The world was changing. These days, people didn't know what to do or how it would change again. Would they wake up in their beds to find their house had been moved to the next county? Lush forests would spring up overnight on land ready for development. Entire buildings would find themselves moved to other locations to make way for a lake. People were claiming to have been attacked by vampires, or had seen mysterious flying objects. There were once extinct animals suddenly thriving. The rumors and sightings of what everyone knew to be fiction grew at such an alarming rate, that it took everything the people in power had to try and maintain a sense of order.
But the most obvious change to the world, one no one could just ignore, was the fact an entire metropolitan city had appeared next to the small town of Red Oak, Delaware. The government had finally had enough. They sent researchers and the military into the city to find any clue to what was going on.. But all they'd discovered so far was that city was called Metropolis and according to the atlases in the libraries there, it was right where it was supposed to be.
While Earth was trying to keep from becoming more chaotic than it already was, the problems it was having hadn't gone unnoticed by outside eyes. In fact, there was a department that specialized in that sort of occurrence. They were called the Inter-Dimensional Police Department. Located in place between time, space, and realities, they policed their own home called the MetroNexus as well as trying to keep the balance of the Multiverse. They did their best to pursue criminals that jumped dimensions and realities, all while trying to keep lesser colonies aware of the universe. This particular version of Earth had been one labeled as a "No Fly Zone" as nothing of the unusual happened there. That had been until a few months ago, when everything started getting topsy turvey. But to keep from starting a panic about invasion, the IDPD had sent out an agent to keep an eye on things and to report back on the happenings.
Unfortunately for Inspector Tanith, they'd sent her. She normally loved field work, but this had been a purely fact finding mission. But with the changes coming more rapidly she was hoping to finally see some real action. A few demon slayings and quick alien arrests were fine, but they were sporadic at best. She needed something real for her time. She was a dragon for All Father's sake. Just because she had the ability to wait around a millennia didn't mean she wanted to. She knew that was why they chose her to do this job, but damn was it annoying.
With the situation of Metropolis appearing, the stakes had risen considerably. It was, by far, the largest change to the landscape for the time being. So much so that according to her scanners, the breaches in reality were just going to get worse. The largest one was located right where Red Oak was, and so Tanith had set her base of operations there. She was a under the guise of Tai Jiang, an independent researcher, studying the history of the town. It hadn't been too hard to make her existence real on this planet as the technology the IDPD had access to was far more advanced than the 21st century. With the new information already sent out, she'd already received confirmation from her superiors that they were sending her some back up. They'd continue the research and she was to start making political connections. Since the problem was already escalating, they had to be prepared to send in the troops to make the transition easier.
It wasn't every day that the Multiverse started collapsing.
Tanith sat in front of her communications console and sighed. Word was that something or someone was causing entire realities to be destroyed. Everything that was slipping through to this reality were all fragments of realities now gone. This reality was becoming the home for the survivors, or maybe it was just becoming a salvage yard for the wreckage. This Earth was going to need to start shaping up and learn to deal with this in an orderly fashion. That meant she was going to have to start working with the bureaucracy. "I hate politics," Tanith mumbled as she bit the head off a McDonald's cookie. Why couldn't the backup do that? She was senior officer, she could order them to do it, right? She supposed not. She doubted they could handle something that important. If anything went wrong while she was doing it, she could always just shift and eat the offending politician. It might be frowned upon, but what were they going to do, shoot her?
With another sigh, Tanith stood up and left her office, her gaze flickering to her surroundings. The building she was renting out was an old warehouse that still smelled of the lumber it once housed. There was a small kitchenette set up in an another office and the one she'd just exited had her tools set up. Scanners, computers, and the rest of gear all stored inside, safe from prying eyes. The rest of the large warehouse was used for her sleeping quarters, after all, hiding a twenty-three feet tall frame wasn't easy and while she didn't mind the human body, she relished in sleeping in her true form. Of course now she was likely to need to make room for the kids.
This just kept getting better and better. With a slight growl, Tanith decided to start cleaning up a bit as she waited for her reinforcements.
