Who: Amelia and Oscar Bones
What: Siblings hanging out
Where: The Leaky Cauldron
When: Saturday, afternoon; mildly back dated because Cal sucks
Rating: TBD
Status: In progress

As far as Oscar was concerned Valentine's Day was one of the more questionable holidays; he would much rather partake in Yule tides, or Halloween multiple times over confections and poorly timed dates. Of course, he dealt with it being he had a wife to give gifts to and a child whom seemed more than a little interested in the whole mess. That did not stop him from using it as an excuse to spend time with Amelia. They both worked within departments that were busy, and just got busier when holidays came round and he felt it all too natural to use Valentine's to get what he wanted.

Which certainly was not a bad thing. Not as far as he was concerned.

Oscar had been able to arrive well before the thirty minutes Amelia had given had passed, and ordered drinks before taking a secluded table, sipping the Whiskey that he had ordered, not in the slightest concerned with whether or not it was the time of the day to be indulging in liquor. Time was split between reviewing some case work that he had brought along, and sipping the drink, but when he first spotted Amelia entering the pub, Oscar shoved the papers back into his case. Letting it slid to the floor, he sat fully upright and waved to catch Amelia's attention. "Good afternoon, darling." He said once she was within ear shot. "Glad you could make it, I know they keep you busy."

Amelia had asked for half an hour's leniency before meeting with her brother, mostly to be sure that she had time enough to wrap up her morning's work. It wasn't that she never left the office, of course, but- as head of her division, when she did, she felt that she had to make sure they could get on without her. Even if it would only be for an hour or so.

She caught sight of Oscar once she entered the pub- hard at work, still, though he'd put his papers away once he realized she was there. (They had that work ethic in common, anyway.) Sliding into the booth across from her brother, she offered a smile. "Thank you for the invitation, Oscar. It's good to get out."

"It's good to see you on top of getting out. The offices get so boring after a while." Oscar commented with a small grin, before nudging a glass towards Amelia. It was butterbeer, simply because the man was unsure whether or not Amelia wanted something stronger. She had things to get to, he was sure, and being intoxicated would be her choice after all.

"So, how have things been?" Oscar questioned, lifting his own glass to take a small sip. Relaxing was in order after all, and he was glad to be doing it with his sister.

Though she may have wanted something stronger, a butterbeer was likely the best option for the moment- it wouldn't do to return to the office under the influence, after all. (And, truth told, perhaps she was slightly paranoid. Even if she didn't get drunk- because one drink, with food, certainly wouldn't hurt her- there would be those who might see it all differently. And it was very hard for Amelia to turn off the part of her brain that reminded her that she was always representing the Ministry, in some capacity or another.)

"Busy, of course," the response came easily, even if it wasn't particularly specific. "That tends to be the case across the DMLE- when the Aurors are busy, the Hits take up the slack. And after the attacks in Swindon the other day..." Amelia shook her head. The attacks in question may not have been public knowledge quite yet- but she had a feeling that Oscar had heard, one way or another.

"But we don't have to talk about work." After another drink, she laughed a bit and added, "We actually probably shouldn't. How are Evelyn and Susan?"

"Ah, I can imagine." Oscar liked to remain in the informative loop, and sometimes that meant slyly prying information from those that knew things he shouldn't necessarily. He simply liked to know what was happening, and the entirety of it.

A quiet, pleasant laugh escaped Oscar and he offered a small nod. "No, we shouldn't, huh? It's hard to turn off when that's how you spend your whole week, and day." The question about his family gave him pause, and Oscar swirled the contents of the drink before taking a long draw from it. "Good. Susan seem's to be growing into quite the worrier however, honestly worry a wee bit about her."

Amelia nodded her agreement. It was hard to turn off that part of her mind- something she had observed on her own, as well as something that had been pointed out to her by others on more than one occasion.

She noticed Oscar's hesitation when it came to Susan, and Amelia thought back the the conversation she'd had with Edgar on the matter. "As her father, I'd be worried if you didn't worry about her, in general," she offered, carefully, "but I think you mean more than that."

"Of course. Imagine how often dad and mum worried about us when we were off on our adventures, or at school." Oscar said after a moment, eyes shifting along Amelia's features, and he offered a fleeting, quick smile before setting down the cup of liquor and rested both arms along the curve of the booth table.

"A little. It is just a lot of ... small things, which when apart seem insufficient, but it is Susan and I can't help wondering if she's taking everything harder than it seems." Oscar tapped his fingers absently on the table, offering a small shrug. Edgar talked to Susan a lot, something that Oscar had not fully realized until lately, but he was unsure if Amelia did the same. "Has she said anything concerning to you?"

"Imagine how often mum and dad still worry about us," Amelia countered, a bit cheekily.

She considered the question for a moment, taking a drink of her butterbeer to steady her thoughts. "Small things, as you say. I know we all worried over our NEWTs, when we were her age." She and Edgar had been Head Students, after all, and Oscar had been a Prefect- surely they could empathize with such tendencies. "But she seems almost... determined to stress herself, rather than willing to accept advice on the matter, if that makes sense?"

He conceded to that with a smirk, and a quick nod. There parents were lucky to have Edgar, as he was likely the only child that did not give them the threat of being scared to death at any given time.

Oscar understood stress well, given he had dedicated himself to his studies to a rather ridiculous degree as a child, not doing certain activities at Hogwarts just to sit about and read books, but it did seem ... different. "So you think so?" He left off the 'too', not wanting to sound as if he were judging Susan.

Oscar was simply concerned, and concern was not a good look for him. "She's certainly taking on too much, I think."

The too was all but implied, but Amelia nodded all the same. "Perhaps it runs in the family. Seventh year was a long time ago, for us, Oscar- but I think we remember it well enough, hm?"

"Yes, I know that I do at least. Can't say if you do, Amelia." It was said as a light tease to his sister, although Oscar had to work not to frown. Neither Amelia nor Susan were at fault, and he should not be placing his worries off onto her. Flashing a quick smile, Oscar waved a hand. "I shouldn't be fussing to you, isn't exactly relaxing talk."

"Who else are you going to fuss to?" A pause, then, "Alright, your wife, I'll give you that." She'd half answered her own question. "I just mean- we're family, Oscar. And if we can't take these sort of things to one another, that's a bit rubbish, I'd say."

Except Oscar was unsure if he would complain like this to his wife, or even Edgar. They were important people in his life, just as Amelia was, but there was somehow a difference. Oscar he never wanted to disappoint, even now, and things did not need to be strained with his wife. Amelia was a little different. "Well, that's just opening you up to listening to my playing at a wanker any time of the day, love."

Amelia's (rather indelicate) snort of laughter was mostly masked by taking a drink, but her grin remained even as she set the glass back down. "Well, maybe not any time of day," she returned. "A girl has to sleep at some point, anyway."

"No sister of mine will rest." Oscar joked, lifting his own glass to take a drink of whiskey, although when he lowered it the man decided to change topics, turning it around to the dark haired witch. "And how has everything been for you? Beyond work."

"Beyond work?" Amelia raised an eyebrow. The pair of them were chronic workaholics, after all. Of course, there actually was news to be shared- if Edgar hadn't already done so- but Amelia hesitated. She hadn't wanted to advertise it, really- just because it was new (even though it wasn't).

She idly traced a pattern in the wood grain of the table with a fingertip, considering what to say. Finally, the simplest was the best: "I've been seeing Brutus again." Seeing didn't necessarily imply the whole truth- that she'd been staying up at the Distillery with him more often than not- but Amelia was fairly certain that Oscar didn't want that many details.

"Beyond work." He repeated, sipping whiskey and watching the other. While Oscar and Amelia both lived more at the office than home, he was sure that there was more that she got up to than he knew, or realized. She was not the boring sort of chronic worker after all, and certainly had an absorbent amount of friends.

Having to deliberately keep himself from choking on liquor, Oscar set the glass back down and auburn brows arched high on his forehead. "What, when did this start?"

Amelia gave him a pointed look. "Eight years ago?" It was a facetious answer, of course- yes, she and Brutus had been dating back then, but they'd been off more than on for most of the time since then.

A pause, then a more proper answer. "December. And he accompanied me to the St Mungo's Ball in January, as well." She was smiling now- a soft, gentle smile that hinted at much more than she was saying aloud.

Oscar only gave her a long stare back, waiting to answer until Amelia gave him a proper response. It was not that he disliked Brutus, but the other was certainly not his little sister, and he would judge any man that came near her.

At least she was smiling though, which kept Oscar from fully voicing his unwarranted concerns. "That sounds as if things are heading up... are you dating proper then?"

"Dating proper?" Amelia echoed the question back to Oscar in turn. She likely could have surmised what he meant by it, of course, but it seemed much more fun to ask him for clarification. "I imagine that means something vastly different now than it did when we were teenagers, Oscar. Please, elaborate."

Oscar wrinkled his nose in distaste and gave a quick shake of his head. "I mean being officially together, not just one off dates occasionally? I take it you are properly a couple, the type that will do something excruciatingly sweet on Valentines?" Because if the man was not committed to Amelia than it would be an issue, as far as Oscar was concerned.

Whether or not Brutus was committed to her had never really been the issue- Amelia had been the one dragging her feet, before. "We have not made Valentine's Day plans as of yet," she offered, "but I expect we will do something, yes."

Which still did not answer his question, but Oscar was willing to give her that. "Oh? You will have to tell me all about that, you realize. I like knowing what's going on in my sister's life." He paused. shifting the glass in hand, although he made no move to drink. "I'm happy you're getting on with him."

Amelia nodded, carefully. "I am... I'm happy, too, Oscar. It's still difficult for me, sometimes. To separate the person I am within the DMLE from just plain Amelia. I've been with the DMLE so long that sometimes I forget- or don't allow myself- to be anything else. But Brutus helps me to remember that part of myself." When I let him.

Which was all that he wanted for her. Work got in the way more often than not, and Oscar had had his own fair share of marital troubles. Likely, waiting, letting time drag on to this degree, would help Amelia in the long run. "And of course, you let him do that gladly, right?" Oscar said, voice a gentle tease as he smirked at his sister.

Rather than respond- because, really, he knew the answer already- Amelia just raised her glass to Oscar and smiled. "Cheers."
