Being forced to dagger Kol hadn’t been easy on Klaus. With the birth of his daughter, family had become even more important to him than ever before. But, Elijah had been right, Kol was too far out of control to have this matter handled any other way. After he’d driven the dagger into his brother’s heart, sending him into that deep slumber that only the removal of it would wake him from, Klaus had helped secure the casket in the location they’d chosen beforehand. Once it was sealed, all that was left was for Bonnie to do her magic to ensure no one would disturb his resting place and he didn’t find it necessary to stick around for that. Instead, he’d departed, roaming the streets of Portland, noticing the things he’d seen mentioned on the net. Perhaps they really were the zombies the others had taken to calling them, he wasn’t sure, but they certainly weren’t human. Their stench burned his nostrils, decaying flesh and bodily fluids. It was disgusting. He’d decided to seek solace in his home, instead, better than to chance whatever these things were. Though, it was that solace, that inability to concentrate that had driven him nearly mad. He couldn’t just stay there, in the silence, alone with his own thoughts. He couldn’t stare at that empty crib and drink his liquor any longer.
Klaus had to do something.
The decision was made, though deep down, the plan had been there all along. It had just been silenced by the loudness of his own mind. He needed to find his sister, not only to tell her about Kol and see his daughter, but she’d been gone for so long, he actually missed her. Klaus had also decided to track down his sister’s errant fledgling. He’d read the network and seen the news of her arrest, though he’d been too wrapped up in himself and his own issues to address it properly. He would track her and Dani down as well and deliver them to Rebekah, where they would be safest. Not that the young vampire couldn’t handle herself, but Klaus had seen Dani’s plea, both asking whomever had been behind the sorority fire to come clean so that Santana might be released from jail and also desperate to find Rebekah. He hadn’t bothered to even answer her, but he would find them nonetheless and bring them to his sister.
It hadn’t taken him long to track the new vampire down, she wasn’t quite versed in the proper techniques of hiding and she’d been less than pleased to see him, immediately going on the defensive. But he’d produced a peace offering, presenting her with a human to feed from, explaining she would need more strength than she was likely getting from her rapidly depleting supply of blood bags. This had gotten him an angry glare from Dani, but Santana had eagerly accepted, desperate to keep her new wife safe from the infected population of the city. Once she’d fed and compelled the girl to find her own safety and to steer clear of those roaming the city, looking for others to infect, they departed the hotel Santana had them hiding in and set out to find Rebekah.
Klaus knew his sister well, they had a bond, not to mention the bond he felt to his own daughter and after some time, he finally tracked them down to an undisclosed location. It was very much Rebekah’s tastes, though, and he smiled as he pulled up in front of the rather large, expensive home. Santana had started to question him, curious as to how he knew for sure Rebekah was inside, but Klaus waved her off, telling her no one knew his sister as he did. He instructed them to follow him, but to hang back and wait as he checked the interior.
Silently, he slipped inside, making his way up the stairs to where he could hear a soft voice. It was, without a doubt, Rebekah’s voice and he paused by the door, listening as she told Clara a fairy tale of her own creation. It made him smile as he stood there, by the partially open door, and he could no longer keep his presence a secret. Though he suspected perhaps Rebekah might’ve sensed him all along.
“That’s quite the tale you’re telling her, sister.” Klaus said, pushing the door open further, with a smile, his eyes falling immediately on the infant in his sister’s arms. She’d grown so much since he’d seen her last, though it had been only a matter of weeks. “I trust I’m the King in that story and not the villain.” He teased, his eyes lifting back up to Rebekah’s. “Hello, sister.”
“Hello, brother,” Rebekah replied, in the same quiet tone of voice she’d been using for her storytelling. An average human may have been surprised by Klaus’s sudden appearance in the doorway of the nursery she’d set up for Clara, but Rebekah had heard him the moment his car crunched up into the gravel driveway. But she hadn’t let that deter the story she’d been telling to soothe her baby niece, instead continuing on, knowing that Klaus came in peace this time and would not purposefully disturb this moment.
It had been a bit of an adventure being on her own with Clara, even if it had only been for a little over two weeks now. While Rebekah had loved and doted on this little girl from the moment she was born, she had never really spent this length of time with her. There were challenges, but it was also a great joy to have her and watch her as she grew -- and so quickly! She had even made sure to find someplace (more than) suitable to take care of. She was absolutely not going to take care of her niece in some run-down motel or a small, cramped apartment. So, she’d compelled the older couple that lived in this house to leave the country for the next three months and settled Clara in that very night.
With the little one now asleep, she stood, placing Clara carefully in her crib and attaching the baby monitor she’d purchased to the waistband of her slacks. She pressed a finger to her lips, flicking the light off in the doorway and stepping out in the hallway with Klaus. She let the door close quietly then gestured downstairs, falling into step beside her brother as they made their way down into the large, comfortably furnished living room. While the furnishings weren’t quite Rebekah’s tastes, she’d left them alone. They were rich and luxurious and that was more than enough to satisfy her.
She smiled when she saw Santana and Dani waiting downstairs -- one on the couch, the other (Dani, of course) examining one of the paintings on the wall. She waved her fingers toward the kitchen, her way of telling Santana that there were blood bags waiting in the refrigerator, before taking a seat on the couch.
“Is this my sign that you and Hayley are capable of being responsible parents again?” she asked, turning her attention directly to Niklaus. She hadn’t been checking the network often, so she was a bit out of the loop. And while she did wonder why Nik had brought Santana and Dani with him, she would focus on that later on.
Klaus pressed his lips together, arching a brow as his gaze settled on Santana, who took both his and Rebekah’s cues and grabbed Dani by the hand leading her into the kitchen. Dani had looked a little confused, but Santana gave her a look and she waited until they were in the kitchen for her explanation. The truth was, Klaus needed to speak to Rebekah privately for a moment, to fill her in on their brother and what he’d had no other choice but to do.
“Not quite.” He responded, once the other two were out of the room, though he suspected Santana could still hear him very well and was probably listening. He paid no mind to that, though, and moved over to stand near the fireplace, clasping his hands behind his back. “Hayley is dealing with some things of her own and well, I’ve my own issues, which should be no surprise to you sister. While I have made things right with the little hunter and even compelled her to protect us and re-establish the treaty, there are other matters that make it rather unsafe for Clara to return at this time.” Klaus took a deep breath, hating to have to tell her this news. But it had to be done.
“I’m afraid Elijah and I have had to put Kol in a coffin, dagger firmly in place.” He started, his light eyes meeting hers. “It would seem as if our brother has had quite a taste for chaos in this city. He’s made quite the name for himself and was a liability for the safety of our family, namely my daughter. It had to be done. I thought you should know.”
Just the mention of the dagger was enough to make Rebekah’s body tense. Although she knew in this instance, it wasn’t a threat to her, she had been daggered so many times throughout the year that simply hearing the word was enough to put her a bit on edge. She wasn’t, however, all that surprised to hear that Kol had been put to rest for the time being. While she loved her older brother dearly, he was definitely something of a troublemaker. “What sort of chaos?” she questioned, although she thought she already knew the answer.
“It would seem Kol was the one responsible for the deaths of those girls in the sorority fire, though he had no intentions of coming forward to admit his guilt. Instead, he was content to allow your fledgling to continue sitting in jail for the crime.” Klaus explained, crossing his arms and leaning against the mantle. “That would be more news you perhaps weren’t aware of. Santana was arrested for the crime, it would seem there was evidence to link her to the crime, though you’d need to speak to her to further clarify matters on that situation. I trust you’ll handle that and ensure she doesn’t become a liability like our dear brother, yes? I won’t need a dagger if she continued to put our family in any sort of jeopardy, though I won’t hesitate to handle matters should you be unable or unwilling.” He pressed his lips together, giving her a serious look and continued. “Kol was also responsible for nearly killing Steve, or Portland’s Sweetheart as I’ve taken to calling him.” A smirk was at his lips now, amused by his own comments. “Those are the biggest reasons for the decision Elijah and I made. It was a necessity, sister, he was growing more and more volatile as each day passed. I couldn’t allow him to continue. Not when Clara is already in danger and our name has already been sullied enough.”
Rebekah hadn’t the slightest idea who Steve was or why her brothers had apparently taken such a liking to him that they daggered Kol because he had harmed him, but she was very angry to hear that Kol had intended to let Santana sit for his crime. Surprised, no, but very angry. Santana was still just a child, and it wasn’t as if the police would be able to take any real action against Kol. The brother she knew would brag of his crime, not let the credit fall to someone else.
“Then perhaps it was best,” she agreed with Klaus, nodding when he brought up Clara. She had worried when Kol first arrived that his presence would put Clara’s life in danger. And while Hayley had asked Rebekah to leave with Clara because of the trouble she herself and Klaus were causing, Kol, she was sure, would have only added to the mix. She would not tolerate that, and she knew Niklaus and Elijah would not either. It was a comfort to know that, at least, Kol was no longer dead. He was here and alive, just neutralized for the time being. Perhaps she would be able to persuade her brothers to wake him up in another fifty years or so.
“Now what is all this nonsense with that Argent girl?” she asked, just barely holding back the exasperated sigh that came to the surface.
Klaus had steeled himself, awaiting the tantrum or yelling that was likely to happen, but instead, Rebekah had understood. She’d even agreed that he and Elijah had made the right choice, or at the very least had given them the benefit of the doubt that they had made the proper decision. He relaxed, giving her a grateful look. He simply didn’t have the energy at the moment to argue with her. He wanted to explain things and then, asleep or not, he wanted to spend some time with his daughter.
Except Rebekah had to go and bring up Allison Argent. He frowned pushing off the mantle and turning away from her. “It’s nothing. I fixed it, I gave the girl back her memories and I don’t wish to speak further on the subject.”
“The girl was the very reason I was sent to hide with your daughter, Niklaus,” Rebekah said, her tone of voice a bit sharper than it had been before. “I think the least I’m owed is a bit more of an explanation than ‘I don’t wish to speak about it’.” The last bit was said a bit mockingly; as if she cared that Nik didn’t want to speak about it. She wanted to know, so she would know, one way or another.
Klaus frowned or rather scowled at his sister but he was in no position to argue. She was right, she’d been sent off for the very reason she was asking about. He owed it to her to explain, not that he usually cared what he owed anyone, but this was his sister and she had his daughter. Perhaps she also caught him feeling rather vulnerable and sentimental as well. “Very well.” Klaus said moodily, turning back to face his sister. “It seems that Hayley was discovered by our little hunter, being rather naughty and she locked the girl up in a storage unit. I took her, found her different lodgings so that I could allow time for the vervain to leave her system. Then instead of wiping her memories of the events that occurred, I decided to save the young girl further complications in her life and I removed all her memories.” Klaus shrugged as if it were no big deal. “Now she has them back. End of story. Does this satisfy your curiosity, sister?”
Rebekah sighed. Although she was grateful to have been kept out of what she was sure had been a world of drama, it was also extremely aggravating to have been left out of the loop. She had already known about Hayley, but Niklaus’s actions had only made things worse, and she wished she had been informed past her departure. But, she had dropped off the map of her own free will, so perhaps she didn’t have much room to be angry.
“Alright,” she agreed. “And what brings you here tonight? And with Santana?”
Klaus raised a brow, the amused smirk returning to his lips and he let out a soft chuckle. “It would seem, dear sister, that your naughty little fledgling decided to end her incarceration earlier than expected.” He was both amused and annoyed by Santana’s behavior, though he did mean what he’d told Rebekah; if she couldn’t get her under control, he would be forced to handle matters his own way. Santana, however, would not meet the same sort of fate Kol had, hers would be much more permanent. Perhaps she was made by an original, but she was not like them. “I believe Santana should be the one to explain herself on that matter. I thought, perhaps, she and the human girl would be much safer in your company. Now, sister, if you’ll excuse me, I’ll allow you to properly question your errant child as I tend to my own.”
Nodding at her, he started for the stairs and made his way up to the room Rebekah had turned into Clara’s nursery. He stood there for a few long seconds, watching his daughter sleep, before he reached in and lifted her out. “Hello, love. I’ve missed you.” He whispered, pressing a soft kiss to her cheek as he took a seat in the rocking chair.
Rebekah rolled her eyes but smiled as Nik departed and she heard him speaking to Clara upstairs. She knew Klaus had missed Clara, and Clara had certainly missed him. She may still be an infant, but she certainly knew her family, and she knew her mother and father were missing. She trusted him to look after his own daughter while she dealt with her own errant child, as he’d so aptly put it.
“Well,” she called out, a sigh in her voice. “Get in here and tell me what sort of trouble you’ve gotten yourself into!”
Hearing Rebekah calling for her, though she knew it was coming (she’d been eavesdropping, come on!), had surprised Santana still. She gave Dani a look and took a breath before obediently making her way into the living room where Rebekah sat waiting expectantly. “It’s not my fault Detective McBitchy decided to pull us into the station and arrest me because of some stupid security tapes. Then her boy scout sidekick wouldn’t even let me freaking call my wife.” Santana said, plopping down on the couch next to her and shrugged, patting the spot next to her for Dani to sit. “That bitch has had it out for me since she fucking questioned me, just ask Dani. Tell her, babe.”
Dani wasn’t too fond of Rebekah, and she definitely didn’t want to be answering to her, but it didn’t seem like she had much of a choice. Santana worshiped the ground Rebekah walked on (even if she didn’t want to admit it) and if she wanted to know something, Santana would tell her, even if she pretended to act bitchy while doing so. “There was circumstantial evidence,” she told Rebekah, looking up at the blonde vampire. “Someone couldn’t control herself because… someone else decided she could control herself when she can’t. So they threw her in jail, but the detective did seem kind of… gung-ho?”
Rebekah pursed her lips as Dani spoke. It was really no secret that Dani didn’t care for her, and that was fine with her. She didn’t need Dani to be fine with her. Santana was her concern. “I suppose I could compel you again. If that is what you wish,” she said, turning to her fledgling. Dani’s criticism wasn’t going to coerce her into doing anything. Santana could make these decisions for herself.
“Circumstantial evidence being that I kinda compelled and fed from one of the girls that ended up being one of the victims in that sorority fire. The one I guess I had your psycho brother to thank for. Thing 2, not 1.” Santana said, with a roll of her eyes. “Anyway, I wouldn’t ‘cooperate’ or whatever, so the bitch threw me in jail and no one would respect my fucking rights. Just because I drink blood doesn’t mean I don’t have any rights. I was supposed to have a phone call, but they wouldn’t let me and they wouldn’t let Dani see me when she came by either. It was totally fucked.” She frowned, brushing some of her long hair over her shoulder. “Anyway, Speedy was ripe with guilt, so I compelled him into letting me go and giving me a snack before I left. I can’t say it sucked either, I was like freaking Speed Racer on that shit.”
Santana shook her head after giving Dani a look and turning her attention back to Rebekah. “No, I don’t want to be compelled again. Dani’s just pissed I fed on someone that wasn’t her.” She smirked, arching her brow at her wife. “Since we forgot the vervain, maybe we can get back to that again, babe. Then you can stop pouting.”
“I’m not pouting!” Dani protested. “I don’t care if you feed from someone.” Which, well, she did. But that really wasn’t the point here. “I care that you feeding from other people landed you in jail, Santana!” It had scared the hell out of her to know that Santana was in jail, alone. Probably not especially scared, because she was a vampire, and there wasn’t anything much scarier than a vampire in that station. But it had been scary for Dani. “And I care that that detective thought you were abusing me and feeding from me against my will. Maybe if you’d stick to the blood bags like she” -- here she gestured in Rebekah’s direction -- “started you off on, you wouldn’t have all these problems!”
Rebekah watched quietly as the two of them seemed to have a silent glaring contest after Dani had finished speaking. “Alright. What’s done is done, isn’t it? I’m sure the Portland Police Department has more pressing matters to attend to than an escaped vampire, given the hostility that’s been in the air lately. And it isn’t as if you’ve left a trail of bodies for them to follow so why don’t we all relax. The two of you can lay low here with Clara and myself until this thing passes, and then we will sort out the rest of your mess.” She shot Santana a look, arching an eyebrow. “Understood?”
Santana was angry at the way Dani was speaking to her, at the things she was saying. It was evident by the way her arms were crossed defensively over her chest and her jaw was set in that resting bitch face she was almost infamous for. Santana gave good bitch face, she was pretty proud of that, because she was a bitch. A huge one, at that. But as Rebekah lectured, giving her that look, that warning look that told Santana her sire meant business, she frowned looking like a scolded child. “Fine. Whatever.” She spat out, with a dramatic roll of her eyes. “Is that okay with you, Danielle?”
“Fine,” Dani murmured. “Can we just pick any room?” she asked Rebekah, and at the vampire’s nod, she left the room, heading toward the stairs Klaus had disappeared up when they’d first arrived. She wasn’t really angry; just frustrated, tired and scared. But at least now they had some place to rest and recover without worrying the police would find them or the supposed zombie epidemic would hit them.
“Well, well, trouble in paradise already?” Rebekah questioned Santana with a smirk. It was evident that Dani was frustrated, and Rebekah couldn’t say she blamed her. But she had signed on for a lifetime of this sort of thing, and she’d have to get used to it if she truly planned to honor her vows.
Santana’s frown grew deeper when Dani practically huffed out of the room without even a word to her, heading upstairs and into one of the rooms. She could hear the door close and the springs on the bed as Dani laid down. She couldn’t believe she’d just walked out like that; then again, she was probably tired, it wasn’t as if either of them had really gotten any sleep since Santana had forced Dani to come with her after she’d escaped (thanks again, Barry) from jail. Between worrying about the police coming after them and this whole virus thing turning people into freaking zombies, and whatever stress Dani had pent up that she wasn’t sharing, it hadn’t been the easiest time. For either of them.
“She’s pissed, I told you.” Santana said, dryly, rolling her eyes yet again. “And, I compelled my way out of jail and had to pretty much force her to come with me, she didn’t even want to. Plus the zombie freakshow going on out there. It’s just been hard on her, I guess.” She shrugged. “I didn’t know that detective said that shit to her, though. Fucking bitch.”
“Then go talk to her,” Rebekah replied, as if this was the most obvious solution in the world. If there was something Dani wasn’t sharing, there had to be a reason, and Santana would have to be the one to dig it out of her. It wasn’t Rebekah’s responsibility, and frankly, she had no inclination to make it hers.
“Fine.” Santana said, standing up from the couch and giving Rebekah a look that was somewhere between annoyed and grateful. “Thanks…you know, for…yeah.” She shrugged, leaving the blonde vampire sitting there as she climbed the stairs and headed for the room she could hear Dani’s heartbeat coming from. Opening the door, she closed it behind her and stood at the end of the bed, looking at her wife for a moment. Not that Dani had bothered to look at her or even acknowledge she was there. “What the hell, Dani? Are you going to tell me what the fuck is going on or what?”
Dani wasn’t purposely ignoring Santana. She was tired and had her arm over her face, trying to calm her mind and keep it from racing. She had so much she was worried about, so many people. She hadn’t wanted to leave town when Santana broke out of jail, but refusing had gotten her nowhere and refusing wasn’t really cool when your wife had just broken out of jail because she was worried about you, was it? But it didn’t make this (or the time before that, when Santana had been in jail) any less trying or stressful. She should have known Santana would become frustrated with her though and approach it in her usual tactless manner.
“Babe, I’m just… I’m just tired,” Dani murmured, moving her arm away. “These past couple of weeks has been really stressful.”
“You don’t think I know that?!” Santana snapped. Sometimes she still didn’t have the best control of her emotions. Then again, that was the same even before she’d become a vampire. That had only made her worse. “You don’t think I’ve been stressed out too? Jesus, Dani, I was in jail! I was so worried about you, I compelled some guy to let me out and to let me feed from him and you know what? He was actually like, really nice. I think I might even feel kinda bad for it or whatever. But, all I could think about was you. I wanted to make sure you were okay and keep you safe. That’s all I could think about.” She sat down on the edge of the bed. “Why didn’t you tell me about that stuff? She really said that to you?”
Dani felt the guilt settle heavily in her chest so instead of arguing back, she chose to focus on what the detective had said to her that day. “She asked if you were feeding from me and told me I didn’t have to be afraid. She saw some old scars on my neck. But I told her I asked you to, and she didn’t ask me any more questions.” She smirked a little, looking down. It hadn’t really done much for her in the moment, but looking back on it, it had been kind of satisfying how quickly that had shut Max up -- even if she’d gone on to basically scare the hell out of Dani.
Santana couldn’t help the proud grin that settled onto her full lips s Dani smirked. That was her girl, taking a page out of her book, saying something inappropriate to shut someone the hell up. “Did you tell her how much you got off on it too?” Santana teased, crawling up onto the bed, hovering over her wife, basically pinning her down against the mattress. “I bet you gave her some serious wet dream material or you know, something for...later.” She teased, with that smirk taking the place of her grin.
Dani had to laugh, feeling her whole body just relax underneath Santana’s. “Nope. I save that stuff for you,” she murmured. She had said enough to get Max off her back, at least in that instance. She didn’t think her intimate matters with Santana needed to be discussed with anyone else. “Now, go get Presley out of the backyard and come back to bed. I’m tired,” and as if she’d summoned it, she yawned.
Santana arched a brow, siding off Dani’s body with a sigh. Truth be told, she was tired too and before they’d gotten here, she’d been hungry. Thank God Rebekah had been prepared for that. But, now that they were here, they could finally relax, at least more than they had been able to. She made her way down the stairs, to get the dog so they could try and get some rest. She was sure there would be more talking with both her wife and her sire once they’d woken up. Santana was so looking forward to that. Right.
