This whole alternate universe Portland thing was a total mindfuck. Dani was still trying to understand how it all worked, how she could have been pulled here through a wormhole and woken it up in a strange hospital with a holographic woman threatening to sedate her if she tried to escape. She had really believed it was a dream for the first few hours, but she'd quickly come to understand that whether it was a dream or not, she was stuck here, so she might as well get used to it.
It wasn't so bad when she realized that Rachel and Kurt and Santana were here too. But that part was a little weird too, because somehow, she was ahead of them. Like, in the timeline. That was just one more thing she couldn't wrap her mind around, so she'd just decided to blindly accept it. It didn't matter that she had seen them just before she'd been brought here, because somehow, they had no memory of it. They hadn't seen her for months.
She was meeting some of the others from Lima, too, some of Santana's friends. Blaine, Kurt's fiancΓ©, seemed a little out there. And then his best friend, Sam, who she was apparently assigned to live with, seemed just as out there. They seemed to expect life to be like High School Musical - they could burst out into song whenever they wanted and somehow be joined by back-up singers, dancers and whatever musical accompaniment they needed. Dani had kind of wondered if maybe they had been dropped on their heads as babies, but she thought that would probably be distasteful to ask. Blaine, though, had told her within the first five minutes that he'd apparently had a nervous breakdown and hallucinations. Like it was no big deal. So she blamed his delusions on that.
But Sam seemed like a nice guy. They'd talked some since they'd ended up in the same house, and he seemed a little more normal, grounded after she'd gotten to know him a little. He was one of the most rational voices she'd seen when a message popped up on the network that told them Santana was a vampire.
A vampire. It really was just one crazy thing after another in this place.
Santana acted like she was doing fine though, when Dani had finally talked to her. She knew better, obviously, and she was worried. She had come to know Santana pretty well since they'd started dating, and she knew Santana was just putting on that attitude to hide that she was scared. Vampires may not have really existed in their world, but Dani had seen enough vampire TV and read enough vampire books to know that a transition like that could never be easy.
Somehow, the vampire news had lost its shock value quickly thereafter, when Santana had dropped another bomb on her. In the few months she'd been here, she'd gone and gotten herself another girlfriend. Quinn. And Dani still didn't really know how to feel about that. She'd tried to convince herself that Santana was joking, tried to give her an out, but she had stayed firm. Quinn was her girlfriend - but she still loved Dani, she said. She still loved her, and she hadn't forgotten her, but she hadn't thought she'd ever see her again. Dani really wasn't sure how to take all this yet, so when Rachel reached out to her and invited her over, she welcomed the distraction.
She met Rachel halfway to her house and followed her home, into the welcoming warmth of the house she was sharing with Finn - another shock, since Dani clearly remembered the group mourning him early in her relationship with Santana. But Finn was at work, so it was just the two of them, and Dani thought it would be easier that way. She didn't know Finn, but she was pretty sure he wouldn't want to listen to them talk about her relationship drama.
"This place is really nice Rachel," she said with a genuine smile. "It seems like you."
