Brian felt like he'd been awake forever. He'd managed to finalize the arrangements on his own, even accepting sympathy calmly and graciously.
But now, as he walked toward the gravesite with Michael and Gus, he couldn't remember getting dressed that morning or the ride to the service or even arriving at the cemetery.
He couldn't look at his family gathered around the grave. He knew he would see the pain in their eyes and that when he did, his heart would shatter. So he stood, stunned and solitary, staring at the casket. He'd never find a way to say goodbye.
