He startled her a little, but only because she was already a bit on edge from being in such an unfamiliar environment. She didn't leap from her chair or throw her notebook or anything, she just looked up quickly then immediately calmed when she saw who it was. She was glad to see her brother, though still nervous about what she intended to tell him.
