I'm beginning to suspect the water supply has been contaminated with mold spores which cause mild to severe hallucinations when ingested. It's a perfectly viable explanation. People don't spontaneously develop mind-altering trances on the fly unless they've taken something and I don't recall licking any poison dart frogs recently.
