Warnings: I hate hospitals
Condoms: 5 to hunter
I.
Michael sat in one of the uncomfortable hospital chairs, elbows on his kneed, his head supported only by his hands as he waited.
He’d been here before. The same gnawing feeling in his stomach. The same feeling of dread clouding his judgement.
Taking a deep breath he glared across the hall at the window to the room where he had spent the past few days. The beeping monitors and steady rise and fall of a chest were getting to be too much. It was excruciating.
“Michael, are you okay?”
“Is he okay?” He asked, looking up concerned. “Is something wrong?”
II
“He’s okay.” Ben said, “No change.”
Michael closed his eyes, letting his head sink back down.
“I can’t stay in there.”
Ben sat down next to him, “I know, it’s hard and you’re being so strong, Baby.”
Michael leaned into Ben’s shoulder and the two of them just sat there quietly for a few moments.
“I’m going to go get some tea,” Ben finally broke the silence.
Michael nodded, “I’ll go sit with him.”
Ben bit his lip, pressing a kiss to Michael’s temple before he stood and started down the hall.
Michael stood and stepped back into the room.
III
Hunter was asleep, as he had been all day and what scared Michael was that he was so pale, and barely moving. It was so different. Three days ago he had been bouncing around the house complaining about Michael’s cooking and avoiding studying for his finals.
He sank into a chair and placed his hand on top of Hunter’s.
“You’ve got to be okay, do you hear me?” he whispered. He could hear the exhaustion in his voice. He hadn’t slept since they’d been here, but with good reason.
“I hear you.”
Michael looked up to see familiar, brown eyes.
IV
“You’re awake.” He smiled.
“Mmm…” Hunter rolled his head to the side to face him.
“How are you feeling?”
“Tired,” he admitted.
Michael moved his hand a little farther up Hunter’s arm, “Just rest.”
“Am I okay?” Hunter asked.
“You’re going to be fine.”
“I want to go home.”
Tears pricked at the backs of Michael’s eyes, “I know.”
“You can go home soon, Pal,” Ben said from the doorway.
Hunter nodded, closing his eyes again. Soon his breathing had evened out and it was obvious he was asleep again.
“He’s doing better, Michael,” Ben assured him. “He’ll be fine.”
V
Michael looked over at Ben as he slid his hand down to take hold of Hunter’s again.
“I hate it here,” he said flatly. It was a well known fact that one day he would come home from this hospital without Hunter. Without Ben. Every trip was painful.
“I know,” Ben said to him. There was nothing more he could really say because he knew exactly what road Michael’s mind was wandering down.
He walked around the bed, pulling his chair close to Michael’s and wrapping an arm around him, prepared to spend another night watching over their sick son.
