Who: George & Percy Weasley
What: A pint is owed.
Where: The Leaky Cauldron
When: March 2, around 7pm.
Rating: Expected to be tame.
Status: In progress

George had been really, truly trying to get along with Percy these last few days. It wasn't easy, and it was slow going, but he thought they might be making progress. If he could tone down the sarcasm and Percy could smile once in awhile, they might even manage to have a friendly conversation over the pints that Percy was rightly owed for the hair prank.

George locked the doors and called back to where Percy was wrapping things up. "Don't worry about straightening up the fireworks section, I have to restock it in the morning before we open anyway."

In fact, Percy was in the fireworks section, beginning to tidy the area up. It was one of their best sellers, and Percy expected sales to increase as it got closer to the 20th, for people celebrating the Spring Equinox.

"Oh." There was a box in Percy's hand when he heard George's shout. "Alright." A little flummoxed, he put the box down where he'd picked it up - the idea of leaving the area in disorder made him uncomfortable. But George had invited him out for a pint, which Percy felt was good toward forging better relations with his brothers. And they were going on a pub crawl with the Gwenog Jones, former Captian of the Holly Head Harpies, afterward, which was a chance of a lifetime.

Going to the front counter, Percy asked, "Uh... shall I leave the receipts for later, as well? I could come in early to tally them, as well as count the drawer."

"Yeah, you're usually here early anyway, aren't you?" George could be punctual when necessary, but turning up early for anything was a concept he would never manage to understand. "We'll get it then. They're not going to grow legs and--well, okay, they could, but I think we got rid of all the lingering effects of that charm already." Occasionally, some of their experiments in the back room bled into the shop, and then you got things like paperwork that dodged your attempts to file it. But that hadn't happened for almost a month, so he was pretty sure it was solved for good.

"We'll sort the rest in the morning. I'm ready if you are."

Again, Percy was nervous about leaving his work undone, but he reasoned that this was good for him. Practice, as it were, at being less 'uptight' and whatnot.

Grabbing his jacket from under the counter, Percy said, "Yes, I'm ready. Although... do you think we ought to get Ms Jones a birthday gift? I was thinking she might like a Pygmy Puff?"

"Yeah, good thinking! Oh, wait, I've got an idea." George grabbed a bit of ribbon from behind the counter and transfigured it into a tiny green-and-gold scarf. It was a bit of a challenge to put a scarf on a pygmy puff, being as they didn't really have necks as such, but he draped it on a purple one in a sort of circular fashion. "How's that? Team spirit, yeah?"

He scooped up the pygmy puff, perching it on top of his head as he shrugged into his own jacket. "So how is the whole Vicky thing going? Am I allowed to ask that?"

Percy watched George struggle putting the scarf on the Puff, but decided not to pester his brother with helpful suggestions how it could be done better. "Wonderful. I'm sure she'll love her. Or him. How can you tell?"

The Vicky thing. "Yes, you may ask." Percy smiled a little, thinking about the last time he saw her. "It's going quite well, actually. We share a lot of common interests Last Sunday, we went to a Muggle art museum after having lunch. She's a wonderful woman."

"You don't really want to know the answer to that, but it's a her." Sexing pygmy puffs was a tricky business, which was why all of the shop ones had been marked with a little coloured dot behind the head.

George tried not to laugh at the look on Percy's face as they headed down the street. He had it bad, apparently. But that was a good thing! George was pretty sure they wouldn't be getting along at all if it weren't for Vicky. "Nice job, Perce. I really didn't know you had it in you." Which might have been a little mocking, but no more so than something he would have said to Lee or Ginny. Baby steps.

Outside, Percy checked to make sure the puff wouldn't fall off George's head, or blow away with a strong gust of wind. But the tiny creature had strong survival instincts and had used its claws to hold on tight to George's neon pink hair. Satisfied, Percy wrinkled his brow and stuffed his hands into the pockets of his jacket. He wanted to hold his tongue, but he couldn't. But instead of getting upset, he took a deep breath and calmly spoke.

"See, this is what I don't understand. Why you would say something like that. News flash, George: I'm not a virgin. You know I dated Penny. And after her, I went out with ladies at the Ministry. But the way you make it sound... 'I didn't know you had it in you'," he poorly imitated George's voice when quoting his brother. "It makes it sound like I'm an utter misfit. This is why I say you don't know anything about me. You, and most of the family, it seems, have this image of me that is based on perceptions that are askew."

George waved his hands in agitation. "That's what I don't understand, Percy! I say things like that to everybody. I say things like that to Lee, and Merlin knows he could get any girl he wanted just by smiling at them. I say way, way worse things to Fred. You're so concerned with proving you're not...whatever it is you're worried about...that it never occurs to you that it's not personal."

"I mean, you could have just said 'look who's talking,' and I would have said 'good one'--because I mean, hey, fair point--and it wouldn't have been a thing." George sighed, lifting the pygmy puff down from his head and tucking it inside his jacket--its claws dug in just a little too deep when he started getting agitated. "Look, we know you're the smartest, and that you don't have to make people laugh for them to like you. We know you're good at everything and you'll probably be Minister for Magic or something equally boring and important someday. And you know it too. Did it ever occur to you that we tease you for things that you know you're good at because it would be uncool to tease you about things that you're not?"

Automatically, defense mechanisms went up, and shown on Percy's body by the way his muscles (particularly the ones on his neck and shoulders) tensed.

"What the hell are you talking about? You and Fred are everybody's favorite! I'm the one who's uptight with a stick up his arse! You two are always getting the attention, having fun together and getting away with bloody murder, even when we were kids. And I'm nowhere near as smart as you think I am. At Hogwarts, I studied all the time, not because I liked it, but because I found it hard. The reason I initially met Penny was because she was my tutor. I know why I was let go from my job. Because I was irritating everybody in the office, the same way I seem to irritate everybody else. Even mum called me on the carpet, for arranging the sale of Uncle Gideon's apples to the Three Broomsticks without checking to see if he was okay with the plan. I always become enthusiastic over things, and it drives people up the wall."

George's body language was far less subtle--he tended to talk with his hands even when he was calm, which became practically a theatrical production when he was aggravated. He made a gesture of extreme frustration, opened his mouth to say something, closed it again, then finally sighed and rubbed his temples.

"Not us. I mean...you drive us up the wall, sometimes, but it's not because you're too enthusiastic. It's because you have this...it's like you're not allowed to have fun, and nobody else is either. And if you do have fun, it's like you're always looking over your shoulder to see if anyone caught you at it."

Halfway to the Leaky, Percy stopped in his tracks to turn and face George. "Since when have I ever stopped you or Fred or any of your friends from having fun? My biggest complaint are your trademark pranks, because I've been the butt of them for my whole life, making fun of somebody at their expense."

But something that George had said touched a nerve. Percy sealed his mouth tightly, as one of his largest defenses snapped into place. One that prevented him from even saying what was on his mind, out loud. Staring at George, the struggle in his eyes, he suddenly turned and started his pace toward the Leaky, deflated and unnerved. "We ought to get out of the cold," he muttered.

Now he'd done it. George jogged after him to keep pace, happy enough to get inside once they reached the pub, but he was not about to leave the conversation there. And as much as he wanted to say something like you do it every time we're in the same room together, he'd promised Vicky he would try. And he'd thought, just for a minute there, that they were making some kind of progress.

"Look, Percy, just--forget it, okay? I'm trying to say, I want you to have a good time. I'm happy you and Vicky hit it off. I'm sorry you lost your job, and if that was the reason, then they're idiots. Because if you're doing such a bang-up job at something you dislike as much as a joke shop, I'm sure you were really great for the Ministry."

They were making progress - even Percy could admit. This was the first time they'd begun to open up to one another about their emotions and insecurities, instead of simply reacting to one another. It was just that Percy was not ready to continue, to take it to the next level, to admit what he felt out loud, not just to George, but even to himself.

Percy adjusted the glasses upon his face and spoke curtly, "It's forgotten, nothing more need be said." Except. Percy stopped and turned to his brother, again, his shoulders visibly easing its tension. "Thank you," he simply said. He remembered something Vicky told him, that the Twins' pranking was done out of love. And while it was initially hard to believe, seeing the sincerity on George's face, he begun to understand. He grimaced at his own behavior and told George, "Let's... just... have a good time tonight. And take it in steps. I think I need to Transfigure my uniform. I really don't want to be seen out and about with Gwenog Jones in this tuxedo."

George was surprised at the thank you, but--relieved. Maybe they were getting somewhere after all. "Yeah, okay." Then he grinned. "Even I'll admit the tuxedo is a bit much for a pub crawl. Though Vicky did do a pretty good job on it."

"Perhaps for Halloween, or April Fool's." Percy looked down at himself. "I'll transfigure it in the lavatory. Is that what you're wearing?" he asked, noting George's clothes.

On the subject of Vicky, a smile appeared on Percy's face. "Yes, she did. She's a pretty incredible lady."

*hugs* Yes, yes, I know! This is on my queue of tags to get to. Between my internet being lousy today and prepping for the Big Event I'm baking for at work tomorrow, I'm very slow RP-wise. I have not forgotten our boys!

But I *do* thank you for the poke <3 <3 <3 Don't stop poking me! I need reminders like this, especially because if I know the other player is eager to continue, I'll be inspired to continue and not let it slide <3

TAG FOR YOU!

Yeah, sometimes it's easy to tag journal threads than to come up with scene conversations <3

FYI - Tomorrow I'll likely to be busy ALL DAY. I may be able to tag here and there, but for the most part, I'll be gone.

Oh PERCY. Vicky is gonna have to work on your self esteem.

And your ability to take a joke. Promise you won't get too upset when Fred and George get Vicky back for the hair.
