Who: Caroline Forbes, Santana Lopez & Dani Harper
Where: From the library to the Teardrop
When: Saturday evening/nightfall (because it has to be dark for Santana to be out and about)
What: Encountering their share of monsters
Status: Complete
Warnings: Rabid werewolves
The day had seemed normal when Dani had first left for work. Quiet, but it typically was so early in the morning. She worked the earliest shift at the Hotcake House, from six in the morning to two o’clock in the afternoon, and the day always seemed to fly by quickly. She had gotten into a routine she enjoyed -- and she especially enjoyed the lack of graveyard shifts she had to work. The customers were generally nice and friendly, and sure, she couldn’t sing, but she made good tips because she had gotten to know a lot of the regulars.
But everything had changed today. It was like this world -- universe, wormhole drop-off, whatever it was -- had gone to hell. Creatures and monsters and things Dani had never seen before were wreaking absolute havoc out there on the streets. She’d seen a good share of people running for their lives, and she’d felt like she was in the midst of a superhero movie -- especially when she swore she saw one flying by (though her eyes could totally have been deceiving her). It was totally mind-blowing, but not really in a good way. She’d never imagined having to dodge giant robots and flying monkeys and whatever Reavers were just to make it to the library alive. She wasn’t the only one hiding out there. No one wanted to brave the things out there, and she couldn’t really blame them. She’d seen her share of freaky things since she’d gotten here -- gender swapping and freak snowstorms came to mind -- but this was on a whole other scale. She was glad Santana was a sort of superhero herself, with her enhanced strength and speed and senses, even if calling her as much had probably inflated her ego beyond belief.
Any other day, if she’d heard Quinn had left, she might have been a little bit excited. Just a little bit, because even though she’d thought Quinn was a total bitch, she wasn’t totally heartless. Santana had feelings for her, and even though she didn’t get it, she respected it, or she wouldn’t have broken things off to let them do their thing. Today, though, it was just another thing that was insane and sad for Santana and her friends. Dani felt really bad for her, which is why she hadn’t tried to force her to talk about it, even if she wanted to. Santana was clearly pretty stressed already if she was insisting on putting herself in danger to bring Dani back to the Teardrop.
When she heard a familiar voice calling her name, she stood, dropping the magazine she’d been trying to distract herself with and headed toward the front entrance. “Hey, I’m okay. Relax,” she said, a small smile on her lips as she reached out to touch a reassuring hand to Santana’s arm.
It all happened at once it seemed. All the crazy creatures (not that she had room to talk, given her current situation) appearing and attacking anything and everything, it seemed and then Quinn. Santana had heard about people disappearing from this place and it being just like they’d never been here, but she never thought she’d have to deal with it. When Finn had said Quinn was gone and that all her stuff was gone, Santana didn’t want to believe it was happening. She didn’t want to believe Quinn was just gone. But, there really was no other explanation. She wouldn’t just pack her stuff and leave Rachel and Finn’s, she’d been happy there. Well, happy for being stuck in a place they couldn’t leave and all that. Though, apparently she could leave, because now she was gone. Santana wasn’t ready to process it either, all she could think about was that Dani was still here and all hell had broken loose in Portland. They’d locked up at The Teardrop, Rebekah had left to deal with some sort of family emergency and while Santana had offered to go with her, she was told to stay there and keep things under some sort of control. But, instead, she and Caroline were leaving Rachel secured in the lounge and the two of them were venturing out to the library to get Dani and bring her back. Santana needed to make sure the girl was safe. Ex-girlfriend or not, she cared about Dani and she didn’t want anything to happen to her.
Santana and Caroline had made their way through the panic and chaos of the streets to the library and once she pushed the doors open, she called out for Dani. When she didn’t answer at first, Santana started to panic, she was worried she’d taken too long. What if she was too late? But then Dani appeared from wherever she’d been hiding and the brunette couldn’t keep from wrapping her up in a big hug. “You’re okay.” She said, feeling a wave of relief wash over her as she pulled back to look at the blonde. “Okay.” She said again, looking over at Caroline with a grateful smile. “Should we try to go back the same way or find a way out the back and try a different route?”
Apparently thinking that Portland would ever really give them a break had been a rather naive idea on Caroline’s part. But she could have sworn that it was only just yesterday that the whole genderswap business had happened so surely they all deserved a longer break before the next batch of insanity. Of course once the reports of monsters started coming and actually hearing the various creatures outside of the bar, that notion had been shot to hell. Hearing that Quinn was gone too and then how Santana had wanted to leave to go find Dani and make sure she was safe wasn’t surprising, it seemed like what would happen because Caroline knew the girl cared for both girls. Losing one to the wormhole probably made it even more important that she didn’t lose the other to some random monsters. But she didn’t want Santana going by herself to find her because of a whole slew of reasons and it’d probably be better for them to head off in groups than anyone heading out alone. And Rachel was secure back at the bar.
She couldn’t help but smile as she watched the two of them reunite, even as she wondered how Stefan was doing with Rebekah and Klaus was doing with apparent werewolves coming for Hayley and the baby. If it wasn’t one drama it was seriously another. “I think we should head out back and try a different route. The one we took seemed like it was beginning to get over run.”
And while her and Santana were pretty indestructible, Dani definitely wasn’t and the last thing Caroline wanted was for the girl to get hurt or Santana to end up doing something stupid. Baby vampires weren’t all that well known for the self-control. “Has there been any activity out back that you could hear, Dani?”
Dani smiled at the way Santana clung to her for a minute there. She might not have shown it so openly, but she was beyond relieved Santana was here too. And Caroline, obviously. They were both basically her saviors at this point, but Santana especially. She knew the girl was a vampire now and was overconfident in general, but she’d still been scared for her. She didn’t know what half these monsters were or how to fight them, whether they could hurt Santana and Caroline or not. So, seeing her in one piece was definitely a good thing.
“I haven’t heard much of anything,” she answered Caroline’s question. She’d been toward the back, where it was a little quieter, and she hadn’t heard any loud banging or screaming really. “It seems like most of it’s going on out front.”
“Then we’ll definitely go out the back.” Santana nodded. The way they’d came in had been bad enough and was only getting worse. Hopefully the back wouldn’t be so bad. She wasn’t so worried about herself or Caroline, they could deal with this stuff, mostly, but Dani was still human. She was vulnerable and Santana couldn’t stand the thought of something happening to her. She’d already lost Quinn to the wormhole, she didn’t want to lose Dani too. She didn’t know what she’d do if something happened to her. It wouldn’t be good, she knew that much.
Santana took Dani’s hand, holding onto it as she led them to the back of the library and they started out of the doors. It was mostly quiet, the majority of the noise seeming to be going on out front. So maybe they’d be able to sneak back as easily as they’d made it here to pick her up.
Caroline listened for a moment, trying to make out anything unusual before they stepped out of the door and headed out into the street. She wasn’t sensing anything off at the moment and was hopeful that they’d actually make it all the way to the bar without any type of trouble. Of course because she thought that, trouble had to come their way. In the form of wolves.
Of course it’d be wolves. Because Portland couldn’t send something at them that wasn’t actually deadly to her and Santana as well as Dani. Like other vampires. Why couldn’t they have fought vampires? Because life hates you all, she thought and looked over at the other two girls.
“You don’t want to get bit,” she informed Santana, looking back at the wolves. “Because if these are werewolves--which I’m going with yep so are--a werewolf bite can kind of kill us. And while the cure is in this city, he’s kind of busy with his own thing and I dunno if we’d actually get word to him in time. So just don’t get bit.”
Dani’s eyes widened when Caroline told Santana she could die if these werewolves bit her. She so did not want Santana dying. Or Caroline. Because if those wolves didn’t kill her first, they’d definitely kill her after the other girls, because why not? It was like a deadly free-for-all out here, and Dani immediately began to wish she’d stayed in the library.
“It’s not too late to turn back right?” she asked, though she was pretty sure she already knew the answer to that. “Babe, let’s just go back, away from the deadly wolves.” It sounded like a solid plan to her, but she knew it wasn’t happening. They were already too far away to just turn back around.
Santana’s brow furrowed when Caroline told her that apparently a bite from a werewolf could kill them. Great. Because her life wasn’t fucked up enough already, now they had to deal with werewolves who could possibly bite them. This place just got more awesome every single day. What was next? Seriously, what else could this place freaking throw at her?
“No.” She said to Dani, shaking her head as she wanted to go back. “We have to get to the Teardrop. We left Berry there and she’s probably already in total freak out mode. Who knows if the place is still even standing at this point.” She rolled her eyes. Okay, so maybe worrying about Rachel Berry wasn’t the best thing to be doing right now but she had her priorities. Focusing on how annoyed she would be if Rachel had burned the lounge down or something was better than worrying about the werewolves that they were trying to hopefully just slip by at the moment.
And, of course, it wasn’t that easy. They weren’t gonna be able to just slip by and make it back without incident. Santana’s life wasn’t that simple anymore. So, when the wolves noticed them, she let out an annoyed sigh and looked at Caroline. “So much for no drama.” She shrugged and rolled her eyes. “Hide. Now.” She said to Dani and turned back just in time to duck a swing. Letting her face shift to her new form, Santana lunged at one of the wolves, tackling it to the ground. Going all vampire on someone was a thousand times more awesome than Lima Heights.
Caroline was snapping necks and pulling out hearts left and right. She wasn’t about to play around with werewolves. She’d been bit twice in her short life and she meant to never let it happen again. Those had been two of the worst days of her life, from the hallucinations to the pain, she didn’t wish it on her worst enemies. “Snap their neck or pull out their heart,” Caroline shouted at Santana. “It’s the only way to kill them.”
Because werewolves were hardwired to attack the two of them on sight and just breaking a normal limb wasn’t going to do them any good considering werewolves healed rapidly. She wanted to know where the hell they were all coming from because it seemed to Caroline like they just kept on coming and that wasn’t a good sign. Secured in Caroline’s mind that this all had to do with the damn wormhole and the weirdness it liked to spew at them every so often.
She looked around to determine where Dani and Santana were and tried to find some sort of exit for them that could help them flash to the Teardrop. It wouldn’t be the most comfortable way to travel for Dani, but it’d get them into somewhere safe faster than any other method.
Dani felt totally useless in this situation. For a human, she was decently strong, and she could deal with human attackers well enough. But werewolves? She couldn’t handle that. She definitely couldn’t snap necks or rip out hearts. These things were like dogs but way bigger and she would be wolf food before she could take a step. So, she did what Santana told her and hid in the best spot she could. She was hoping the werewolves would be more drawn to Santana and Caroline -- not because she wanted something to happen to them, obviously, but because they had a better chance of handling things -- so she stayed quiet and just watched, nervously biting down on her bottom lip and praying they’d all make it out of this alive
Santana did as Caroline had instructed and started snapping necks and ripping out hearts. God, this was awesome for her rage issues. She clearly had stuff to work out from the way she was going at these wolves, that much seemed obvious. She was focused on ridding their sudden enemies and hoping Dani had done as she asked and found somewhere to hide. At least until they could get rid of these stupid werewolves.
But they just kept coming.
Her hands and the front of her clothes were covered in blood and she was a little more than annoyed by that, she loved this outfit! Now it was totally ruined and all because this place hadn’t fucked her over enough. But, what she didn’t know was that it wasn’t done with her yet either. Snapping one of the werewolves necks, Santana turned to see if she could locate Dani and that was when she felt teeth clamp down on her and she screamed out in pain, falling to her knees just as she felt herself get bitten again.
Caroline launched herself at the wolf, hand thrusting through its back before she ripped out its heart and tossed it away from Santana. The damage was already done though and she knew they only had so long before the poison would start to do its damage. Thankfully it wasn’t a hybrid bite, those actually worked faster than a normal werewolf, but the pain and hallucinations would still start up. A set of jaws clamped down around her arm and she cried out at the contact before throwing the wolf off, thankful he hit the street with a sickening thud.
She grabbed Santana by the back of her shirt and hauled her up and close to her before she flashed her way over to Dani. There was no point in trying to defeat the werewolves, the damage had already been done, but she’d be damned if she didn’t get the two of them out of there. Taking hold of Dani as well, Caroline utilized her strength and speed to get them out of the street and to the Teardrop. She didn’t hear Rachel inside the building but was too distracted to worry about what happened to the girl now. “Dani, I need you to try and block the doors with whatever you can.”
Because who knew if the wolves would follow them there or not and the last thing they needed was for them to get into the building. Caroline lay Santana down on the ground and tried to determine how many times the girl had been bit. “Okay. You’re going to be okay. I just...need to call someone and see if he can give us some blood.”
This was such a disaster.
Everything happened so damn fast. One minute, it had seemed like the fight was going in their favor; the next, Santana was sinking down to the ground in pain. Dani couldn’t hide after that. She came out, and she tried to go to Santana, but before she’d gotten the chance, Caroline had grabbed hold of them both and everything she saw from there on out was just a blur. She knew vampires had that speed thing going for them, but she’d never experienced it firsthand. It wasn’t really fun.
She was sick by the time they’d gotten into the Teardrop, but she had to fight through it. She didn’t know how many times Santana had been bitten or if Caroline had been bitten too, but she was glad even if it did kill, it didn’t seem to be instant. Caroline was still up and moving, and while Santana was groaning and seemed to be in a lot of pain, she was alive, and that was what mattered.
“Okay, okay. Yeah.” She nodded at Caroline’s instructions and started moving the tables she could up against the front door. She was internally freaking out and wanting nothing more than to just do whatever the hell it took to make Santana better, but she knew she couldn’t. Caroline knew what was going on, and she would handle it, so Dani would just do what limited things she could to help.
”Don’t get bit.” Santana could hear Caroline’s words echoing as one minute she was outside and the next she was being laid on the ground at The Teardrop. So much for that, because she’d most definitely, without question, been bitten. Numerous times, in fact. Because, you know, it couldn’t just be once, even twice. Yeah, Portland fucking hated her, that was pretty much obvious by now. But that didn’t matter now, all that mattered was that she was in serious freaking pain. She was groaning, she couldn’t help it, this sucked! So much for the super vampire powers, because they sure as hell weren’t doing anything for her with this. She was almost positive she was in more pain as the seconds ticked past instead of healing like she usually did when she even got the smallest scratch. That probably had something to do with the fact that it was werewolves and Caroline had specifically warned her before they even attacked.
Great. Now she’d been bitten and now she was going to die. “This fucking sucks!” She snapped out, loudly. “No wonder we die from this, it has to be some kind of relief from all this pain!”
Caroline could feel the poison making its way through her body but it was going a lot slower than she was used to. But then again she’d been bit by hybrids before so it didn’t really surprise her all that much that a regular werewolf bite would take more time to really take hold. “Try not to move around too much. And be prepared for hallucinations.” Because those would come and those sucked more than the pain.
“I’ll call Klaus or Rebekah and see if she can get hold of Klaus because we need his blood.” And she knew he was kind of crazy busy at the moment since something was up with Hayley and Clara but she didn’t doubt for a second that he’d at least send someone over with his blood. Or at least she really hoped he would.
“Dani, can you try and make sure she doesn’t move around too much?” She looked over at the other girl and could see the worry. “She’ll be okay. We just need to get the cure into her and she’ll be good as new.” And thankfully the cure was in Portland because otherwise the two of them were screwed. Caroline offered up a reassuring smile and then headed over to a corner to try and get hold of one of the Mikaelsons for some help.
“Yeah, of course,” Dani answered quickly, stopping with her stacking and arranging to go to Santana. She turned to thank Caroline, for helping them even if it hadn’t turned out too well yet, but she had already gone off to make her phone calls. She turned to Santana, kneeling down on the ground beside her and taking one of her hands. She was terrified, and she was sure it showed in her eyes. Even if the cure was here, even if Caroline could get to it easily, it didn’t stop Dani from being scared. The last thing she wanted was to see Santana die.
“You’re okay, babe,” she said softly, kissing Santana’s knuckles. She didn’t like the sound of these hallucinations Caroline had mentioned, but aside from some sweating and general grumbling, Santana seemed okay so far. “Can you get up? You should lay or sit somewhere that’s not a dirty floor. Think you can make it up to a booth?”
Oh boy hallucinations, now that sounded like fun! Except it didn’t, at all. But maybe Santana could hallucinate that her veins weren’t currently feeling like liquid fire was rushing through them. She was not a fan of this, not at all. When Caroline said she was going to get ahold of Rebekah and see if Klaus could help them. Apparently his blood would heal the wolf bites. She wasn’t sure how that all worked, but right now she didn’t care. All she knew was she needed a big drink of that blood so she wouldn’t feel like she was dying anymore. She was feeling sweaty and fevery and the pain was horrible. Santana wondered how long it would be before the hallucinations would start. She had a feeling it wouldn’t be the fun kind of hallucinations either. Not like the fun ones she’d had when she and Puck had eaten way too many of his Nana Connie’s special cupcakes.
Suddenly, Dani was over here, holding her hands and kissing her knuckles. Was this real or was she already hallucinating? No, because Dani would be naked and kissing her lips, not her knuckles if she were hallucinating already. But that didn’t stop her from smirking deviously at the shorter girl. Then she realized what she’d said and the smirk faded, replaced by a look of disgust. “Why the hell would anyone think I’d be okay on the nasty floor? Get me the hell up!” She demanded, leaning on Dani as she helped her up and over to a booth. That moving around had been exactly what Caroline told her not to do and the poison moved through her again, sending pain throughout her entire body. She groaned out in pain again and looked up at Dani. “Gunther’s gonna be pissed if we make out when we’re supposed to be working again.” She grinned up at Dani. “It’s not my fault you look so hot in that uniform though. If he doesn’t want me getting my mack on at work, he needs to change the outfits.”
Okay, so the hallucinations were here. Wow, that was fast. Dani had thought it would be a little more of a slow boil, but nope. Santana thought they were home, and it actually made Dani’s heart ache. She wished they were. She wished none of this had happened: no wormhole, no vampire Santana and definitely no Quinn Fabray interfering in her relationship. But Quinn was gone now, so maybe that made things a little better, as horrible as it may sound. It would be even better when Santana wasn’t hallucinating from multiple werewolf bites. But she couldn’t deny that Santana’s words made her smile. She always had loved that Spotlight uniform. It was flattering on pretty much every girl that worked there, though Dani hadn’t paid attention to any one of them but Santana.
“Shh, sweetheart,” she said gently, guiding Santana so her head was on Dani’s shoulder. She hated this, but all she could do was try to comfort her. She just hoped Caroline could work some kind of magic with Klaus and Rebekah and get Santana fixed and back to normal soon. She didn’t know when these hallucinations could take a wrong turn and end up with Santana making Dani bleed.
Santana laid her head over on Dani’s shoulder and closed her eyes. She didn’t feel so good now and she was hurting. But Dani smelled really good and it made Santana smile. It made her think about home and how different things had been there. But that made her think about what Sam told her and she frowned. “I won’t leave and go to Lesbos with Britt, Dani. I promise. I don’t care what Trouty says, I wouldn’t do that to you. I love you too much.” She muttered, her eyes fluttering closed again.
Caroline was beginning to feel the effects of the poison, sweating as she slid down onto the floor near the two of them but making sure to give them some distance. They’d be getting blood. She didn’t exactly know who was bringing it, having started to fade part way through the conversation and unable to really focus. “Someone’s coming with the blood.”
Hopefully before either of them could get violent, but that usually took at least a day. She idly wondered for a moment where Rachel was because the girl was definitely not in the bar. Caroline hoped she was okay, but she couldn’t really focus on that as she lay back, leaning against the wall. All they could do now was wait for the blood and then figure out what do once they’d consumed that.
Probably not going back out into the street anytime soon though because she really didn’t want to tempt fate with werewolves again so soon.
