Seth woke up.
In and of itself there was nothing unusual about this. What was unusual is that when things had gone dark he hadn't known if he would wake up again, or where he would wake up. Seth believed in God, and if God was anything like what Seth had imagined then the only places he could imagine being in would be either cold and dark or lit by fire.
Seth woke up and he was still afraid, and it was better than everything he'd wanted it to be. He woke up and knew, knew, that this had to be Hell, and he would never stop feeling this, this would last him an eternity and sustain him through all of the torment waiting for him--
--but Jonah's bandaged hand was still in his, so Seth opened his eyes.
If this was Hell, Jonah wouldn't be here. Somehow even though they had done the same things (almost) and felt the same at the end (he had to believe that) it was impossible to imagine Jonah being here with him if this was the place he had thought he was going to. They would be apart in Hell. That would have been the point. Seth wasn't afraid of suffering. But it wouldn't have been the same if Jonah was with him. Even when they were small it was easier when Jonah was there, and there wouldn't be anything easy about eternity, about knowing that he would never know what had happened to his brother. It wasn't dying that had made him afraid. If it was he would have crawled out of their house and left Jonah behind. But he had stayed. He'd stayed so they could have that together. That had been more important.
He took a breath and then coughed, which sent abrupt, unexpected spears of pain through his ribcage, like being shot again only more, and he was suddenly aware that his leg hurt, like his arm did. He'd landed on it wrong somehow when they fell. It hadn't hurt that much then, and he didn't understand why it hurt more now. He was too blurred to try to figure out why. Everything felt heavy, and for now he had more important things to think about.
"Jonah?" When Seth turned his head it swam nauseously, and focusing on Jonah's face was difficult for a few seconds. (He didn't let go of his brother's hand. He couldn't do that. It scared him too much.)
