At first, Nate looked doubtful when Audrey told him she knew about shitty lives. Looking at her, he wouldn't guess she'd had a bad past. Audrey wasn't like him or Madison, whose bad past was almost painfully obvious to Nate. Audrey was put-together and refined. And yet Nate did know Audrey was in ExB for a reason, just like him, so there was more than likely more to her than met the eye. He was also aware that a bad past didn't guarantee failure, but the people who rose above their station in life were few. Throughout his own life, he'd met plenty of intelligent men who could have done great things - if they hadn't been irreparably fucked up by past events that had driven them to commit crimes. In Nate's own case, Lady Luck just hadn't liked him very much.
He remained silent in reply to Audrey's should-be uplifting words, skeptical of them. Did he know what he wanted other than not wanting to go back to prison? Or not wanting to die penniless, old, and alone? Those weren't goals as much as they were scenarios to avoid.
"I was a actor," Nate said, after some quick thinking. The more he lied the more false information he had to remember, but half-truths were more flexible. "Nothing famous," he added, "small-time stuff. I wanted to get out of the business but I don't got many skills." It didn't feel very good to admit, but it wasn't a lie. Still, after saying that, he didn't feel much like talking anymore.
