RP: First Date
Who: Lavender Brown and Oliver Wood
When: 08 September 2005
Where: Diagon Alley
What: A date, he thinks
Status: Closed
Rating: PG

Oliver paced a bit in his bedroom and sighed. He wasn't sure what possessed him to ask Lavender to dinner, but he was committed to doing this. She was a nice girl, and it was just one date. It wasn't as if it had to be anything more. It had been eight years, and he knew Colin would be going off to school and he might want to have more to life than his son and quidditch. But it didn't make it much easier.

He picked up the small bouquet of daisies off the counter in the kitchen on the way out the door. Witches still liked flowers, right? He was rubbish at this. He was rubbish at dating before his wife died, and this only made it worse. Not that he and his wife really ever dated. Drunken shagging a few times before she showed up at his door didn't really make much of a relationship. Truthfully, the last serious girlfriend he had was at Hogwarts. He shook his head. For all the rumors of the sex god Wood was, he was just an awkward bloke.

He apparated over to Lavender's and took a deep breath. He smoothed down his dark blue button down shirt that he had tucked into a nice pair of jeans. Nothing too fancy, but he looked okay. He took a deep breath and knocked on the door.

Oliver blushed. She was a nice girl, and flattering. He could appreciate that. "Thank you," he said, taking a drink to cover up his embarrassment. He really didn't think he was that special.

"Yeah, I know, but coming home pissed out of your mind doesn't work well the next morning when you have an eight year old bouncing on your bed demanding pancakes." He shook his head. "I do get babysitters, Colin has a nanny, but I don't like leaving him overnight unless I am traveling for work."

Lavender was the kind of girl who believed in the treat others the way you want to be treated philosophy. It wasn't always successful, obviously. And she did have moments where she slipped up, especially since her scarring. But for the most part Lavender was sweet because she liked when people were sweet to her. It was a do "do unto others" kind of thing.

"Well you should be careful you don't run yourself ragged that way. Everyone needs a break now and again. Even pro-athletes." Lavender grinned a little. She'd seen enough frazzled parents, trying to do everything and never taking time out for themselves, to know what that lifestyle could do. It was one of the reasons she had avoided it. Although certainly not the main one.

Oliver nodded. "I know, I know. But I've only got 3 years left with Colin before he goes off to school. I do try to have some grown up time, but still, overnights are just a big deal. He's got some fears over me dying, because of his mum." Oliver shook his head, "But I am sure you don't want to hear me talk about him endlessly. It's just hard, he's been my life for the past eight years. Usually my friends have to tell me to shut up." He knew he talked too much about Colin, but he couldn't help it.

"Then again, once he is gone off to Hogwarts, I plan on doing something. Probably start off with traveling a bit, maybe even start transitioning to coaching. I can't expect to fly forever." Oliver had enough money to support himself and Colin comfortably for a long time, but he didn't want to leave the sport again.

Lavender smiled and just kind of nodded. No, she really didn't mind hearing about Oliver's son. It definitely wasn't first date etiquette, but it wasn't a subject they could avoid entirely either. It just didn't quite make the most date-appropriate conversation.

"No, but you've still got a lot of good years left, I'm sure. Unless something horrible were to happen." Which they had already discussed. But it wasn't like he was old, especially by wizarding standards. He could probably play for ten or twenty more years yet. "I suspect coaching isn't quite as fun as actually playing. Then again I've never been real great at either."
