Who: Bethanie Dunstan and Laurel Fawley.
What: Bend it Like Beckham at the cinema.
When: Thursday 9 June, after work.
Where: Inverness.
Rating: U.
Bethanie hadn't known what to expect from Bend it Like Beckham, which hadn't made her any less nervous about suggesting it as something Laurel might like. All she had to go on was the poster, and her general knowledge of film tropes. She knew what kind of film she was expecting, but not whether it would be a good example of its kind or a bad. Then there was the added pressure of Laurel not having been to a cinema before, or having any experience of films or football. Bethanie had been prepared to leave at any time if Laurel found it overwhelming, or boring, but if Laurel had she had given no indication and they'd sat through the whole film. Mostly, it had been in companionable silence. Bethanie would readily admit she had a habit of making the odd sarcastic comment when she was watching something, but it hadn't seemed fair to distract Laurel the very first time she was in a cinema so she'd managed to restrain herself.
Contrary to Bethanie's worst expectations, the film had been good! At least, she had thought so. Even thought she had barely more knowledge of football than Laurel, she had thoroughly enjoyed it. She wanted to ask Laurel what she thought and to talk about books, and how Laurel's week ha been - but as they left the cinema she was suddenly nervous. What if Laurel had just wanted to see a film and go, and not talk? "We could get some food," Bethanie suggested, hoping the remark didn't draw attention to her size, or make Laurel thing food was all she could talk about. "Or just some tea. My flat's not far." That might be better, because then they wouldn't have to worry about anyone overhearing what Bethanie was sure would be a conversation inclined to compare the magical and muggle worlds.
