Who: Percy Weasley and Penelope Clearwater
What: Celebrating Penny starting Obliviator training
When: Friday, 26 February, evening
Where: Leaky Cauldron
Warnings: Naw

A light celebration among friends, that's what Penny had asked for in her journal. So of course Percy had to come, despite the fact he really couldn't afford it. He was even counting his Knuts when he went on his dates with Vicky. But Penny was one of his oldest and closest friends, it would be an affront not to show.

The last time Penny and Percy went out for drinks, Percy was drowning his sorrows after losing his job. Tonight, he nursed the same pint for the last hour, before deciding to get another. He separated himself from the group to go up to the bar, to find Penny already there.

"I'll have what she's having," he told the bartender, as he sat upon the stool beside Penny. "How are you doing?" he asked. "Was it tough, saying goodbye to your co-worke Invisibility Task Force?"

Distracted by the vast assortment of bottles lines up behind the bar, Penelope hadn't even noticed anyone approaching until Percy's voice placing his order startled her back into the present moment. She'd spent the week so consumed with lists of things she still had to do, loose ends to tie up, forms and papers and documents to sign off on . . . so many official, stuffy sorts of things that ordinarily made her feel very comfortably in her place had suddenly becoming dauntingly, endless tiresome.

The prospect of it all beginning again bright and early on Monday was not thrilling, but it had to be done, and it would all see her much happier by the end of it. And, for that matter, taking the time for a leisurely night out was not the time to be dwelling on these things at all.

So, Penelope smiled and waved a belated acknowledgement of Percy's sudden arrival at her side. It was good to see him in better spirits--frankly, she wasn't sure how much more of the languishing she could take, and had been fearing a repeat of her shortness with him a few weeks prior.

"Careful, it's quite strong," she advised him with a wink, hoping he wouldn't be in for an unpleasant surprise in ordering a duplicate of her own drink. "And it wasn't really, strangely. Well, I suppose part of it is that it's not really goodbye--I'm still in the DMAC, just shifting over a bit. I'll likely still pass the lot of them in the halls, maybe even collaborate on projects. There's overlap, at times, on consults and whatnot."

Smirking to herself, she took a slow sip of her drink and wrinkled her nose at the burn as it went down her throat. "And I can't complain much of it, they got me a lovely cake this afternoon. I ate so much of it I'm shocked I have room for any of this at all."

"What did you order?" Percy questioned, giving her drink a curious look. "And what did I just order? As long as it isn't paint thinner, I'm willing to give it a try."

He leaned his elbows upon the bartop as he waited for his drink to be served. "It sounds as though you didn't get much work done at work," he said, lightheartedly, then thoughtfully asked, "What made you finally want to make the shift. I know you've been thinking about becoming an Obliviator for a while. What's your motivation?"

"Tea Potion," she said, tilting her glass a bit so he could see the basil leaves floating on top. A concoction that involved an infusion of bubbly water, earl grey (or lapsang souchong, for the adventurous), orange liqueur, and--"Doubled up on the firewhiskey, though. How my mum always made them at family parties. You can imagine how well those must have gone."

Penelope pushed the swizzle stick around her glass, stabbing some leaves and muddling them at the bottom with the rest.

"Oh, it just felt like it was time. I'd been putting in inquiries since November, and Leander's been there for years, so as soon as he got wind he was really pushing me about it." Which, sometimes, would have made her set on taking her time. She'd had reservations about becoming an even closer coworker of her brother. They got on well, but she feared it might become strange, or awkward. "Plus, five years is a long time. I liked the ITF, the work was stimulating and I enjoyed it, of course, but it's not as . . . internally geared, as Obliviating? The mindwork has interested me for ages, though it seemed like a lot to master. Now I've got some of the mutual theory under my belt, though, and I'm surer of myself than I was when we finished school."

Leaning back in her seat, she chuckled and gave her knuckles a crack against the bar top. "Anyway, I thought there's no reason not to try something new. I'm young and have no one I've got to care for but myself. May as well take advantage of the freedom I have while I can, you know?"

Percy peered into the glass. "Oh. How interesting." He chuckled a bit. "My mum was known to mix beer with butterbeer. Well, I'm in a bit of an adventurous mood. Let's see how it tastes."

He listened to Penny, silently nodding his head. He was in a better mindset now than a month ago, to hear what she had to say, and to contemplate how her experience could apply to himself.

"Yes," he thoughtfully agreed with her final statement. "There are times I wish I could be adventurous, but I never took the plunge. Now fate's thrown me off the deep end of the pool, so to speak.

"How are things, besides work?"

She raised her glass to that, thinking it was a far better thing to go willingly into that deep end than it was to be forced. If this ended up being the wrong turn for her after all--well, there was time to correct it elsewhere, and she's likely be richer in character for the experience. Better to try and fail than to be left wondering when the time for opportunity had passed.

"Good. Boring, a bit, I suppose. Perhaps that's part of why I decided to move along with this now, to give myself a little shake." It would not do to complain of a steady, secure life, of course. With all she'd been reading of the latest news, stability was a rare enough commodity, and Penelope knew it was easily upset. To say her life was boring was probably a little ungrateful. "I put up an idea to WICCA with regard to how to direct some of the charity funds for the coming year, and it seems like we may actually move through with it."

She was a little proud of that; though it would be a group effort, it was still nice to have her thoughts recognized by people she considered her superiors in many ways.

"What about you?"
