Who: Ernie and Susan
What: Some time together
When: Sunday, 22nd Feb, early evening
Where: Hufflepuff common room
Status: Ongoing

Ernie had been worried about Susan for days, wince the situation with her father. It was hardly unexpected given everything that had happened, but he has still done his very best to ensure that he wasn't being too pushy. The last thing Susan needed was someone hovering over her checking on her constantly, even if that was precisely what he thought he should be doing.

Sitting in the common room his Charms text open in front of him, Ernie was a bit restless. Glancing up on occasion, he tried concentrating on his essay, making sure that he was still following the same line of thought. It shouldn't really be taking this long but he wanted it to be perfect. Working on the thing since dinner at least an hour ago now, Ernie wanted to be sure it was in order well before the duedate mid-week. Frowning, he dipped his quill in the ink pot again and moved it to parchment.

Susan had been just about out of her mind with worry and frustration. Both articles in the Daily Prophet did nothing to ease her worries, her father had almost been kidnapped, and her Uncle was being annoying and pushy. And she hadn't lost a single kilo in days, despite her very best efforts. And she had revisions.

But she couldn't concentrate on anything. She wasn't sure what it was - the worry, the light-headedness, the fuzzy feeling because she hadn't been eating, but focus was just not going to come to her. She'd been hiding out in her room nearly all day seeing it was the weekend, and finally she left her room and headed down into the common room, eyes falling easily on Ernie.

She walked up to him and plopped into the seat next to him. "Hey."

Ernie hadn't actually seen Susan walking into the common room, his back turned t the girls dormitories, so when she sat down next to him he was slightly surprised at the company. Glancing over he smiled, clearly pleased to see that it was Susan.

"Hello. How are you?" Ernie asked, looking at her in concern.

She loved the way he looked so pleased to see her, even if the expression turned to one more akin to concern than pleasure. When he asked how she was doing, she let her forehead softly hit the table top and audibly groaned.

She didn't lift her head or move. She figured that was probably the most accurate depiction of how she felt that she could give.

Any other time, Ernie might have laughed at the move. Given the situation however, Ernie knew better than to think it was any sort of usual frustration. Instead, he reached out and gently ran his hand across her back and gave her shoulder a light squeeze.

"I'll take that as a 'not well'?" He said with a frown. "Shall we talk about it?" Ernie asked, giving her shoulder another light squeeze.

She almost flinched when he rubbed her back. Susan wasn't particularly comfortable when anyone could actually touch her like that - in her head, feel how big she was. In reality, feel all her bones.

But it was Ernie, and she only tensed up the slightest before ignoring her usual aversion to touching. After another moment she sat back up, looking at him with a half-smile. "There isn't much to talk about - I don't even know what to say about it all. He's fine, and there's nothing we can do but sit here and worry about what might be happening out there, and I'm just feeling very useless."

Ernie felt her tense, and for a moment he considered moving his hand. When she then moved so did his hand and he placed it back at his side. He returned her smile with a proper one of his own. "You're not useless." Ernie countered. He supposed she had a [point, there was nothing at all for them to do, but he still hated the idea that she should be so hard on herself. "It's a difficult situation, we're all the way up here and you can't see him and obviously you feel like there's nothing that you can do, but what would you really want to do if your dad was here, right now?"

"I don't know. Aside from hug him? I just want us all to be safe, but there's no... predicting that. He's a barrister, he's tried Death Eaters. He's a target. My Auntie Amelia? She's even more of a target. I think the only person who's safe aside from myself is my Uncle Edgar." But then, she had no idea of her uncle's secret affiliation with the Order. "Unless they want to use us to get to them, then we're all targets." She had the tendency to think on the down side of things, it was her biggest fault.

Ernie listened as she spoke, allowing Susan to get her thoughts out without interrupting. Although her personally didn't have any family in danger, that he knew, he could nevertheless understand where she was coming from. After all, family meant the world to him and any looming war was quite likely to affect him and then as a consequence.

"You know you're safe here, right?" Ernie said finally. "And I know it feels like they're in danger, but I promise you, they'll be alright. They're both quite capable, surely." He was struggling to find the right things to say and he only imagined that he was saying everything wrong but then what could one say in such a situation. It wasn't right that she should have to spend so much time worried about her family.

"I know. You're absolutely right." She agreed, nodding her head. Scooting her chair closer to his, she rested her head on his shoulder and let out a soft sigh, closing her eyes.

"I am safe here, and they are adults capable of defending themselves. I suppose I just didn't expect him to actually be targeted, almost get kidnapped. And then, of course, that article in the daily prophet today. It's terrifying to think the war we all learned about could be starting again."

As Susan scooted in closer and rested her head on his shoulder, he shifted and wrapped an arm around her to pulled her closer. Looking down at her, he smiled pleasantly as she closed her eyes. This felt surprisingly right.

"I know." Ernie sighed softly. "It is terribly disconcerting. I suppose we can only be pleased that your father's okay and hope that he will continue to be okay." What he really wanted, more than anything was to say something that could make a difference. Only nothing could. So he briefly kissed her temple. "I really hope they're wrong, but if they're right we'll make it through."

Being close to Ernie - having his arm around her, the kiss that was pressed to her temple. It all felt nice, and incredibly comforting. Nothing short of a miracle was going to get Susan to stop worrying about everything all the time, but it certainly kept her calm for a while.

She pressed her face into his neck, finally wrapping her arms around him so that she cold just give him a full out hug, because it's certainly what she felt she needed. "You're really amazing, Ernie. Thank you." He was certainly a stand-up kind of guy, sticking with her when shit had hit the fan so quickly in their beginning relationship.

Ernie imagined that nothing he could say was going to stop her from worrying. It was natural and he was quite certain that he'd do the very same in her situation.

"Of course, Susie." Ernie said with a nod. He smiled quickly as her arms wrapped around him for a hug. He quickly hugged her back, letting his arms linger around her. "I'm here for you. Always."

She didn't want him to let go. Despite her natural discomfort at being touched, it felt really nice to be here. Warm, comforting. She didn't bother trying to move.

"Can we just... talk about something nice?" She asked, finally removing herself from his arms because - well, she rather thought because he might not want her staying there. She leaned on the table, elbow on it and fist propping her head up. "How was your day?"

"Okay." Ernie said with a nod, letting Susan de-tangle herself, his arm sliding back across her shoulders. When she leaned forward his hand slid down her lower back before he realised what he was actually doing and made himself move it. "Good, thank you. Spent most of it revising. Morag wanted some help with her Transfiguration so spent some time with her and then Lach after lunch. What about you? How was your day?"

She hadn't really minded the way his hand slid down, but she certainly wasn't going to say anything about it either. She stayed where she was, looking at him with the best smile she could really produce. "I stayed in here all day. I've been trying to study mostly." She sighed and shrugged just slightly. "It's been rather frustrating and for once, incredibly boring. I'm incredibly bored."

"You do sound like you need a break." Ernie said, glancing now at his essay that was quite clearly in no desire to be completed. Looking back at Susan, he smiled. "Well, what shall we do to alleviate said boredom?" Ernie asked, glancing around the common room to see if there was anything to do. "Chess? Gobstones?" He suggested, unsure of what else they could possibly do at the moment.

"We all do, really. The more breaks we can find between all these revisions and tests and study dates, the better." Which was not something you would have normally caught Susan saying, but things had been reaching a breaking point for her lately. She knew if she didn't ease up on herself, she'd absolutely lose it.

"You'd have to teach me how to play Gobstones, I've never really learned."

"Yes, I suppose we should." Ernie said, frowning a little as he said it. He didn't like admitting it, and despite all of the articles he'd read that breaks were a good thing (his mother seemed to think it was absolutely necessary to remind him frequently that he couldn't study 24 hours a day), Ernie still struggled at times.

"You don't know how to play Gobstones?" Ernie asked, blinking in surprise at the revelation. How was that even possible? Surely that didn't make any sense at all. He glanced toward the coffee table in front of the fire, then at Susan. Closing his book he pushed his chair back. "We'll have to fix that!"

"I will be right back." Ernie said, smiling at Susan. he leaned in gave her a quick peck on the cheek and bounded for his bedroom to grab his set. Walking back in the common room a couple of minutes later he held up the pouch and jogged back to Susan. "Here they are."

Ernie's love for studying and their dual inability to be able to take real breaks was one of the reasons Susan liked Ernie. The rare breaks the two spent together were quite special to her, though. She liked him when they were going to class, she liked him when he helped her study. But she really liked him when he helped her have fun and relax.

Ernie popped up to go get his gobstones set, and she laughed before standing up, hoping to move over to the more comfortable couch or armchairs instead of the table they were currently at - preferably closer to the fire, as she was feeling sort of cold. As soon as she stood up, the room kind of swirled in front of her and she swayed dangerously, clutching on to the table for support.

When everything righted itself again, she looked at Ernie and smiled. "Fantastic - let's sit closer to the fire, yeah? It's a bit cold in here."

Ernie was possibly just a little bit too excited to be able to show Susan how to play Gobstones, but then it was one of his favourite games and he was quite certain that the whole thing was massively under appreciated by the general public.

Back in the common room, Ernie was standing a few feet from the table when Susan stood and for a moment he thought she might swoon. Closing in the distance, he was at her side in a moment reaching out for her.

"Are you okay?" He asked softly, his hand on her arm to try and steady her. He nodded. "Okay, the fire's much nicer." He said easily though he still looked at her in concern again.

His excitement was catching. Even if she had just nearly fainted - that look of joy on his face at teaching her how to play Gobstones made her smile. She let him steady her, before waving off his worry. "Stood up too fast. I'm fine. I've been lazying about all day and then I jumped up." It was common enough that it was believable. She knew quite a few people who got dizzy if they stood up too quickly.

"Alright, Gobstones." She said, moving with him over to the fireplace and taking a seat near it, where the warmth from the fire attempted to take the chill off her small frame. She pulled her legs up onto the couch, wrapping her arms around her knees, watching Ernie set up the game.

"Are there a lot of little pieces?" She asked, wondering if this was going to be a terribly complicated game like Chess, which she did know how to play but found boring and overly strategic, or if it would be something a little more relaxed and fun to play.

Ernie nodded, accepting her statement, though wasn't sure if he believed Susan, not because he thought that she would lie to him, Susan Bones was certainly no liar, but perhaps because maybe even she wasn't aware of something being wrong. He was sure she looked a little peeky. Hovering a little he kept his eye on her and even offered his arm for the short distance to the fireside.

"Great." Ernie said with a smile as he allowed her to settle in her seat. Reaching for a blanket off a nearby seat, Ernie offered it to Susan. "Maybe this will help a bit?" He suggested before going back to the table to then set up the game.

At her question, he glanced up and nodded. "There are a fair few pieces, but they're essentially the same." Ernie explained as he fished out a few marbles to show her. "These are Gobstones, they're little spheres charmed to spit a liquid at you if you lose a point." Ernie explained. "You can play the games a few different ways but I think we'll just start off with Classic." Ernie added as he started drawing out the circles on the table with his wand, moving a few things to get more space.

She accepted the blanket easily, wrapping it around herself as she sat by the fire. She looked more than peaky - it had been days since she had eaten - but then she always looked a bit peakish. It was hard to tell with her sometimes.

"Oh, that's what this game is." She laughed, remembering when she had seen a few kids play it before. "Spits out a rather foul smelling liquid, doesn't it?" She knew now why she hadn't ever played it before. But perhaps she'd be good at it, and Ernie certainly seemed to like it. She decided to try it out anyway.

"Alright, let's go with the classic mode then so I can get the hang of it." Susan was quite smart, it wouldn't take her long at all to figure out how to play Gobstones.

"Yes, that's this game." Ernie said with a smile at Susan as she laughed. It was entertaining at the very least and he was pleased she was at least a little amused. "Yes, they do, so it really helps if you don't lose." Ernie grinned. "I'm sure you'll be fine though." He added quickly just in case she worried about getting struck with the liquid.

"Right, so the Classic version is where you have to knock seven Gobstones out of the circle before your opponent does." Ernie explained, lining up the stones whilst he did so. "It's fairly simple, but you have to have good aim." Ernie added. "Any colour preference? There's blue, yellow and red."

"Yes, I'm not a fan of losing to begin with so losing and being hit with some putrefied liquid sounds even less appealing." But it would be in good fun, and she could use some good fun. She wasn't the sort that liked to get dirty very often, but Ernie was so excited so... she decided to let that go a bit. Go for it, and see what happens. Maybe she'd even like it.

"Yellow." She replied, deciding to go for the more of hufflepuffish color, even if it wasn't gold. Close enough, anyway. Susan actually had no idea if she had very good aim or not, but now was as good a time as any to find out, right? "Maybe I'll get lucky and somehow my aim is very good. Let's see, then?"

Chuckling at her response, Ernie nodded in understanding. Yes, it gave him loads of incentive, though he hardly needed more since Ernie was generally the sort to want to win at absolutely everything.

"Yellow it is." Ernie smiled and arranged them, then selected blue on his own. "I'll take blue. So we'll place the rest in the centre." Ernie explained as he moved the pieces. "You go first, now try to knock at least one out with your stone."

She made sure she was still comfortable and warm, adjusting the blanket so that it still surrounded her but didn't impede her ability to throw. Once she felt comfortable, she took up the stone in her hand, watching as he set their pieces up.

"Okay." She said, a bit nervous. She tossed one of the stones, and of course - beginners luck and because there were so many, she managed to knock a single piece out. "I did it!"

"Good luck." Ernie said briefly before Susan took her shot. He smiled, pleased that she seemed so happy with her first try. "Well done!" He said happily, smiling at her. He nearly clapped but stopped himself shortly, he couldn't really make such a massive deal out of it. "Okay, I'll go." Ernie said as he followed suit, smiling rather pleased when his move a piece out of the circle.

He got his first shot as well, and Susan went ahead and picked up the stone again to try and knock another one of his pieces out of the circle. Unfortunately, this one did not hit nearly anything at all and the vile liquid spout out. She had just enough time to yank the blanket up and cover her mouth, but the rest of her face was not so lucky.

"Oh that is, that is unpleasant."

Ernie had to try unbelievably hard not to laugh at not only the look but Susan's move. It was unbelievably cute and she looked so sweet even when she was covered in whatever that liquid was.

"Yes, well." Ernie managed, a small smile twitching on his lips. "Perhaps losing is not a good idea?" He suggested, managing a straight face as he picked up his stone to roll it, knocking one out of the circle and smiling in triumph

"That's not fair." She scrunched up her nose, disappointed he wasn't covered in the stinking sap just yet. When it was her turn again, she lifted the piece and took a moment to aim carefully.

She managed to knock another one out, but just barely. She knew it would be okay while there were still so many, but once she got down to just a few Susan was pretty sure she'd be reeking to high heaven.

Ernie did his best not to laugh at Susan, if only because he didn't want to upset her, really. "You're doing quite well, Susan. Especially for your first."

When she managed with her next one, he smiled approvingly. It was his turn once more and he followed suit knowing another piece out. He was fine for the moment, but he had to remind himself not to get overly confident.
