Entry tags:! log, 1998-january, character: theodore nott, x-character: luna lovegood

WHO: Theodore Nott & Luna Lovegood
WHAT: Luna is wandering the halls, talking to paintings, and runs into Theodore.
WHEN: Thursday night.
WHERE: Hogwarts castle, a random floor & generally abandoned hallway.
WARNINGS: Bullying.
STATUS: Complete.

It was not unusual to find Luna Lovegood roaming the hallways alone. She was not a girl with many friends and her interests were vast, falling into the realm of the absurd that often left her wandering alone in search of (possibly) nonexistent creatures. She was having a awful bout with wrackspurts this day, her brain going all fuzzy. She was lost in thought, wandering quite aimlessly for a while until she came to a bit of hallway she had only been to once or twice before.

She was glad for it, though. There were a lovely set of paintings that were often ignored. "Oh, hello there." Luna said in her characteristically dreamy voice, a serene sort of look on her face. A smile crept into her features and she waved amicably at the portraits of Witches and Wizards she couldn't name. They were happy for the company of course, and it was easy to have a conversation with the paintings who were so frequently without the company of non-painting witches and wizards.

Dropping her things (including her Spectrespecs, a copy of the Quibbler, her bookbag and a sock) she moved amongst the paintings, sharing stories with them of her times in Sweden looking for the Crumpe-Horned Snorcack with her father, and how she was sure they were getting close to a discovery of the elusive creature. She was quite involved in the conversation, unaware of anyone coming or going behind her.

Loony Lovegood. What luck, Theodore thought when he happened upon her. She was definitely the strangest girl ever, and, frankly, it exhausted him. She was a waste of space, just like muggles and mudbloods, though in a different way. What pleasure he would take in messing with her today.

The first thing he did was pick up her bag and dump it all out loudly. Then he snatched up her sneakoscope. "Lot of good this is doing for you, eh Loony?" he called out.

Luna heard a crash behind her and jumped around, letting out a small Oh! of surprise. She saw her bag overturned into the floor, her books and quills all spread out, her Spectrespecs likely broken. And her sneakoscope in the hands of a 7th year boy she had seen before but didn't really know very well. Which wasn't a surprise, Luna didn't know many people very people.

"Are you being attacked by Nargles?" She asked, quite seriously. It was the only reason Luna could find for someone to be so blatantly unkind. Of course, a lot of people were unkind to Luna. "I'm sure the Sneakoscope would have done quite well had I been looking at it." Of course, Luna also had no idea who her enemies were, and likely would have paid it no mind anyway. "Can I have that back please?"

"What the fuck's a nargle?" he said immediately, looking at her as though she were insane, which she probably was. He had no idea how she managed to survive day-to-day. He swiveled the Sneakoscope around in his hand, shifting it from one hand to the other. "Oh I think I'll hold on to it for a while longer."

"A Nargles is a little creature that attacks your brain. I thought that might be why you tripped over my bag." Clearly, Luna did not think he had dumped it out on purpose. Luna blamed all the misdeeds of her missing things on Nargles instead of other people, despite the overwhelming evidence that not all people were nice. Which is why she was often called Loony, much to her dislike. "If you want to borrow it, you could ask." Not that she wanted to let him have it. "But my things go missing a lot and I do rather like that, so I would be really grateful to get it back before term is over."

"Nargles don't exist," he said automatically, because seriously, he'd been through enough years of Care of Magical Creatures to know that. He didn't believe in made-up creatures. "Why would I need to borrow it? It doesn't work." As if to prove a point, he pointed his wand at it and snapped it in half.

"Just because you haven't heard of them doesn't mean they don't exist. The sheer amount of literature on them - " She stopped, because he was holding his wand to her Sneakoscope. One of the things her mother had given her before she died. And then he broke it. Of course it hadn't worked properly to begin with, her mother had done all sorts of spellwork on it to detect other things, which is why it never seemed to do anything. When it broke, Luna frowned. "My mum gave me that." Dismayed, she wondered if it could be fixed.

He arched an eyebrow. "Oops?" he said with the perfect amount of sheepishness. He dropped it onto her bag along with everything else he had dumped out of it. He'd lost his mother too, and if it had been anyone else besides Loony Lovegood, he might have felt a twinge of regret, but as it were, he didn't. He kicked one of her books off to the side. "Keep on talking to the portraits, Loony," he said, "maybe one day you'll join them."

She wasn't really sure if that was sincere or not. His face certainly read sheepish, but given his blatant action she wasn't all too convinced. And then he dropped it in her stuff and kicked her books. She had half a mind to grab her wand, but Luna didn't often hex people. "My name is Luna. Like Lou and na." She enunciated, as if he had pronounced her name incorrectly on accident.

Theodore shrugged with one shoulder. "If you say so. Cheers, Loony," he said with a smirk. He toed the edge of the sneakoscope, thinking about crushing it but for some reason decided against it. Instead, he pointed at the pile of stuff on the floor and cast a (rather weak) sticking charm to them.

Then he walked off.

The charm might have been weak, but that didn't mean she could get any of her things off the floor. Permanent Sticking Charms were permanent, and if his was weak it was almost semi-permanent, but she had no idea how to remove it or when her things would become unstuck from the floor.

She watched as he walked off, raising her wand half-heartedly at him before changing her mind. The paintings all stared, looking upset.
