Entry tags:! log, 1998-june, character: fay dunbar, x-character: eddie carmichael

Who:Fay Dunbar & Eddie Carmichael
What: A night on the town, etc.
When: Tuesday evening, 23 June.
Where: The Leaky Cauldron, and then, who knows.
Warnings: Likely none.

Shoulders slouched against the brick front of the Muggle establishment next to the Leaky and one booted foot kicked back against that same wall, Eddie gave every appearance of waiting for someone. He looked up and down the street every few minutes, fiddling unnecessarily with the cigarette he'd lit, an ear cocked to catch the snippets of conversation that escaped through the pub's door when it opened. Two months ago and he might've waited inside, but after a few less-than-civil encounters within, Tom had started giving him a look he'd previously only seen on his mother's face: disappointment of the kind that meant she might withhold pocket money... or she might call the police and let him spend the night in gaol for a lark.

So he waited outside. And if he knew Fay, she'd keep him waiting.

As per usual, Fay was fashionably late. But she made up for it by walking up in a rather nice outfit and looking just a tad bit hotter than hot. After getting her heart broken, she had gone into wallowing and hardly got through her OWLS, she was not sure she had achieved the ones she needed to even do what she wanted to anymore. But she was trying not to let it get to her now, so she had taken extra care to actually look nice, to try and make herself feel a little better. So the extra wait was probably worth it, for Eddie at least.

"Hey there. Did I keep you waiting long?" She asked, the smirk on her lips showing she obviously didn't care that she had made him wait - at least, unless he was actually upset. Then she might have cared, a little. "Where to then, Ed? You're taking me out on the town to all the best pubs in London right? I hope you know what you're talking about."

Eddie noted with pleasure the special attentions Fay had paid to her appearance, his smile appreciative, knowing.

"All the best pubs? Fancy crawling home, then, do you?"

"Crawling home? Who ever said I would be going home?" She asked, brow raised to the high heavens. "I thought you were here to show me a good time?"

Fay was always a flirt, even if there wasn't as much sass behind it as there used to be. She had gotten her heart broken, and her usual 'fuck it, whatever' nature was replaced by one with a little more false bravado than it had been before.

"C'mon, let's get this night started."

Bemused, Eddie merely shook his head, throwing an arm out to gesture her in the direction of the place he had in mind. It wasn't close, but he wasn't above tugging her into an alley for bit of Side-Along, if it became necessary. Or a bit of something else, if she continued being unapologetically coy. Their flirtations hadn't amounted to much in the past, but he enjoyed Fay's bold humor. And her arse in her Quidditch uniform.

"If you're out of a Tuesday evening you either haven't gotten a job yet, or one you prize about as much as I do mine," he teased. It wasn't entirely true: there were things Eddie rather liked about his work at the Ministry, but it wouldn't do to seem as interested in the workings of a clock radio as Arthur Weasley with a beautiful girl at his side.

It was a good thing that Fay knew how to walk in heels rather well. Not that there had been much occasion for it at Hogwarts, but she was the kind of girl that just sort of naturally knew how to walk well in heels without her feet hurting immediately or looking like a dinosaur as she did so. She side eyed Eddie with a smirk on her lips and looped her arm through his as they made their way down the street.

"I do not have a job yet, no. I applied to be an Auror, though I'm not sure I made my NEWTS. If not, I am going to re-apply as a hitwitch, which I know I have the NEWTS for. And before that I'm going on holiday with Kiki. You remember her, don't you?" It was just the year prior that Eddie had graduated, how could he had forgotten the two? Kiki and Fay had ran around that school together for six of the seven years Eddie had been there, causing ruckuses and being generally awesome.

"Besides, I liked the idea of being able to just go out on Tuesday, and not have to wait for the weekend."

"A holiday with Kiki? There's fodder for my imagination," Eddie laughed. "I'm just going to assume you're packing sexy knickers, exclusively, and cheap firewhisky. Where are you going?"

Fay laughed, nodding her head. "You're right on the money, honey. That is in fact all we have packed for our vacation and we share a bed the entire time." She added just for fun, nudging him slightly.

"We're off to America. To California, and Disneyland. For a bit of muggle-inspired fun." Fay, being a muggleborn, had grown up in the muggle world and had the pleasure of a few vacation that involved muggle amusement. She also had grown up for quite a bit of her childhood in America, and had always wanted to go back and visit. "Want to come? I'm sure we can find a way to fit the three of us in one bed."

"Shut your mouth."

Eddie grinned at the unlikely prospect of sharing a bed with the Gryffindor girls, guiding Fay onto the sidewalk of a more populated street.

"Besides, I had an irrational fear of Mickey Mouse as a child. Best not to risk meeting the bastard in person."

"Make me." She teased back, sticking her tongue out at him.

The comment about Mickey Mouse caused Fay to burst out into laughter, covering her eyes with her hand in a literal face-palm.

"Oi, you know it's just a person in a suit right? Not a real giant talker mouse." Fay pressed into Eddie's side as they made their way through the more crowded street. "But I don't blame you, I used to be freaked out by those big suited things too."

Expression breaking into mock surprise at her comment regarding Mickey's not being real, Eddie took the opportunity of Fay's closeness to loose his arm from hers and slip it around her back.

"Used to? I still am. Merlin knows who's in there."

She slipped her arm around his waist when he moved his to her back, and walked side-by-side with him like that with ease. It felt nice to be close to someone. Fay couldn't lie that she'd been a bit lonely as of late.

"Usually it's underpaid, sweaty and irritated teenagers who live in the city around it trying to make some extra cash to party with." And girls who had some serious need to dress up like a princess all the time, but that was another story. "You'd like tinkerbell."

"I'd like to show her how to use a real wand," Eddie mused, smirking. He glanced up at a street sign, orienting himself before turning the pair left. The walk wasn't nearly as long with company as it was alone.

"So, you intend to get all of your rule-breaking out of the way on holiday before returning to uphold the law? I have to admit, I've always thought 'Hitwizard' sounded a lot cooler than 'Auror.'"

And ferreting out folks who bore Muggleborns like Ed particularly ill will did not appeal in the least.

"Are you sure you know how to use your wand, Ed?" Fay was relentless when it came to flirtation, and she had to admit that ever since she was told she was a witch, hearing boys talk about their wands always sounded like a double entendre. It was an amusing part of being a wizard. At least she thought so, anyway.

"Oh definitely. I'm going to do all the sorts of things an eighteen year old girl shouldn't or isn't supposed to do and then come back and make sure other eighteen year olds don't do those things. The perfect bit hypocrisy, right?" Fay had never been one for rules, but that's why she wanted to be an Auror more than a hitwitch.

"Aurors have less rules, but I'd be happy with either. I just want to be, you know, proactive about saving my own skin when it comes to the likes of Lady Noir and whatnot. I wasn't on the list, fortunately, but I'm still a muggleborn. Not exactly like I won't always have a target on my head."

Refusing to engage with her on the point of his wand prowess - the answer was, of course, yes, on all counts - Eddie nodded his understanding.

"I suppose that's why you were a Gryffindor and I was a coward."

His expression darkened slightly at the mention of Lady Noir. There'd been some whispers from his other employer regarding blood status and operating well under her radar, but as pricking his finger or filling out some sort of application hadn't been a part of his work, they were none the wiser regarding his background. And he preferred it stay that way.

"Not being in Gryffindor doesn't make you a coward." Fay may have been the more courageous type, but that didn't mean she was the most courageous, or that those in other houses weren't also brave.

"You got all the smarts, love, I got all the brawn." She lifted her free arm and flexed it comically before laughing. "There's strengths to both of those things you know. You can think of all the ways to get me out of the messes I courageously run into."

"I wasn't planning on doing much thinking tonight, so, mind yourself," Eddie remarked, expression brightening as they reached the smoky little club he'd chosen for their first, and perhaps only, stop. If Fay found it to her liking, of course.

It was just the sort of place Ed liked to haunt, a small crowd of muggles within seated around spare little tables smoking and chatting softly. There was a band playing in one cramped corner under dull red and purple lights, and a handful of smartly dressed dancers spinning near enough to the bassist for a grinning young woman to sneak a drag off of his cigarette between bars.

Eddie quirked his brows at Fay, a clear invitation for her to suggest they stay or go.

"I'll do my best." She said, holding her hand up like she was making a pact to try and not do anything too stupid. Fay certainly couldn't promise anything, though. She wasn't planning on thinking totally straight tonight, either.

When they walked inside, she was surprised at the sort of place that Eddie picked, but she immediately loved it. The atmosphere, the music. It reminded her of some old movies her parents liked to watch. It was very old-timey muggle. She really did like it.

"Oi, yeah, let's get a drink here. This is lovely." She said, speaking closer to Eddie's ear so he could actually hear her, considering it was loud enough to make normal conversation difficult.

Eddie grinned.

"Glad you approve," he replied, turning to show Fay the same courtesy, lips brushing her ear lightly.

He held up two fingers when the bartender looked their way, and he poured them each of a shot of Ed's usual: well Scotch whisky.

She couldn't help but shiver slightly when Eddie's lips brushed her ear. It felt nice to be out with someone again, but at the same time Fay still felt reserved in a way, not quite as open as she had been before.

The shot was handed to her by the bartender - whiskey by the looks of it, and she took it up in her hand and held it up in toast.

"Thank you for taking me out." She said, tipping the shot slightly in his direction.

"You've earned a night out," Ed answered, raising his own glass with a nod. He hadn't forgotten what studying for N.E.W.T.s was like - he wasn't sure emotional scarring of that nature could ever be forgotten.

He downed the shot and didn't have to ask for another. He'd been here before.

The pianist rose from her worn bench at the close of the song, relieving the vocalist, and leaned into a new song. Rather than try to talk over the lilting horns, Ed simply extended his hand, his expression equal parts practiced charm and boyish swagger.

She downed her shot like a true champ, despite the fact that much harder alcohol like this was quite difficult to get in a place like Hogwarts. She wasn't new to drinking in the slightest, though, and hardly even made a face as the shot burned down her throat.

The music changed and a new song came on, and Fay tapped her foot slightly to the song. She really enjoyed it, even if she hadn't heard much like it before. It suited her style, in a way.

Before she knew it, Eddie had stood and offered a hand to her - the expression on his face bringing a smirk to rise to her own face. She took his hand and let him lead her onto the dance floor. "I hope you have all the right moves, Ed. I'm a wicked dancer."

Ed merely pulled her close, expertly guiding her through a few simple steps, limbs and hips loose. She didn't need to know it had been his mother who'd taught him to dance.

"But are you a wicked witch?" He asked after a moment, cheek to her cheek to allow his voice to travel over the music.

He was a fantastic dancer. She let him lead, of course, and it was easy to glide across the dance floor with Ed.

With his cheek against hers, she could hear his voice easily in her ear. He asked if she was a wicked witch, and Fay laughed.

"Oh, I'm wicked everything, sweetheart."

Ed only shook his head, chuckling as he dangled Fay out in a spin. Her dark hair whipped off of her shoulders and he fancied his fingers following the trail of pinked, bare skin above her dress.

The band launched seamlessly into a faster-paced tune and he drew her back, the swiftness of the motion pressing them momentarily quite close before he, too, picked up the pace.

Fortunately, she knew several types of dance styles and she went into the spin without faltering, a second chill running down her spine as Eddie's fingers brushed against her skin.

Pulled closer, she gave him a fiery sort of look before the pace picked up and they danced a little more quickly. Fay let herself go a bit, turned her mind off entirely and just enjoyed the dance of it all.

He hadn't noticed until they started to dance, but it seemed as though something lifted away from Fay. They were moving faster and she seemed freer, too.

"Time for another?" He asked when the song ended, inclining his head toward to the bar. He could've kept dancing, but what was the point of going out drinking on a Tuesday night if you weren't going to suffer through a hangover at work the following morning?

Fay didn't have to suffer through work with a hangover because she had no job yet, so she was free and clear to drink her way into oblivion and not really worry about it. The song ended and Eddie nodded back to the bar and she agreed, though she looked back at the dance floor a little wistfully.

"You really are a fantastic dancer. I had no idea." She'd never expected him to be so good at it. Of course, they didn't know each other all that well anyway. They'd known each other a while, sure, but it was in a very casual sense. "All you or did someone teach you those moves?"

"You liar." She teased him, nudging his shoulder with her hand in a playful sort of way. He must have learned in some embarrassing sort of way, she figured, otherwise he probably would have told. Maybe he was a closet dance fiend, who knew?

Fay gave a little smirk at the compliment, shrugging her shoulders lightly. "I, too, was born with the great gift of dance."

"Just one of the many gifts you were born with, I'm sure."

"Do I need to worry about you Apparating under the influence?"

"Of course. I was bestowed quite a few gifts, not all of which you have been lucky enough to see just yet." Fay wasn't sure what those gifts were yet, but you know, she put on a good show of it anyway. She was a lot of talk.

After ordering their drinks, she sat a little more comfortably on the stool and crossed one leg over the other, facing Eddie and perhaps leaning towards him a little more than was strictly necessary.

"After a few of these... maybe, yeah, it might be something you should worry about."

She wasn't kidding. The pair worked their way through another round, and then another, Ed contriving a wild story for the origins of his skill on the dance floor, the details of which he was like never to remember. But, a second demonstration seemed in order, whisky or no whisky.

"I'll carry you if I have to," he announced, much too loudly for the remaining patrons in the quickly emptying club, as he took Fay's hands.

And before long, they were well done and wasted. Fay had been drunk before, but perhaps this was pushing her limit just a bit. It was nice, she felt quite oblivious to all the pain and heartache she had been experiencing lately. It was like a band-aid that made you very dizzy.

Fay held on to him when he took her hands, letting him sort of pull her from her seat. "Oi I don't need to be carried quite yet." She stepped in closer to him, her forehead pressed against his chest as she steadied herself a bit, and then dragged him out to the dance floor. "And look, we have nearly the whole thing to ourselves!"
