Who:  Grant & Verity Page
What:  SURPRISE TWINS
Where:  Their flat, Diagon Alley
When:  February 1
Rating:  Awkward and confusing and Grant having a mild paternal freak-out.
Status:  Threaded, Complete

Grant and Verity had returned from their honeymoon in Cornwall two days before, and he had spent the time since working on packing up their flat.  Thankfully, magic made this task much easier than it would have been otherwise, but- even though their flat was small, it was still a multi-day process.  The sitting room (which was also the dining room and the kitchen and the entryway...) had boxes stacked along the walls, and all that really remained was their winter clothing and a few essential kitchen items that would have to wait until they actually, well, moved.  (Not long now, mercifully.)

Verity went to both doctors and Healers, at the insistence of her parents and Grant and his da (a Healer, himself), respectively.  Grant usually went to the appointments at St Mungo's- if only to see his da, as noted- but avoided the days with the muggle doctors, since they unnerved him something fierce.  So with Verity off at a doctor's appointment, there was little to be done- after the packing- than put the kettle on for tea and settle in for a bit of reading.  He really did need to brush up on his Portuguese, after all...

Verity, after having been to the doctor, wasn't sure what she should be feeling. Ordinarily, she came banging up the stairs and into the flat like a whirling dervish because why not, but today she sort of trudged in, looking a bit shell shocked.

"I'm home," she said, biting her lip as she looked at her husband. Two days, they'd been home from Cornwall, and now she was about to drop a bomb on him.

"e assim a verdade da questão é que a economia de hoje não pode ser... Verity?" Grant had been half reading aloud- to practice the pronunciation- when Verity entered the flat. Normally he'd have heard her coming long enough to have set his work aside and greet her properly, but this time she just about slunk into the flat unnoticed. He blinked, slowly, and carefully closed the book he'd been reading. Something is definitely wrong.

Standing, he carefully approached her- not insomuch as he thought her fragile, but just wary that she had bad news to share. "Well, you'll have to tell me, sooner or later, so you really ought to just be out with it now," Grant offered, reaching for his wife's hand. "I suppose you could wait for later, if you really felt you needed to, but I'd prefer the sooner, so I don't have to just imagine what on earth could have happened today that's got you looking like someone's just thrown a cat out the window."

"Oh, Grant," she sobbed suddenly, rushing forward and burying her face in his shoulder. She supposed some people might find his rambling irritating, or even obnoxious, but to her, it was just so him and so bloody comforting that even in the midst of all the changes that were about to happen, this one thing was the same.

"What are we going to do?" she wailed, her voice muffled by his shoulder. "I'd only just got my head around the idea of having one, and now there's TWO, and... Owen only built us one crib!"

Grant caught her, his arms wrapped around her- they still could, though it wouldn't be much longer, he supposed- and had just started to gently rub Verity's back when her words finally caught his ears. His hands stopped, but he didn't move, otherwise- in fact, he may well have been frozen on the spot, for a good long breath that was colored only by his wife's sudden crying.

Two? He didn't need to ask two what, of course, though the temptation was certainly there. Really, Verity was one of the only people who could knock him so clearly speechless, and she'd now done it twice over.

Soon enough, Verity would be scolding him to say something, anything, but the words kept half forming and then disappearing entirely before they escaped Grant's lips. Finally, he managed one lonely sentence, "I'm sure Owen can build another."

Even while she was crying, Verity managed a giggle at Grant's reaction. "We're having twins," she clarified unnecessarily. "Bloody good thing we were moving to a bigger place anyway, isn't it?"

She stood back and framed her stomach with her hands, showing it off. "Explains a lot though," she went on. "I'm so big, for twenty weeks. We've always thought so, haven't we? Thought that I'm really big? And the morning sickness was ridiculous. And the kicking! I always thought the baby was just an active little sod but now I know there's two of them..." She laughed. "Little bastards have probably been fighting in there."

Though the answer as to Verity's size may have been a tricky one, Grant nodded once more- still slowly, as the news was still sinking in. He brought a hand to the back of his neck- a nervous gesture- and watched as Verity's hands framed her stomach. Two!

Grant took a step back, sinking back down onto the sofa he'd occupied earlier. As he did, both hands now slid into his hair, raking his fingers through as he looked from Verity, to her stomach, and back again- over and over.

"Bloody hell, we're going to have twins." Even though this point had already been made quite clear. "Two of them! Not two twins, obviously, because if there were two twins then we'd really have problems- I mean, not that this, us, you, we, them, now is a problem, either, I just- twins, Verity? You're sure?"

"Two heartbeats, two heads, two little botties, and two little winkies," Verity confirmed with a shy smile. "And, you know, four arms, four legs, twenty each of fingers and toes. Er, but, just the one placenta, they tell me. So..." She made a face, not sure how he'd react to this next piece of news. "...they're likely... identical?"

Now that Grant knew, and his freaking out seemed to be minimal, she was beginning to feel a lot better about it all. She was supremely grateful that she had him, to have and to hold, but also to hep her through this, because she was damn sure she wouldn't be able to do it alone.

Thankfully (or not, depending on your perspective), the babies kicked and Verity flinched, bending over to peer down at her belly. "Oi you two, be nice! Don't make me come in there!" she called without thinking.

His hands had fallen down into his lap, and it seemed that all he could do was nod to the news as she rattled it off. Sometime later, this would all really sink in, and Grant would figure out a way to deal with his nerves and uncertainties. Showing them all to Verity, here and now, wouldn't help either of them.

"Identical." Just like- Grant closed his eyes, two fingers pressing in at his temple, at the headache that was now threatening to appear. He nodded, again. (Again!) "I just hope they're a bit better behaved than- well, no, I suppose I oughtn't say that, either, else I'll just jinx myself more than I already must have done."

"I suppose that depends on how we raise them," Verity mused. "D'you know, we've not really talked about how we want to raise them. I expect that, given our wildly different upbringings, we've probably got rather different expectations about how it's going to go."

She crossed to their tiny kitchen and rummaged in the cupboard for a moment, coming up with a half loaf of bread and a jar of Marmite. "Fancy a piece of toast?" she asked him. "I could just do with a nice buttery slice of toast and Marmite."

In the middle of her toast-making, the kettle finally went off- Grant settled it with a quick charm, but stood, finally, and made his way over to prepare their tea. (Whether or not she wanted tea didn't seem to need to be asked. This was an occasion for tea.) "I'll trade you toast for tea," he offered. "Though no marmite on mine, thank you." Which, of course, Verity would have known already, but it seemed the sort of thing that ought to be reminded of, just in case.

Grant watched the tea steeping in the cups in front of him and considered Verity's other question. "Honestly, I haven't given it a lot of thought, myself, which I suppose is why I haven't discussed it with you. I realize that I've known, now, for just about six weeks, but those six weeks have been rather busy, what with the holidays and our wedding and then the honeymoon. Not that I'm trying to make excuses, mind, but- to a point- the first bit of having the baby- er, babies- about is all the same, isn't it?"

Verity shrugged - more Marmite for her then - and handed him his toast, taking her cup of tea in return. "Well yes of course," she said. "The babies, well. Babies are babies. I just meant like... traditions, and stuff. Is your mum going to want us to immerse them in Korean culture, for example?"

She wasn't worried about her family insisting on anything other than the babies being staunch Liverpool FC supporters, the way they all were. "And like, discipline, and things. Do you have any... strong feelings? Like, how did we get to five months pregnant without even talking about how we'd like to raise our kids?"

"My mother is not raising our child...ren." The amendment came after a beat. But that line had been drawn in the sand some time ago- when Grant had refused to listen to his mother's protestations about living with Verity in the first place. "But, to that point, I will want to expose them to Korean culture, yes. It's something that means a great deal to me," which Verity knew, of course, "and- not that I'm going to be serving them kimchi at three months- but I would like to see the culture passed on." If they didn't take to it, well, that would be a bridge he would cross at a later time. A much later time.

"Discipline?" Grant blinked over the edge of his teacup. Surely it was too early to be discussing discipline? "Do you foresee them needing discipline any time in the next... oh, eight, nine months?" It was a mostly facetious question, really- not that he meant to brush off her concerns, but still. "To be fair, we didn't even know for the first three months. And after that, well- as I said- holidays, wedding, Cornwall? Remember?"

"I don't know!" Verity said helplessly. "Maybe it's too soon to be talking about discipline, but I can't help but feel like it's better to do it sooner rather than later. Have a game plan going into this, rather than wait until they've started to act up to decide how we want to deal with it..."

She plopped down on the couch beside him, kicking off her shoes and swinging her feet up into his lap. "There's just so much to think about," she said through a mouthful of toast. "And I do remember Cornwall, you saucy git. If I hadn't already been pregnant, I probably would be after Cornwall."

"I am very much a proponent of plans," Grant admitted, "but I also have a feeling that planning out too much in advance will only frustrate us. Or me. Not that I'm frustrated now, really, but- see how quickly our plans have changed, just in the last six hours!"

When she swung her feet into his lap, Grant took the hint easily enough, and started a gentle massage. At her accusation, such that it was, he just shrugged- a look of, Who, me? on his face. "It takes two, Mrs Page."

Verity grinned. After a lifetime of being called "Miss Fox" in varying tones of exasperation, "Mrs Page" seemed like a definite upgrade.

"Maybe we should get a head start on number three," she teased, tilting her head toward the bedroom.
