For me this is a two part question. What do I want to read and what do I write.
I'll read anything that's well written though in thinking about it I find I tend to avoid fics where Justin loses contact with Brian after he moves to NY. Not believable to me at all. I found the whole Justin moves to NY thing in 513 so totally off the wall that I usually disregard it. I have no problem with him or them going but Cowlip never gave us a compelling reason for him to do so.
On to what I write. In my little world S5 never happened at all. So no Brian owning Babylon, no Britin, no bomb etc. I did move the two of them to NY together because that felt real to me. I don't see them making a huge decision to be monogamous. I see them more falling into that state and then realizing they've done it so they might as well stick with it and give it a try (along with raw sex.) Since Rage: The Movie was made in my world and Justin still works in an independent way in films I was able to make him successful and have plenty of money without having to make him super successful in the art world right off the bat. He is that way now but he got that way through film work and several art shows. I took that route because I wanted him not necessarily equal to Brian in wealth but never dependent on Brian monetarily.
I broke up Mel and Linds because I think it's a toxic relationship and bad for the kids.
I don't think Emmett was ever in love with Drew, it was an infatuation. He never found his one true love in canon. I didn't like Blake and never bought that as a relationship either. Ted is healthy, wealthy and fairly powerful now and he'll find a good guy.
