I wrote this as a break from the angst of the main story--not as bad as poor Jeff and Jensen, but still a lot of misunderstandings and wrong assumptions from both sides. I can tell you, though, that David and Jason originally buy Joe sort of on the fly, because they're going to a meeting and they need to have a body slave. Joe's 37 when they meet, and he's been a slave since he was four or five.
What caught me so about the Kept verse is that PT does such a good job of dealing with the way the system affects and twists everyone, masters and slaves, and asking what it means to be an ethical person in a society where human life has been so devalued.
