Running. Running is what Raizo had done for years. Always running. Always moving. He couldn't sit still. If he did his brothers might find him. If they found him, Takeshi would no doubt be the one to take the pleasure of sticking a blade deep into his heart. His heart. The words struck him as cold as death. He could never think of the beating organ without thinking of Kiriko. Guilt swirling in that very vessel, he wished he would have done something that day, but he didn't. Instead he stood frozen as his clan brother took a sadistic pleasure in removing her life force from this world. He knew then that what he was studying was wrong, but even after that he didn't have the courage to run away. The Ozunu clan was the only family he knew. Their home was the only home he knew.
It would be years after her death that he finally found the courage to make a move-- Her very memory being the thing to push the young ninja to actually take the risk. A part of him had meant to die that day. He just wanted to leave his Master a warning for what he had done. Remind him that there would always be people like him who couldn't switch off their heart completely and they would be the ones to strike back. But when his body fell into the water below, something in him changed. He didn't want to die. He wanted to be the end of his Master-- A man who couldn't understand that children shouldn't be molded into your personal puppets. He would fight to survive and then he would make strong allies that would help him finish what he had started on the top of the skyscraper that night. He would not be the one to die. It would be his master that tasted death.
Now twenty-four, the ninja was no closer to his goal than he was years before when he ran away. Every night he moved on, using the darkness as his cloak. It was a routine he continued religiously, always wanting to be at least one step ahead of his enemy. But today would be different as he went from complete darkness to the light. Squinting his eyes, raising his hand to shadow him from the sudden change, he tried to assess what had happened to him. Instead of running with quiet steps in a forest, he was in the middle of a town during the morning he'd guess from the location of the sun.
Bewildered, Raizo did the only thing he could and grabbed the nearest person, speaking in imperfect English, "Where is here?"
