I, uh, hope you don't mind a little angst.

There was a certain look Cloud developed that always clued Leon into what he was thinking. Not just an expression; but a stance of his body – a leg arched forward, a dipping shoulderblade. Barely discernable from his usual movements, but Leon had fought Cloud often enough to know when his body deviated from its normal pattern of movement.

Cloud would stalk away into the Bastion’s quiet streets and Leon would, if talking to someone, make a quiet apology and follow after him. It was never really a chase, as such, but Leon was always the one following, Cloud was always the one whose back was turned.

Easy enough to lay a hand on those shoulders, easy enough to remain unseen – it was still much too close to the end of the war for people to trickle into the back and byways of the town. Cloud never fought back; he knew who was following – the invitation he’d issued and the cadence of Leon’s steps easing his hatred of someone at his back. Cloud never fought back, but he tensed. Once or twice in the first few steps of this dance Leon had taken his hand away then, scared he’d misread, scared to push his presence. Cloud had merely wrapped fingers around Leon’s wrist; the closet he would ever come to saying, this is alright, this is fine.

Leon unclipped, unzipped, Cloud’s uniform and never left him fully naked. Boots or gloves or his trousers around his knees – he is too aware to ask for complete vulnerability. Cloud never complained of the small injuries he gets from his spine pushed against cold brick, his arse on the flagstones.

Neither of them make room for sentimentality – the nearest they get is when Leon runs his tongue up and down and over Cloud before taking him in hand and pumping roughly, rawly, until Cloud comes. Cloud arched his head onto Leon’s shoulders and closed his eyes, running his fingers through the spikes at the back of Leon’s neck; drifted into thinking about hair like that, but longer, but darker.

He kept his eyes closed as Leon rubbed cool fingers into him, coated with whatever useful liquid he had found in his pocket. The fingers separated into points clustered around that spot and Cloud stirred, despite himself. Leon withdrew his fingers and pulled Cloud onto his lap – careful to only use his hands to steady the other man, not to hold, not to caress. Gripping Cloud’s biceps Leon moved deeper; both of them silent but for the sound of flesh on flesh. Leon orgasms in white lipped quietness and Cloud relaxes, the hard angle of his closed eyes smoothing out.

As always, Cloud moved first. He eased off of Leon; his only points of contact being Leon’s groin and his biceps, which Cloud held for balance only. He wiped himself off brusquely and dressed with his back to the wall. He laid one hand on Leon’s shoulder as the other man began the motions of leaving, and Cloud said nothing at all as he wended down other back paths, away from the acrid aftertaste of lust in the air.

Leon had never thought to pursue him after the deed was done. Had he managed to do so, every time, he would have seen one tiny motion that he had never seen Cloud make before – a hand beseechingly raised up, fingers splayed. He wouldn’t have heard Cloud say; “’I’m sorry,” or “Zack,” or even “forgive me.” No. Cloud only whispered them in his head as he lowered his hand. He was too tired of saying things to open air, reedy and weak, and fracturing a little more every time he had no answer.

I didn't expect the writer to mention Zack but how could you guess?.. How did you guess that Zack/Cloud is the OTP, and also that the prompter loves hints to somebody else, somebody third in a relationship? You can read people's thoughts, can't you?

Cloud was in an extremely difficult position, even though he was the one on top.
