It was later in the day than most mornings. Sun was filtering in through the kitchen windows more so than normal. Muggle appliances had a stainless steel sheen to them, a kitchen table with three chairs was off to one side, three mugs were next to the coffee maker. It was a quiet morning, very peaceful and serene. And then there came the footfalls down the stairs and a few muffled curse words as Sirius found his way into the morning. “Son of a… We have magic - you would think the coffee could make itself.” Running his fingers through his longer hair, Sirius grumbled as he made his way into the kitchen. The camera crew had been around long enough that he missed smacking most of them in his sleepy state, however he did catch his foot on a cord that brought out some more colorful language, “Yeah, well get it out of my way….” leaning against the counter, his loungepants hanging on his hips and shirtless he ran his hands over his face a few times before starting to make the coffee. Which he had prepped the night before - so it had been a large production over pushing a button. “I am not making breakfast too….” ~~ James stumbled into the kitchen with the faint smell of coffee, only half dressed, hair disheveled and eyes half open. He'd done little more than grumble at the cameraman in the hall outside the bedroom before wandering downstairs, but that was pretty much how it went most mornings. He didn't have much to say without coffee in his system. “You don't have to make breakfast,” he mumbled, moving over toward the cupboard and pulling out a few mugs, setting them on the counter by where the coffee was brewing. “Stop your grumbling.” -- It had been a very nice morning in the drawing room. Lily had opened the window and curled up on the overstuffed sofa with her tea and the novel she had borrowed from the director. It was a thrilling tale with many turns and surprises and she could tell why he’d recommended it. It would have been nice to read her book in solitude, but the young woman with the hand-held camera on her shoulder was a professional and quite fine with remaining part of the backdrop. Even after all this time, Lily was mildly fascinated by the work of the crew, and she watched with interest as the girl started taking in other aspects of the room. The sunlight behind the curtains, the children playing out in the square, the paintings that they had hung over the Black Family tapestry. Oh, that awful thing. She stretched and closed her book when she heard the sounds of further life in the house. Life and complaining. As always. Setting the book aside, she got up, abandoning her tea. “Come on,” she said with a chuckle to the girl with the camera, “this should be interesting.” -- Sirius set his coffee down to reach for the creamer in the refridgerator, not caring a bit that James would have commentary about his need for flavored creamer in his coffee. Sirius liked the salted caramel flavor thank you all the same. And he was ignoring the knowing grins of the crew. Thinking the grins were for the back and forth over the creamer. He stopped and looked at the bare counter where he coffee had sat. “Wait….I picked up a mug, I poured the elixir of the gods into it...and I set it right there.” He motioned to the counter where indeed his coffee had been. It took a pointed look from a crew member to see his ‘World’s Best Uncle’ mug in James’ hands, “Pookie….put down my mug. THAT is mine.” He narrowed his eyes, and tried to hide the grin tugging at the corner of his lips. “Give me the coffee back….” ~~ Even not being fully awake, James was quick to pick up the mug of coffee off the counter once it was filled. He held it between his hands and let the delicious smell of the coffee tide him over while it was still too hot to drink. It was almost enough to wake him up, but not quite. For that he would actually have to drink it. He was about to give in, despite knowing it might burn his tongue, but then he was interrupted by Sirius. “What, this wasn't for me?” James asked innocently, bringing the mug up to take a slow, small sip. “Here I thought you were being sweet and considerate…” -- “Neither of you are very sweet or considerate this early in the morning,” Lily said as she emerged from the stairs into the kitchen. Behind her, the girl switched off her camera and headed off to wherever it was that the crew went when they weren’t in the way. Lily was relieved by this, because there were certainly plenty of people in the small kitchen already. She wove her way between people and equipment and furniture and husbands before making it to the coffee maker and pouring a healthy measure into a white mug with a pudgy baby’s photo on the side. She then handed this to Sirius with a raised eyebrow. “There. Now you have your own. Play nice.” -- Sirius stuck his tongue out at James and kissed Lily on the cheek, “I am glad someone loves me…” He added his creamer to the dark brew and blew on it before taking a small sip, He kissed James’ forehead before taking a seat on the counter, “Lily, goddess of my life, please will you make the breakfast? This lout steals my coffee - I am worried what he would do if I were to make waffles for us.” He grinned behind his coffee cup before taking another sip, batting his eyes innocently at James the entire time. “If you do want them though - I will take the risk.” He heard the chuckles from the crew, and rolled his eyes, “I am not coming down in a towel every morning you lechers…” He pointed at a two of the grinning female crew members, “That was a slip up. And my casserole was burning.” He took another sip and gave his wife and husband a very charming smile in hopes of food appearing very shortly. ~~ “Oh, don't act like you aren't loved,” James said teasingly, rolling his eyes. He took another sip of coffee before moving over to slip his arm around Lily’s waist, hugging her back against him and pressing a kiss to her hair. “Morning, Lils.” He nuzzled against her hair a moment before letting her go. “I was going to make breakfast, because I am plenty nice. But if this one’s going to be all fussy, I'm not sure if I should.” He grinned over at Sirius and winked before moving over to the stove. It only took half a cup of coffee before he had pancake batter mixed up and a skillet on the stove hot enough to get them started. -- Lily shook her head with suppressed amusement and took a seat at the table, folding her arms on its top. She watched James at the stove, running her thumbnail along the ancient wood. “You two are hopeless, I hope you realize.” She couldn’t stop the grin, because they really did make her so happy. Not that she’d ever admit that aloud to either of them, because then where would she be? Her finger caught paper and she looked down and groaned. Her own face stared up at her, an expression of annoyance just as pronounced as the real Lily’s. She didn’t even read the tabloid’s ridiculous claim of the week before she flipped it over with a huff. “Why is this here?” -- “One of the kids brought it by - they were wondering if we knew that we were still living together in sin.” Sirius said conversationally, “And also that I am being used as a sex object.” He grinned at them both, “For the record, in case last night wasn’t enough proof - I am okay being a sex object.” He slid off the counter and reached around James to get the chocolate chips and dropped some into the pancakes on the griddle before they could be turned over, “There, even better.” He headed over to the table and took his seat, “Also, they left it for kindling - with very hopeful looks at the fire pit. So I think we might be invaded with hopes of a small bonfire at one point this weekend.” He rested his chin on the heel of his hand and yawned, “So at some point today I should more than likely clean out the pit.” he looked over his shoulder and onto the back terrace, “Maybe. Or maybe I will wait and let them help me.” ~~ “The kids should know better than to leave that trash around,” James mumbled, absently swatting at Sirius’ hand to bat him away from the pancakes. He was perfectly capable of adding the chips himself, thank you very much. A bonfire with the kids would be a great way to spend the weekend, even if they weren't burning stupid magazines, and the thought of it made him smile as he slid a few finished pancakes onto plates he had waiting on the counter. “If you wait long enough, I'm sure someone will show up to help clean it out if they want a fire badly enough,” he mused as he took the plates over to the table, setting them in front of both of them. “Otherwise, if you ask nicely, I might help.” -- “Burn the lot of them, I say. Though it wouldn’t do any good, they breed like cockroaches.” Lily picked up the magazine and held it up next to her face so that she and her photo scowled together at the nearest camera. “These. Are not. Real.” As if the lovely fans watching at home - of which there were an obscene number that she didn’t want to think about - really cared about truth and rumors. She tossed the tabloid down the table and pulled the plate towards her. Pancakes were better than gossip any day. “It won’t take much to clean it out so that the kids can come over,” she said patiently, “it won’t kill you. I promise.” -- Sirius pulled his plate closer and nodded, “True - it won’t kill me. But I would like to point out - they were the last ones to use it when they decided to house sit for us when you two decided that you wanted to come on that trip with me to the property down in the islands.” He chewed thoughtfully, “But I suppose I can play nice. Since James was wonderful and cooked for me.” He blew James a kiss and then dug around under some of the paperwork on the table, “By the way - I am heading to the store later - are there any requests? Any volunteers to join me?” Mainly he was looking for fan canon fodder so at some point they could actually get their shopping done - if he had someone with him they could rotate and thus get things accomplished. ~~ James grinned over his shoulder at Sirius before flipping the pancakes he had waiting, leaning back against the counter to wait for them to be done. “I am wonderful,” he agreed with a nod. “It's so nice of you to admit it from time to time.” With his pancakes done, he put them on a plate and joined the other two with his coffee. A trip to the store didn't sound half bad, but as he took a bite of his breakfast he tried to remember who had gone the last time. Not that they kept track of some kind of rotation, but passing it off to each other seemed the easiest way not to burn out on it. “I can go,” he offered. “I've not much to do today, unless we do the fire pit.” -- “The firepit should be easy enough for just one person to do,” Lily said as she carefully cut her pancakes into smaller pieces. “Though it would go faster if everyone pitched in. And then shopping, I have a list upstairs of what we need because one of us has to be responsible enough to know when my shampoo is running low faster than it should.” She kept her tone light but there was a mildly accusing stare. -- Sirius looked at James with a look of feigned shock, “REALLY James...you would use our wife’s beloved shampoo? The one it took her forever - i mean JUST the right amount of time to locate?” He clicked his tongue, “For shame…..” He turned and looked at the firepit and sighed, “I suppose if you are going to be all logial about things - cleaning as a group activity should be fine.” He stretched and took a few more bites, chewing thoughtfully before continuing, “And I suppose while we are out - we could get things for s’mores for the grandkids. Not that I like melty marshmallows….or anything….” ~~ “That was a pretty fast accusation, sweetheart,” James drawled, poking his fork in the air toward Sirius. “Your hair’s looking extra shiny for someone not using Lily’s shampoo. Let's be honest with ourselves, yeah?” Summoning the coffee pot over, he topped off their mugs before leaning back in his chair. If the kids were coming over there was more than just cleaning that needed to happen. He always liked to remind the crew around the house that they, and particularly the grandkids, were guests and not to be bothered. At all. But that could happen sooner to their arrival. “Last time you didn't manage to do a single one without catching it on fire, so we’ll see how you've improved with that.” He looked over to Lily with a smile. “Any special campfire requests from you?” -- “James, I told you,” Lily said patiently, “you’re supposed to light them on fire. They taste better that way. What you’re not supposed to do, however, is fling the stick around in delight while they’re burning so that they fly off and hit people.” She bit her lip to keep from grinning. “But I think you learned that lesson very well.” She settled back in her chair, arm draped over the back and considered the question. “No? I’ll bring my guitar for sure so the little ones will have a reason to be loud.” -- Sirius leaned over and ran his fingers through James’ locks, “I dunno Snickerdoodle, your wild bedhead is looking strangely under control for someone that isn’t using her products.” He stuck his tongue out at James, “I am just saying is all…” He stretched again, this time his back popping into place loudly, followed by a low moaning sigh of relief, “Finally. And I like mine singed. I do not like them flying at my head. Just for reference.” he sniffed in disdain, “It takes forever to get out of my hair.” He slid the list over to Lily, propping his feet on the rungs of James’ chair, stealing a bite of his pancakes since his own were gone, “In any way - I need to hit the hardware store. I am out of varnish for the woodwork up in the attic. No matter how I mix the ones I have it’s just not working out properly. And I am getting a buzz off of all the fumes - and not the fun kind.” ~~ “It's hardly my fault it looked neat when I was waving it around,” James replied with an airy wave of his hand, his head automatically tilting into Sirius’ touch in his hair. “And my hair looks so good thanks to the conditioner I use, not because I use Lily’s shampoo. Because that's you who does that.” He took a long drink of his coffee, smiling against the mug as he took in the two of them, they way they were both so relaxed looking in their chairs. Lazy mornings were the best - even the ones where they were already out of bed. “So the grocery store and the hardware store. Should be easy enough to manage.” Or it would be, assuming they didn't get sidetracked - by themselves or others. “Guitar’s a good idea, the kids always like that.” Plus he always liked to hear Lily play, be it guitar, cello, otherwise. -- Lily propped her chin on her fist, watching the two of them. She’d always been amused by their interactions, even when she hated them. They were so close and so well bonded and she’d wished she’d had that. Seeing them together now always made her feel nice, because they were funny and adorable and they were hers. Her mind drifted a bit as she watched them, then she was being spoken to and she had to sit up straighter and pretend that she was fully engaged with the conversation. “I’d like to go to the hardware store,” she said. She had nothing to pick up, she just knew how her two Purebloods got when surrounded by Muggle gizmos. She’d spent most of her life to this point teaching them what hammers were for and why not to wrap each other in bubble wrap, but she still worried about setting them loose. -- Sirius had been adrift for a long time in his life - even once he had James, Remus and Peter...even when he was the smirky Black that somehow got into Gryffindor...he hadn’t really felt grounded. He came and he went and he drifted through life. And then there had been this...and he was grounded. The house that he had loathed was full of laughter and life and it wasn’t a testament to the past anymore. It was something new and bright - and not just from the lighting for the camera crews. Leaning in, he caught James between sips of coffee and stole a kiss - before going to clear the plates from the table and taking the opportunity to steal one from Lily as well, “You know we CAN go to a hardware store and not spend three hours contemplating what a caulking gun is for.” he stopped in front of the sink, “I think we can anyway. Maybe…..” ~~ James made a little surprised sound at the kiss, having not seen it coming, but then chased his mouth for another one before Sirius was up to clear the table. He kept his mug, still needing more coffee, and let his foot slide over to hook the rung of Lily’s chair and pull her over closer to him so he could slip his arms around her. “I certainly don't know what a caulking gun is for,” he said with a shrug. “Other than that is sounds ridiculous. They always have such helpful people at those places, even if they do seem confused we don't know some things. You're more than welcome to come with to show us what's what, Lilykins.” -- It was strange how used to this Lily had become. The kissing, the flirting, the cuddling, all under the watchful eyes of half a dozen producers and assistants and camera people and the countless loyal viewers at home who would be getting only the juiciest bits and missing the totally boring aspects of their lives. The boring parts, Lily believed, were the best parts. She leaned into James, settling her hand on his knee as she watched Sirius bustle about with the dishes. “Not every Muggle in the world knows about caulking,” she replied, “I’m sure the nice people are used to clueless folks needing instructions on how to use screwdrivers.” She rested her chin on James’s shoulder so she could peer up at him. “I’ll tell you a secret, even I don’t really know what’s what in those places.” -- “I knew it!” Sirius said with a smirk over his shoulder, “I knew you were pulling stuff out of thin air.” He kicked the dishwasher door closed and finished putting away the breakfast making supplies, popping some of the chocolate chips into his mouth as he did so. “Alright - I am going to go and change before I tackle the mess that is our fire pit. Because if we are out running and errands and not here - that means that your spawn and their spawn will be here when we return. Because we are leaving the house unattended.” He came back towards the table and topped off his cup with the last of the coffee, “And then I am going to take a shower before we go shopping - a shower that you are both more than welcome to join me in should you opt to.” he grinned at them over his coffee cup, “I am open minded that way.” ~~ Once her chin was resting on his shoulder, James gave a kiss to the tip of Lily’s nose. He loved how easy everything felt, that they were still them like they'd always been, just with the addition of Sirius there too. It was almost concerning how easy it was, how seamless the transition had been, how well they all fit together and just worked. They were lucky - he was lucky. “Really darling, you are open minded?” he teased, looking up at Sirius and smirking softly. “All this time I thought you were some close minded prude. You've certainly done nothing to disprove that in the past…” -- Lily’s gaze tracked back to Sirius and she held out her hand, reaching for him. Cuddling up to James was perfectly lovely, but she’d grown quite fond of the additional warmth and he was very far away and it just wouldn’t do. The only real trouble was getting up in the morning because those two idiots often slept far too late and she was often trapped in a tangle of limbs, but that part was almost like a game, getting up without waking either of them. “I would love a shower,” she said, ignoring James’s teasing. “Better look my best when facing the public,” she said with a little scowl, “don’t want another full spread like the one on my hair looking brittle at the street fair.” -- He wrapped his arm around Lily and nuzzled her throat softly, “Well, then milady - I will gladly join you once I am done with the other things. And try to kiss you both while I am sweaty and covered in soot and such. Because I know how much you both love when I do that.” Kissing the top of each of their heads, He headed out of the kitchen and upstairs whistling as he went, calling back over his shoulder, “Oh, and if someone is going to get possessive over shampoo - I would like to have a conversation over how my shirts seem to end up in her part of the closet so often. It’s almost like she wants us shirtless all the time…” ~~ James reached up to lace his fingers into Sirius’ hair as he nuzzled into Lily’s throat. It was perfect to have them both right there, both his favorite people, all of them wrapped up together and happily so. Cameras or no, this was the life, and he would be damned if anyone tried to convince him otherwise. “Hear that, Evans?” he murmured with a grin, his fingers tickling against her sides. “We’re onto you and your shirt stealing scheme.” -- Lily laughed aloud and pushed away from James and got up from her chair. “I can’t help that they’re comfortable and smell like you.” And the shirtless thing was also true, but she wasn’t about to admit that in front of the entire Wizarding public and certainly not in front of her husbands. “If he’s going to take care of the pit, someone should check the marshmallow and sausage supplies.” She gave James a very pointed look as she moved towards the stairs out of the kitchen. She paused at the foot of the stairs and glanced across the kitchen towards the crew. “I’m going to go do some light cleaning,” she told them, “come along if you want a thrilling time…” |
