This was not her scene. At all. Getting all dressed up to make small talk with stranger, most of which were high society? Not something she was particularly fond of. But she and two of the other newer staff members had been invited- or forced, in her case- to attend with the enticement of all the connections that this sort of networking could lead to. It had sounded alright in theory, but the event was proving to be even more boring that she had expected; no one really paid much attention to a twenty year old Prophet writer, despite her best attempts. She thought it was quite understandable that she wasn’t in the best of moods right now.
Apparently, her superior had expected that, if his sharp hiss of “Goldstein, be nice or I swear…” when they were entering was any indication. And she had been nice. Well. Okay, she had ‘accidentally’ nearly broken a man’s foot with her heel, but he had deserved it; he was nothing shy of sleazy, and he clearly thought that she was the type who’d sleep with anyone if it got her somewhere, not to mention the fact that he was blatantly trying to look down her dress. He had it coming, really, and she was almost positive that he was too thick to realize that it hadn’t been an accident.
But the whole thing had left a rather sour taste in her mouth and a desperate need for a drink. With a polite smile, she excused herself from the woman she was speaking with. It wasn’t like she was missing much; she was currently blathering on about her hairstylist as if he was some sort of Messiah. Stimulating conversation, that is. Sigh. Thank whatever higher power there is that she wasn’t born into that sort of lifestyle. She couldn’t understand how anyone could be that vapid and superficial. It was mind blowing, and if she were less frustrated, she may have even been sort of morbidly intrigued-
Oh, hello, that was a person she just jostled. Awkward.
“Oh, sorry about that, I wasn’t paying attention to-” she fell silent as she realized just exactly who it was. Addison Montague. “Well, fuck.” She had to pause to just stare for a minute, taking a moment to process this. It shouldn’t be a surprise. He worked for the ministry, after all. But still. How was one supposed to act around the person you spent a good seven years endlessly antagonizing?
Cursing was probably not the solution though. An instant after composing herself, she glanced around nervously for her coworkers, making sure that none had heard her; some lecture on proper behavior and language when in such company wasn’t something she looked forward too. Fortunately, there was no one she knew around so she tentatively glanced back at Addison.
Awkward indeed.
