Entry tags:! log, 1998-january, character: hermione granger, character: terry boot

WHO: Hermione Granger and Terry Boot
WHAT: Terry is trying to reassure Hermione while avoiding being hit by her bookbag.
WHEN: 5pm, Thursday the 22nd of January.
WHERE: Ravenclaw common room.

Terry liked to think of himself as a nice guy. He was competitive, sure, but that didn't make him a complete douchebag. Despite how much he wanted to be the best, he knew Hermione was more brilliant than he was. But he also knew that she worried a bit too much about schoolwork when she didn't need to, and he wanted to make sure she felt confident in herself. It was something she lacked, despite the sort of confident front she sometimes put out. When they met that first day on the train, he had liked her instantly and wanted, in essence, to protect her. He cared about Hermione a lot.

So when she felt like she was missing something, Terry wanted to help her. He knew she hadn't, and she was worrying herself for no reason so he figured it would be a breeze and they would probably just end up talking and relaxing anyway. Something he felt was integral to doing well, and something he thought she probably needed a bit of. She was at the library (of course) so he used the ten minutes he had before she was going to show up to clear out a table for them in the common room and have some tea and pastries brought up. Biscuits and the like, even though dinner was just a bit off.

Once everything was all set up, Terry sat down in one of the chairs and propped open a book. It had nothing to do with any of their classes, it was a muggle book on science that his mum had sent him. He still really enjoyed muggle things, despite how often magical things contradicted it. But it was fun to read, and Terry liked to expand his knowledge and know a bit about everything. With his feet propped up on the chair beside him, he sipped a bit of tea as he read, checking his watch briefly with anticipation for Hermione to show up.

After putting the last book in its proper place on the shelf, Hermione collected her things and left the library. She had been spending a lot of time in the library when she wasn’t in class or doing her duties as Head Girl. Yes, she was worried about the exams at the end of the school year even if she had months left to study. It was her fifth year all over again but worse.

The other part was that she was looking for some type of escape from what was going on beyond the castle walls. It terrified her more than she was letting on. Her closest friends would have known but she was doing a pretty good job of trying to keep a good front about it all. As she walked back to the to the common room, her thoughts turned to the recent murder of Dirk Cresswell, who was supporting Muggbleborn rights. Her right and others like her rights. She had already informed of her parents of what was going on but they weren’t going anywhere soon. She couldn’t help but worry for them all the same.

She answered the riddle and the way into the Ravenclaw common room was revealed. Stepping through she looked to see Terry had already set up and walked over to him. She took the book in her hand and hit him gentle on the arm. “That is for earlier.” Her eyes traveled to the table, “All this for comparing notes?” Shaking off her heavy bag unto the floor before taking a seat. “What are you reading?”

He peeked up over the book as she approached, giving her a wide smile. Up until she hit him with her book though. "Aw, come on!" He said, laughing a little as he batted the book away. It didn't hurt, of course, she had barely touched him but he played along anyway. "I've got Quidditch points to win us, now, don't hurt me." He grinned, knowing full well that she would never actually hurt him. But he felt like teasing and playing around with her a little might ease her nerves. He could see the tension on her face.

"Yes, all this for going over notes. C'mon, have you even been eating properly since the holidays?" He asked, brow raising at her. Terry had seen all too many of his friends skip meals in order to study harder, to get in those extra hours for homework. This year was tough, but he wanted to make sure all his loved ones were as healthy and happy as they possibly could be. While there wasn't much he could do to ease the fears of his friends and classmates about all that was going on outside of Hogwarts, he could try and help their N.E.W.T fears.

"This? Oh, it's a book about muggle science. Mostly physics." He said, showing her the cover before he marked his page and closed him. "My mum sent it with a jacket I forgot at home over the break." He loved his mother quite dearly, and had always valued the half-muggle upbringing he had, even if that were a dangerous thing to be proud of these days. "So come on and sit, have some tea, eat a biscuit, and let's see if we can ease some of that test anxiety we have."

A smirk crossed her lips at the mention of Quidditch. “You’ll survive.” Unlike some of her friends who were on their house team, Hermione liked to keep both feet on the ground. Not after what happened in her first year when she fell from her broom during flying class. She pushed those thoughts towards the back of her mind and focused on her friend in front of her.

“Of course I have eaten.” And by “eating”, she meant shoving everything into her mouth as humanly possible in order to get back to the library. It might not be the healthiest way to eat but at least she got something into her system. And if she could she would bring her dinner to the library, but sadly food was not allowed.

“That was nice of her mum.” She smiled. Hermione loved it when other showed an interest in Muggle thing, even if their parent was muggle themselves. She took a seat and took out a large pile of notes that were neatly arranged in a folder, labeled and colour coded. “These are just from this term. If you want the rest I would have to get them from my room.” Placing the pile in between them before reaching to pour her a cup of tea. She had to admit, a cup of tea did calm her nerves. “I am surprised not more people are not worried about the exams.”

"Nah, I think you may have done permanent damage." He joked, pulling his feet off the chair beside him and sitting up more properly. He knew she wasn't a fan of flying, but she was still supporting of the Quidditch team and that's what mattered to him, anyway. Even if she hated it, though, Terry would still be friends with her. He enjoyed her company quite a lot.

He didn't disbelief her, he knew he had seen her eat but it seemed either she wasn't eating enough, or she was wolfing down food so quickly he was surprised she hadn't choked on it yet. "I'm just checking. A lot of people get so caught up in studying they forget." He pointed out, clearly just trying to be helpful and not patronizing. He had skipped a meal or two in his own defense, particularly from nerves on actual test days or on a particularly stressful Quidditch day.

"You'd love my mum, I bet. She's brilliant." He said, grinning proudly. He adored his mother, and it never mattered to him in the slightest that she wasn't a witch. Terry thought she was just the coolest. Almost as awesome as his father, whom he sort of idolized. When Hermione set all her notes down, he rose a brow. That was a lot of notes. "Just this term will be fine. Is there any particular class you think you missed something in, or is it just sort of everything?"

He went ahead, separating the stacks so that he could get a look at everything. Tea was taken up, separating out classes he wasn't taking - namely, Arithmancy, Astronomy and History of Magic, and set those ones aside. "I think a lot of people are worried, they just aren't so vocal. I've seen people taking Calming Draughts from Bones. I think a lot of people are also distracted by what's been going on."

“I could always hit it again and maybe it would be alright.” She said in a serious tone of voice but a moment later she had a smile on her lips. Terry was her best friend and knew he would be worried about her, especially if she was taking her studying so far. “I can’t forget the hunger pains. Besides my parents would go mental if they found out I was skipping meals.” She hoped she continued to get those letters every day.

“All of them. Especially Ancient Runes as a lot of the runes are similar.” Hermione watched as he separated her notes, she did have a knack for outdoing herself. However, this was nothing compared to her third year. She was pretty sure she would have already had a nerve breakdown if she were still taking that many classes.

“I haven’t lost my nerves yet.” Though there have been times it may have seemed like it. She looked down at his last sentence as if she was very interested on something on her nails. “Well – yes. Or they could be trying to distract themselves from what is going on. Which brings me to a favor. Are you going to Hogsmeade next weekend?”

"That might work." He agreed jokingly, grinning at her. Terry was quite close with Hermione - he had been from day one. Despite his more popularized friendship with Michael and Anthony, he always considered Hermione to be one of his closest and dearest friends. "Good, neither can I." Unless he was overly nauseated from nerves, which happened on rare occasion.

"All of them, alright then." Terry was quite confident that he would do well on his NEWTS. It wasn't like he was cocky, he was actually quite modest when he wasn't talking smack. But he had studied hard, and part of doing well was knowing that you could do it. Terry had all the confidence in the world that he would get A's or better on each NEWT, and probably E's. He reckoned in at least Potions and DADA he would get O's.

"I know you haven't." He said, smiling at her. He did know, however, that she must be worried at least as much as everyone else about what happened to Dirk Cresswell, if not moreso. Hermione didn't let everyone know what she was really feeling, but Terry didn't need her to show it. He just knew. "A favor? Anything, Hermione. I did plan on going. What do you need?"

"I'll make sure to do it before your next game. I want us to win you know." She took a sip of her tea and picked up a small cookie and started to nibble on it. "I know I shouldn't worry as much as I am but - you never know. OWLS were nothing compared to NEWTS." If she wanted to get into the Magical Law Enforcement in the Ministry than she would need all the grades she could get. She didn't have magical parentage to help her in that department, she could only rely on her smarts.

"Well. It isn't anything big. Mandy and I were wonder if you, Anthony, Mikey and Mo want to go with us to Hogsmeade. I think there has been some planning on her part as well but well - we figure if we travel in a pack it would be better than just one or two." She tried not to make it like she was actually frighten on going to Hogsmeade. Nothing would go wrong - right? There would be steps taken to ensure the students safety.

"That is because you are a good person." Terry laughed. Obviously she was a good person for many other reasons aside from Quidditch, but her appreciation for the game and winning definitely made her like, a Saint, in his eyes. He just absolutely couldn't understand the girls who didn't like Quidditch at all, even for the fun of team spirit and rivalry and whatnot. "I don't know, I think there was more pressure on OWLS. We were suddenly just kind of thrown into deciding what career path we wanted, and we could only continue on with that if we achieved the right OWLS. Now, it's like, we've gotten to refine our focus. No stupid Divination exam or anything because I have to take it." He was still taking a lot of classes, but it helped being able to pick and choose. Made him like his classes more.

Of course, he was still going over her notes (which were way more through than his) and sipping his tea when she asked about the Hogsmeade trip and going on a pack. He understood why she would feel tense - and to be quite honest Terry was feeling the anxiety over going out too, but he was sure Hogsmeade would be safe, right? "What, you mean, you want Michael, Anthony, and I to be seen with two wonderful, beautiful ladies in Hogsmeade? I don't know if I can do that." He said, smirking. "Really, though. Of course we can all go together. The three of us always roam in a pack anyway, you can join in."

"Thanks." She grinned happily at him. It made her feel good when someone said that was a good person. Often times she felt that her know-it-all ways drove people away. "But NEWTS, you need them to get into your job that we worked for two years to get into. It would be devastating if all this work and I don't get a chance." And there it was - what she was afraid of most.

She gave him a look when he said beautiful ladies. "Don't think you can? I know that you have your all boys club, but asking nicely? Don't make me do this the hard way." She said back. "Good. I really think we should try and stay together as much as possible. I believe that we need to rely on each other more than ever. So what do you think?" From the looks of it, he barely dented her notes - which she could easily make a book from the sheer amount of them. "I know I am missing a day or two."

Hermione had always been like that. Her focus on her work wasn't just because she wanted to do well - it's because she was afraid of what would happen if she didn't. Terry understood that. Most of his actions were driven by the need to impress his father. Just because he knew that, didn't mean he could change it. So when she uttered that fear, of not getting the chance to do what she had worked so hard for, her stopped reading the notes and touched her shoulder with his hand softly. "Hermione, if you don't get your dream job the second you graduate, you can always work your way towards it." He dropped his hand, smiling at her. "Look at my dad. Great NEWTS, not the best, but good. He started as some paper shuffler at the Misuse of Muggle Artifacts office. Then he worked his way up. It's not all NEWTS. And you, more than anyone else I know, would be capable of working their way to the top." He hoped, at the very least, that was mildly reassuring.

He went back to her notes, though he was by no means ignoring her. Terry grinned at her when she made the face about his beautiful comment, and laughed at her threat. "I think it's best if we all stick together, too. I'm sure Hogsmeade is safe, or they wouldn't let us go. But I think it'd be a lot better if we all just went around together. Five of the arguably most intelligent and impressive students on campus roaming together? Who would dare?" A crazed muggle-killer, that's who, but he wasn't going to say that. "Missing a day or two? Hermione, you've never missed a class in your life." He teased, carefully reading through her notes. "From what I've seen in your Ancient Runes notes, I'm not seeing anything missed. You've got more in here than what they even teach us."

She started to fidget with her fingers and looked up at him. Opening her mouth to say something but ended up just staying silent. She knew she had to start from the bottom, her dream job would be Head of the Department and knew that was a stretch. It was a scary thought about entering the real world as a full qualified witch and being a Muggleborn. There were people still out there that couldn't look past her background. She was hoping to change that. "I know." She finally said hoping that was a good enough answer. It didn't feel like it to her.

"Cocky much?" She replied to his intelligent and impressive part. Pushing away her tea as she leaned over to see her own notes. "Well, I did some extra reading on Ancient Runes from a suggested list. They seemed important enough to remember. They might appear on the exams - you know, as a way of testing us." Hermione never felt guilty about reading about more magic. Once she found out she was truly a witch she wanted nothing more than to learn everything she could and would strive for nothing less than perfection. Then again, it was something she had been doing since she was a little girl and books were at those times, her only friend.

"Which reminds me, I still have to finish that translations homework." She reached into her bag and pulled out her homework planner.

He knew it wasn't what everyone wanted to hear, having to work for it. Hermione understood that, but Terry knew that if she didn't get the right position to start her way to the top from, she would view that as a failure. There was no doubt in his mind, however, that she would get a position in the Ministry. "If you need any you know, people to recommend you for a job, in the Ministry if that's what you're after, my dad could." Terry spoke about his friends endlessly to his family, and on multiple occasions he had spoken about Hermione to his father, often relaying how intelligence he thought she was. And Terry had no problems having his dad recommend Hermione, particularly because he had no interest in working for the Ministry.

"I'm just confident in your abilities, Hermione. You, Mandy, Michael, Anthony, you're all incredibly capable and smart. I'm just lucky enough to have weasled my way into your circle and gleam the benefits from having very smart friends." He smiled. It wasn't even a ploy or rouse - despite how much trash he talked when it came to Quidditch, Terry was actually a very modest boy. He didn't like to boast on normal occasion, aside from with Zoe which he happened to have a very antagonistic friendship with. "I know, I recognize this bit of notes from one of the books you let me borrow." He replied, finger pointing at a bit they certainly had not learned in class.

"Ancient Runes looks pristine, I'm sure you haven't missed anything here. And if your notes are even half this detailed in your other classes, you'll be fine." He slid that stack of notes over to the pile he'd set the class notes he wasn't in on, and started in on the Transfiguration notes. "I have to do that, too. I got a bit overenthusiastic on my Potions essay and almost forgot about it." He said, laughing. "But I'll give all your notes a look first."

“That would be very kind of you.” A recommendation couldn’t hurt in the long run. If she could last that long – the exams might be the end of her (if the fact that someone wasn’t trying to end her life happens first). Rubbing her brow and lean back in her chair as if in deep thought. “I wish I had your confidence. I know I hear it all the time but it isn’t unheard of people being the hardest on themselves. Strange the sorting hat almost put me in Gryffindor. I wonder how that would had gone.” She was fairly certain her life would have been very different indeed.

Looking over to where his finger was pointing, “Oh yes. I thought that was a good thing to know.” Adding a nod with it. She felt loads better now that her notes were well in order. “I finished the potions essay ages ago. I have also taken a reading into spotting poisons in drinks. Finding them in food it a little more trickier but not unheard of.” She wasn’t going to let history repeat itself. “I wonder if the Professor would have any good recommendations on books…” She started to think as Crookshanks jumped into her lap as she flipped through her homework planner. “I am running so low on herbs. I should had stopped by Diagon Alley before I returned from the Holiday but I didn’t have time.”

"We're all hard on ourselves. You think just because I talk about being confident that I always am?" He said, nudging her a little. He was trying to give her a bit of a pep talk, so he didn't want it to be too overly serious. She should feel better after it, shouldn't it? Terry wanted her to feel better, anyway. "I mean, I don't think I would ever be a slacker anyway but I'm always second-guessing myself. Like, would this make my dad proud? before I do anything." He clammed up a little. He didn't usually share his feelings about his dad with anyone.

Terry would have finished his Potions essay with ease, had he not gotten carried away with his rather inventive side when it came to potions. He had a passion for it that was unrivaled by any other class or even Quidditch. "I highly doubt they're going to try and poison us via food or drink in the NEWTS, but it is handy to know. I have a book somewhere on that topic, if you'd want to borrow it." She probably already read it, but he had some pretty obscure books on Potions, given his deep love of Potion making. "We can pick some up when we go to Hogsmeade. I'm a little low on some of mine, too." Understatement, since he used so many of his ingredients to invent potions. Not that any were worth anything, not yet. But one day, he'd invent a really good one.
