Remus remembered when he was little his mother would read him fairytales. One of his favorite fairytales was the one where the lion, or sometimes dragon, got a thorn stuck in his paw. And the lion would rage for days, only because the thorn was causing him pain. Finally, a wise village man, or in other versions, the naïve one, would pull the thorn out and the beast was back to normal.
That fairytale is what Remus thought of when he saw James this morning. He was snapped at everyone during breakfast, just because Lily rejected him once again. The proverbial thorn was jabbed through his ribcage and right into his heart.
Remus tried to help him, he even offered to let James copy his Charms homework, but it was no use. James was grouchy all day long, he even tried to go to bed angry, but Remus wouldn’t let him. He crawled into James’s bed and said,
“Are you going to act like a little boy who’s mom refused to buy him an ice cream tomorrow too?”
“No,” He replied shortly, rolling over to avoid Remus.
“Yes, you are, and you know it too.” Remus teased, poking him in the ribs till he rolled over.
“Tell me,” He said quietly.
“It’s just that Lily said no again. Is she ever going to say yes?” James said moodily.
“Look, James, if you keep acting immature like this, then yes, she will always say no. Grow up!” Remus said calmly, resting his hand on his friend’s arm.
“Whatever Remus,” James mumbled, then rolled back over.
Remus sighed and laid back down in his own bed, knowing that one day Lily would pull the thorn out, and he would be there to tell James, ‘I told you so.’
