Looking sad
I think they looked sad because they were thinking "this is the dumbest thing since the Pink Posse. We will kill each other if we are stuck out there in the middle of nowhere, whether it's really West Virginia, or just seems like it. And if (I)Justin go off to NY with no plans, no offers, just a dream, then Brian will not have to kill me, because I'll starve. I'll also be on the streets, because how long will Daphne's friend let me live with him without paying my own way? And if I have to get a job in NY to pay my way,....well, you can figure the rest out." The show's writers may done a great job with characters and story lines (sometimes) but the last episode definitely had me wondering about their grasp on real life jobs and finances. Lawyers don't move to another country where they can't practice, and you don't have to live full time in NY to paint, especially if no one's offered you a job!
I realize that people can nitpick about reality in shows when the shows deal with something that is their own area of expertise, but these two situations seemed blatantly obvious to at least anyone who lives in the U.S.--which the writers do! Hell, you can't even move from one state to another without needing to become licensed to practice law in that state.Okay, if you're the Trapp family, with the Nazis nipping at your heels, you might take the chance and flee, but however freaked they were, things weren't quite to that level.
I remember hearing that someone connected with the show felt that Brian and Justin being together wouldn't have been "realistic." But I would have given Brian better odds for changing than rules for the practice of law, or the expense factor about living in NY!
