Hmmm, That's Odd!
happier_bunny recently did a poll about Brian/Justin sex scenes, wanting to know which scenes we thought were definitive for each season.
And we all know that I have this truly unhealthy love for 107.
So, I decided that more...research was needed. I picked up disc 2 and popped it in.
Now, disc 2 from Season One has episodes 104-107. And, as much as I wanted to watch that, I thought I'd go back and watch Justin be...well, a perfect little shit. Which he does so beautifully.
But this isn't about that, wither.
What is IS about, is...Chris Hobbs.
Now, remember, I only came to fandom about two years ago. So all the meta on this is long over and gone. But since I never saw any, I'm bringing my own.
Justin has a crush. We find this out in 102, pretty much. Justin's giving Chris the eye on the football field, and his sketchbook is full of drawings of him. We get it, Chris is actually pretty cute.
Jump to 104, and the one act that will change everything.
Chris, behaving like the proverbial jock that he is, starts cutting up in class, having what the teacher called a 'testosterone outburst". He's sent to clean the equipment room for detention. Justin smiles. Chris will be alone.
Justin shows up at the equipment room, where Chris makes a comment about Justin not liking sports. For guys like Chris, you either eat, sleep and breathe football/baseball, etc., or you're a fag. When Justin hoists a box of equipment onto the table, Chris is taken aback.
Of course, now we get to the good part. Or bad part, take your pick.
Justin tosses Chris a Pepsi. As their hands meet on the can, neither boy snatches it away immediately. Hmmm. Interesting turn of events.
Chris engages in most teenage boys' favorite past-time: talking/lying about getting laid. Except, Justin isn't your average teenage boy. But he likes Chris, so he indulges him. During a story about a young lady who interviewed him about being a football player, he becomes aroused talking about the hand job she gave him. She was wearing rings, which were cold, but her hand was warm. Of course, he's rubbing himself off while telling this.
Now, I would hope that Justin had a good reason for "helping" Chris with this problem. I mean, you don't just go grab another guy's dick out of the blue, do you? But Justin seems sure that this is what Chris wants. But is it?
It would seem so. I'm pretty positive that Chris isn't the type of guy that participates in circle jerks. There's just too big a risk that someone might get the wrong idea. But he tells Justin this story, and is very horny at this point. Justin reaches for Chris' zipper, and pulls it down...slowly. If Chris didn't want this, he had ample time to stop Justin. But, he doesn't. So Justin proceeds. He reaches in, grabs Chris firmly about the shaft. Again, Chris doesn't stop him. Justin proceeds to give Chris what is probably the best hand job he's ever had. Of course, as soon as Chris comes, the teacher shows up, giving Chris about three seconds to zip up and get up.
The next time we see Chris, he's in the locker room. So is Justin. Chris asks Justin why he hadn't taken a shower. Justin replies that he had to finish a paper for a teacher. Chris notices Justin's nipple ring. All of a sudden, Chris turns hostile, making cracks about Justin getting the ring so that his "fudge-packing friends" can pull on it.
Now, where did this come from? Was it an effort to keep any suspicion away from him? If so, why? Was anyone even interested? Was he? And why bring that up in the first place? No one knew what had happened between them. Justin wasn't following him around like a love-sick puppy. (He was saving that for Brian) So why force things between them? In fact, Justin never even brings up the incident until running into Chris on Liberty Avenue.
Skip to the prom. Justin is there dancing with Brian, and getting the filthiest of looks from Chris. Again, why? Why is Chris so obsessed with Justin? School is almost over, they can go their separate ways. Is it because Justin outed him on Liberty Ave? And even so, why did he run? He could have called Justin a liar and stood his ground. But he didn't. And as for the bashing itself, Chris was really out of it. Why then? Had he planned to do something to Justin? Did he make it a habit of carrying his baseball bat in the car? Why did he seem to not care that he may be seen? If he were watching Justin, didn't he notice Brian? That Brian hadn't left? Was he having a psychotic break?
We spent the bulk of Season 1 watching Justin and Chris fight, but it didn't start off that way. And how much further might it have gone if Chris hadn't freaked? Anywhere at all? Does it feel that we were missing a chunk of story?
In Season 4, when Cody mentions to Daphne about the firing range incident, Daphne tells Cody that Justin was likely thinking of Chris Hobbs when he fired the gun. She then says to Justin that she'd always suspected that Chris was secretly in love with him. She didn't appear to be kidding when she said it. So, just how close to the truth was she?
And as I watched these scenes, I thought about what the judge said at the trial. How Chris had been provoked to violence. How seeing Brian and Justin dancing and kissing just drove him right over the edge. How the mere thought of someone being openly gay just warped his brain. Shades of Matthew Shepard. Can't handle it, so beat the shit out of it.
Was this the best way to tell this story? Starting off as a possible mutual attraction, then have it descend into a bashing? Did I miss something? Thoughts?
