WHO: Fred and George
WHEN: Immediately following this.
WHERE: The Twins' Flat
WHAT: The world has gone bananas
RATING: Medium-high for language
WARNINGS: Addled brains and kidnapping and etc.
STATUS: Closed/Incomplete

So George's day had started out badly. Very, very badly. Yesterday had been so nice and then some crazy lady had to go and ruin it by stealing him from his own living room. How she had done so was a complete mystery and actually lent itself to his theory that it was all some big dream or hallucination. It could still be a Fred trick, he supposed, but Fred didn't usually wait this long to say 'GOTCHA!'

Also, George had lost the hearing on his left side, which maybe was a coincidence or something to do with yesterday. Would he have to put a note on the Portable Swamps? Caution: May cause deafness. So that was something he needed to check out, but first he needed to find his twin to let him know that, even though he'd been stolen in the night, he was perfectly fine, albeit shaken.

Fortunately, the crazy lady's den of insanity was, for some reason, right across the road from his own new home (again, probably not reality, here) and so it was a short sprint across the cobblestones and upstairs into his flat. He hesitated on the threshold. Hadn't there been moving boxes yesterday? Why was there a stain on Hector and a mountain of dishes in the sink?

What. The. Fuck.

"Has the world gone completely insane?" He asked the empty front room.

George felt something crumble in his guts. He knew Fred. He knew Fred better than anybody on earth, better than himself. He knew when Fred was telling the truth. Right. So either he had gone completely bananas or the entire universe had. He didn't feel particularly mental, he felt fine, actually. Aside from the hearing thing and being considerably freaked out, but all-in-all, he could think clearly.

But entire universes didn't just go batshit overnight. Nope. It was probably in his head. Or was it both? He still had the thought that the world as he saw it was in his head, which very well could be broken, he didn't know.

So he grinned. An easy, cheerful grin that reflected none of the sheer panic that was going on inside him. "You figured it out!" He said with fake brightness and he held up his hands in surrender. "Hah. I thought for sure I had you."

As much as George knew him, Fred had the same sort of connection with his brother. He tilted his head curiously because there was something behind that brightness and his hands in the air. The smile didn't quite meet his eyes and he knew that something was wrong. Something so bad that he was willing to fake like he was alright which usually meant that things were terrible.

"George?," he began. "Come on, just tell me what's going on. We both know that you can't fake a smile to save your life. Not with me. What's up?" He glanced over at the stove, then back to his brother. "I'll put the kettle on. You explain."

George's hands fell and hit the sofa with a loud thud. Well. He assumed it was loud, anyway. Hard to tell, really. "Damn," he said, dropping his head and sniffing a bit as the frustrated tears threatened again. "It was worth a shot."

He sighed and raked his hand through his hair. "I told you," he replied, a note of actual pleading in his voice. He wanted someone, anyone to believe him. "I woke up next to a strange girl and she yelled at me and I don't know what's happening and everything here is wrong and I don't know why."

Fred blinked a little because the more closely he listened, the more he was sure that there was truth in his brother's voice. "What strange girl?," he asked. "You said you were staying the night with Lydia so I figured that's where you would be. Weren't you there? How did you end up somewhere else?" Maybe it was another girl. That would be very awkward and very wrong, but it was possible, maybe. "What did she look like? What did she yell at you about?"

"The girl said she was Lydia," George offered, "but I don't know any." He rested his elbows on his knees and rubbed his eyes. Then he sighed. Might as well answer the question. "Blonde, pretty, loud dog. She yelled because she thought I was her boyfriend and I'm not." He flicked his gaze up to Fred. "Sound familiar at all?"

He blinked at his brother like he'd lost his damned mind. "George...," he began, uncertain of what to say or how to react when his twin had seemingly forgotten entirely about his girlfriend's existence. "Lydia is your girlfriend. You just went out of the country with her on holiday," he pointed out. "I'm sure there are at least a million photographs of it in your room, you can look for yourself." He blinked a little. "You seriously don't remember her?" Something was terribly, terribly wrong and Fred had no idea where to even begin fixing any of it.

"I don't want to alarm you, George, but... I think we need to take you to see a healer," he told his brother.

Well at least Fred believed him even if he didn't agree that strange women appearing without clothes on was a strange thing. That had to count for something, at least. "That's what she said," he replied, "and she had a picture. It's like I'm in some other part of my life that's totally made up and the joke's on me and I just want to fix it and put things back." He shook his head. "It's not real. That's exactly it. I've been thinking it for a while, and soon I'm just going to wake up and I'll be back where I belong." He nodded and rubbed his hands together as if this settled the matter, because in his head, it did.

He waved away the suggestion to see somebody. "Nah. They're part of the make-believe, they won't have anything useful to say. Maybe I should go do something fun and totally impossible..." He only had to think a moment before he realized what he wanted to do. "Hey, do you know where Alicia lives?" Because this wasn't the real Fred. It was okay for him to know.

"No," he told his brother, the urgency in his voice obvious as he moved towards him. "It's not all make-believe. What you think you know about that other life is make-believe, George. You will not do anything impossible like trying to jump off a building or whatever dangerous thing that you're thinking because this isn't fake. You're here. Really here. You'll hurt yourself and it won't be a joke. I'm serious, George. Don't do any;thing stupid." The mention of Alicia made his eyes widen.

"Oh, you have got to be out of your bloody mind!," he told him, shaking his head. "Alicia is married George. You have a girlfriend. You cannot be seriously thinking about going over there. You really have gone and gotten yourself into some real mess if you don't remember all of that."

What kind of stupid dream was this? Whoever was writing the script was a real buzzkill. Lucid dreams were supposed to be about fantasy and wish fulfillment, right? Not getting shouted at by a stranger and having the proper pretty girl unavailable.

"Fine," he said, slouching down, arms folded. "Real Fred's much more fun than you are. Not even letting me enjoy myself. I've had a really bad pretend day and if I can't wake up, then what else am I supposed to do?" The healer thing? He supposed that couldn't hurt. Maybe they could fix his hearing.

"Well you're the dream guide," he decided, "you can lead or whatever."

It was quite obvious that he wasn't going to be working today at all. No, he was going to have to keep his apparently insane twin from doing something even more incredibly stupid than what he'd likely already done to poor Lydia. He hoped whatever was going on that he figured it out soon and George got back to himself before he did irreparable damage to his relationship.

"We need to go to a healer," he told him. "I'm going to make sure the shop's covered for the day so I can take you." He'd send of a message and get that taken care of and then maybe he and George could get something figured out. "What did you say to Lydia?," he asked him. He was honestly afraid of what his brother was going to tell him.

Pretend person or not, George actually did feel kind of bad for calling her crazy, especially given that she hadn't actually been crazy, just a figment of his imagination and he was playing the game wrong. What the hell had been in that swamp?! Caution: May cause psychotic hallucinations.

"Um," he said, feeling a little sheepish, "that she was crazy and I didn't know who she was and that she'd... kidnapped me?" Yeah, it sounded totally insane and horrible and thank goodness she wasn't real.

Fred palmed his face when his brother told him what he'd said to Lydia. He wasn't sure how the hell he'd be able to get out of all of that, but he hoped for everyone's sake that whatever illness or curse was plaguing his brother, it would go away quicker that it had come on. It was all ridiculous and it made him remember the dreams of dying. His stomach churned uncomfortably. "I really, really wish that you hadn't said all of that," he muttered. "I don't know how we're going to be able to explain any of it. But right now we just need to worry about getting you back to normal before anything else goes horribly wrong."

"What's there to explain?" George asked with genuine curiosity. "It's not like she's real." Neither was Fred, as a matter of fact, but George didn't think it would do any good to point that out and make his fake twin cranky.

"And I am normal," he said with a little huff. "It's the world that doesn't exist. But, as I said, you're the dream guide. Guide me." He sat up straighter and held out his arms as if in supplication. "If enlightenment is to be found with the Healers, then lead the way."
