Who: Gwen Montgomery and Narcissa Malfoy
What: Gwen pops in for a visit
Where: Malfoy Manor
When: Saturday afternoon
Rating: G? PG?
Status: Open

Gwendolyn had probably spent more time in at Malfoy Manor since Pansy had moved in than she probably had in the last few years. It wasn't all that surprising really, the girls tended to spend a lot of time over at each other's place and given that Gwen's hope had far more people, and an annoyingly intrusive little brother, made Pansy's place generally the better option. Of course, the fact that things had shifted between them in the last few months certainly helped.

That afternoon, after a rather lazy morning in bed, Gwendolyn decided she needed to see Pansy. They'd had lunch earlier in the week but it was hardly unusual for her to stop by unannounced, especially when there was so much going on. There was Draco's party in the evening and although she was excited for that, at the moment she was far more interested in seeing her friend. Apparating to the usual location for Malfoy Manor, Gwendolyn smoothed down her dress, pulled a mirror out f her bag for a quick check before making her way to the front door.

The wards alerted Narcissa to Gwendolyn's presence as soon as she arrived outside the gate. Given that she was Pansy's best friend, the gate had been instructed to let her inside if the Malfoys were home, so she was able to pass through the gate and proceed along the walkway and to the front door unimpeded.

As Gwendolyn walked up, Narcissa decided it was time she got to know the young Miss Montgomery, especially given that she was Pansy's best friend--and William's sister. She was also on the very short list of people being considered by the Malfoy's friends, and Narcissa was the person who could most easily have a conversation with her. Hallam, of course, would get to know her during her internship, but the fact that he was her boss would make it difficult for him to truly get to know her.

Narcissa had Dobby greet Gwendolyn at the door. The house elf escorted her to the formal parlour, where Narcissa was sitting, sipping on an aperitif.

"Gwendolyn," she said as Dobby showed her in. "I hope you don't mind I asked Dobby to bring you here first. I thought, since you've been coming over so often we should get to know each other."

Gwendolyn was less surprised to be greeted by Dobby and far more surprised to find that she was being led into the parlour. Although she had seen a portion of the Malfoy Manor, Gwen generally spent most of her time in Pansy's room or outside in the gardens. So when Gwendolyn was taken in to the parlour she did her best to hide the surprise, especially as she realised that it was Narcissa Malfoy who was waiting for her.

Allowing her to speak first, Gwendolyn bowed her head slightly and shook her head at the comment. "Of course not, Mrs. Malfoy. It's a pleasure to see you, you look quite well."

Narcissa smiled warmly at Gwendolyn's response. "Thank you, dear." It seemed the girl knew how to be polite, at least, which was a good sign. Not that Narcissa expected anything less if someone Pansy choose to associate herself so closely with, but it was always prudent to be certain.

"Have a seat." Narcissa gestured to a nearby chair. "Can I get Dobby to fetch a drink for you?"

Gwendolyn smiled politely and waited patiently for Narcissa to allow her to enter further into the room before doing so. Making sure to walk as gracefully as possible, she headed toward the chair, smoothed her skirt and sat down, making sure to sit with her ankles neatly tucked beneath her and her hands placed comfortably in her lap. If there was anything that Gwendolyn knew well to do by now t was how to behave around adults especially those within polite society.

At the question, Gwendolyn nodded. "Yes, please, a glass of water, if you would be so kind."

Narcissa wasn't surprised Gwendolyn only asked for water, though it would have been interesting--and telling--if she asked for something stronger. She sent Dobby to fetch it and then curled up in her seat, kicking off her shoes and pulling her knees up so she was sitting on her feet. She wanted it to be clear to Gwendolyn that this wasn't a formal meeting. That wouldn't give her what she was after. She wanted to find out what kind of person Gwendolyn was, not whether she knew how to behave in polite society.

"Did you enjoy your holiday? Pansy was delighted to get away, but she didn't mention much about what the two of you did." Dobby came in then, bearing Gwendolyn's water. Narcissa dismissed him after he'd given it to her and took another sip of her drink.

A little surprised as Narcissa moved to make herself comfortable. She found herself relaxing just a little in spite of herself. Gwen supposed she'd still on her very best behaviour but being entirely stiff wouldn't do either.

"I did, yes." Gwendolyn said with a smile as she thought back to their holiday. It had been glorious, sleeping with Pansy every night, just enjoying her general presence. The sun, the sea and the water had been brilliant as well, but certainly a distant second. "We did the usual, enjoyed the sun a bit of shopping, it was all in all a very relaxing holiday."

"Good. I'm sure you both deserved it after NEWTs. I trust you did well on yours?" Narcissa smiled as Gwendolyn relaxed some. She was pleased that Gwendolyn had picked up on the signals and at least stopped being quite so formal.

"What have you been doing now that you're back?" She had heard of Gwendolyn's internship at Twilfitt and Tattings, of course, but she was interested to hear what Gwen had to say about it.

"I like to think so. We did work quite hard for our marks." Gwendolyn said with a small smile as she picked up her glass for that first sip. After a moment, once she'd swallowed she added. "I did a bit better than expected. Not as well as Pansy, of course, but that wasn't at all surprising."

At the following question, Gwen smiled. "I've been lucky enough to have attained an internship at Twilfit and Tatttings, it's been fascinating thus far and I have to say that I am rather enjoying it. Though I suppose that's not at all surprising given that it's a fashion house." Gwen added with a light laugh.

"Fashion can be fun," Narcissa agreed with a laugh of her own. "Though I imagine it's more work than most people would think. There has to be more to it than just trying on robes all the time."She knew there was, of course, from the Malfoys association with the Selwyns, but she wanted to let Gwen talk.

"It must be very exciting to see the new lines ahead of time, though. It's always a thrill when Hallam shows me something he's designed. And you get to see all of it, not just the things he has in mind for you." Not that the things Hallam designed for Narcissa were ever released as part of a line, of course.

"Is that just for the summer? I thought Pansy said something about you going back to school in the fall?" It was an interesting decision, particularly given the ambitions of Gwendolyn's older brother, for her to continue studying, so Narcissa was especially interested in the reasoning behind it.

"Oh it absolutely is." Gwendolyn agreed smiling. "I think that's why I'm enjoying it so much, I mean I haven't really been allowed to get too involved in the design process, but it is nevertheless interesting to see. There's so much involved, and it's not just in the design process but the creative process and the understanding of style, the market and having to predict just what might be the next big thing for people to aspire to wear."

At the mention of Hallam, Gwendolyn nodded and smiled. "I haven't seen everything, and of course I can't say anything, but I'm sure you'll be very pleased with the upcoming pieces."

"It is just for the summer." Gwen said with a nod, though now that she was actually involved in fashion, albeit in a very minor capacity, it was going to be difficult to leave. "I've always been fascinated with the stage, and I am certainly looking forward to WADA. I hope to take some design classes there as well, in general the aim is to complete a two year course in acting but I can see both experiencing complementing one another, even if they don't entirely appear to do so." Part of her also hoped that she might be able to continue, if only in a minor capacity at Twilfit, but it was hardly her decision to make.

"What do you think you'll do after you're done at WADA? Do you plan to act? Work in the theater in another capacity? Use those skills elsewhere?" Some of those options were more acceptable than others, of course. Gwendolyn's options depended entirely on how successful her brother was with Cambina Bulstrode.

Narcissa would have to ask Gwendolyn's opinion on that next, though for the moment she wanted to know what the girl thought she'd be doing with her life.

"I do intend to act. At least for a few years. I want to build a good, strong career on the stage, the WWN as well, utilise my skills and make a name for myself." Gwendolyn explained, pausing for just a moment to take a sip from her glass. "I'm sure I'll eventually develop my brand from there, branch out into other aspects for the industry, certainly delve into design as well, the training at WADA will be incredibly helpful in a broad range of topics and without a doubt I'll learn well how to market myself and my future."

"Well, that should be exciting, and it sounds like you have a good plan. That's commendable." It wasn't a path that most pureblood daughters would be encouraged to take, but if Gwendolyn had strong business sense, she could help her brother rebuild the depleted Rosier fortune. It wouldn't be old money, of course, but they would have an old name to go with their new money, and that would count for something, if William managed to do his part.

And speaking of William, it was time to find out what Gwendolyn thought of her brother's plans. "Tell me, Gwendolyn, has your brother confided in you about his plans for the future? I'm curious what your opinion is on the matter."

"Thank you, I did think it was best to have a full picture in my head before making any further decision." Gwendolyn explained. Of course, it didn't mean that she wasn't going to do the traditional pureblooded route, she was well aware that there would be a husband and children in her future, and she was already making plans in that direction, but it was still a few years off.

When Narcissa asked her about her brother, Gwendolyn groaned inwardly but managed to not betray her disappointment. "He has indeed." She said, managing a perfectly real looking smile. "I've been advised of the very good news regarding his marriage to a lovely halfblooded lady. I can't say that I've had the pleasure to meet her, but I a certain that they'll be well matched. I do believe we have you to thank for the match?"

"It was Crispin Bulstrode's idea," Narcissa said dismissively. "I simply facilitated things. Cambina had asked me to find her a husband, her father suggested your brother, and they were both amenable." Though, Narcissa wasn't certain if Cambina still was. She wasn't going to bring that up to Gwendolyn, though. Pansy could choose to tell her friend about the Bulstrodes anger at her changed circumstances if she wished.

"I realize it isn't a traditional match--Cambina's bloodline does leave something to be desired, though her father's heritage is impeccable--but your brother thinks the benefits of the match outweigh that disadvantage. Do you agree?" Narcissa smiled encouragingly. "Be honest, dear. I promise I won't be upset whatever your answer is."

"I see." Gwendolyn said with a nod as Narcissa explained herself. She still couldn't grasp why her brother thought that this was a good idea. She help her tongue nonetheless, because it wasn't for her to say what she thought. Then the next question was posed and she was at an utter loss.

How did one precisely say that it was probably the dumbest plan in the history of stupid plans? No, she couldn't be entirely honest, because as much as she wanted to tell Narcissa that it was obvious to her that she was planning on destroying the Rosier lineage and that this only proved that there seemed to be no thought spared for their standing among the purest families, she was still Mrs. Malfoy and like it or not Gwen wasn't going to offend the Malfoys.

"Yes, Mr. Bulstrtode lineage might be impeccable, but I'm afraid the match isn't with Cambina's father." Gwendolyn said politely, brushing a few strands of hair out of her eyes. "Whilst I cannot say that I appreciate the idea of the Rosier line no longer being pureblood, and I do fear that this would see the end of another long-standing and impeccable bloodline, I am certain that all parties involved are doing what they feel is best for the future. I'm sure the benefits will prove innumerable." Gwendolyn added with another smile, managing quite well to keep her irritation out of her tone and features. Oh yes, she was sure that the benefits, of which there were precisely none, would certainly be great.

Well, the girl's priorities were certainly in the right place. "Cambina Bulstrode is...a means to an end," Narcissa said delicately. "William's union with her--if successful--will prove advantageous to a great number of people, all of whom will be quite generous with their gratitude." Narcissa would leave it to William if he wanted to reveal the precise business details of his match with Cambina, but the Malfoys would be supplying a significant amount of money--significant to the Rosiers anyway--for the down payment on Rosier Manor when William was ready to buy it back. Others would contribute as well if William were successful in advancing the Cause.

"Once that end has been met, however...." Here Narcissa's smile turned slightly predatory. "Unfortunate things sometimes happen, especially to people with dangerous jobs like Miss Bulstrode's. If something were to prevent her from providing your brother with an heir, I am certain there would be any number of pureblood young ladies willing to step into her place."

Listening politely, Gwendolyn took another sip from her glass as she waited for Narcissa to explain herself. She did her best not to react despite her rather surprise at the comment. Although part of her, a very large part, wanted nothing more than to believe her and to think that maybe that was the plan all along, surely Will would have told her, wouldn't he? It would have saved all of their arguing.

"Yes." Gwendolyn said slowly, nodding solemnly. It would indeed solve their problem, though she still feared William mightn't see it that way. "Such an occurrence would indeed be rather unfortunate." Gwendolyn added, smiling in a way that one might have easily thought she'd said delightful.

Good. She had caught Narcissa's meaning without her needing to explain. That boded well for her success in society, and moreover her glee boded well for her success in the right sort of society. None of the Death Eaters really had a read on Gwendolyn, but if they were to truly bring in the younger generation beyond William and Pansy, she was someone to be considered.

"I am certain that, as his devoted sister, you would be there to help William with whatever he needs should things reach that point." Cosmo believed that William wouldn't be tied with something as inconvenient as falling in love with Miss Bulstrode. Narcissa agreed, but she also knew the heart was unpredictable. She and Lucius hadn't planned to fall in love, after all. If the same thing happened to William and Cambina's goals hadn't been brought into alignment with his, someone else would have to take steps.

Narcissa softened her smile a little. "I know it is a difficult situation, but I hope you'll support your brother through it."

"Oh yes, of course." Gwendolyn responded not missing a beat and nodding solemnly. She did rather hope that this was Wills end plan because after the no9nsense he'd been spouting about making her children heirs she had started to worry considerably. She shook her head and ran her fingers up to brush a few stands of hair out of her eyes.

"I indeed intend to aid him in whatever way possible." It wouldn't do at all for her or Izzie's children to inherit as proper Rosiers.

"I'm very glad to hear that, Gwendolyn." Narcissa set her glass aside and straightened in her seat. "Thank you for taking the time to talk to me. I'll let you get to Pansy now, unless there's anything I could do for you?"
