."
