Clothing and Character
A couple of posts the last couple days have got me thinking about how clothing can be such an important part of characterization. Yet, not something i've ever focused on in writing because i like to write them naked.
Both posts were made by plasticine_star In the first post, here, she wondered about Lindsay's rather frumpy wardrobe in season one. xie_xie_xie responded, "I honestly think that the dowdy wardrobe and hair were part of her characterization, to show her as retreating into her role as mom and withdrawing from the work world and her public persona. She had a sort of bottled up, repressed thing going on." I think she is dead on.
In the second post, here, she posted a picspam of Brian in coats, mostly in later seasons simply because she likes the look. :D But it got me thinking, do these coats have meaning or is it just that in QAFdom it's always winter in the pitts? There is a vulnerability that comes with seeing someone in a long, thick, wool, winter coat. Is that intentional? Or am I just weird and badly in need of sleep at this moment?
And what about the rest of the clothing choices through out the seasons for all the characters. What do they say about them?
How many times have i read about Justin in cargos and a t-shirt? But really, his clothing choices, especially later on, are far more varied than that. And definitely reflective of what is going on with him at given points in time I think, turtlnecks come to mind.
What do the rest of you think about the clothing choices on the show as a part of characterization? Please feel free to comment on any of the characters, not just the ones i've mentioned.
And also, where have you encoutered memorable clothing in fic? What does attention to clothing add? I can think of one pair of memorable thin clingy pants in a fic.
Um, if this is a repeat discussion, i have no idea and appologise, but there are lots of new people around this joint and i think it's a topic that is worth repeating.
this post is for libra2 in response to my challenge and my thanks to plasticine_star for the idea.
