A more normal person might have been put off by the growing evidence that this person is definitely somehow off, but Laura was too strange herself to be anything but baffled. She did sharply pick up on 'underwear on the outside'--which made her suspicious, in turn, because his words contradicted himself. Yet he didn't smell like he was trying to be deceptive. Possibly because he was insane, but Laura couldn't make that judgment yet.
She had to curb the instinct to unsheathe her claws and demand that he tell her what he knew. She had the vague sense it would be...wrong to do that, to someone who seemed this old and fragile.
"What is your mission?" Laura blithely ignored that he said it was top secret; she might as well ask civilly before she moved to other tactics.
