He was so charmingly naive; if the faint surprise in his voice was any indicator, he must have thought America was the only country with legalized prostitution, when really, America was like the slowly modernizing backwards cousin, always late to the party. She didn't have the heart to correct him. Yet. "Maybe it is," she agreed instead. "I don't know much about how Americans do it." Legally, at least.
"No, I was born in Sydney," Audrey told him. No point in lying; her voice gave away the fact that she was a native Australian, and she didn't think someone who seemed so out of touch would have seen any kind of news coverage on the debacle that had driven her into hiding in the first place. "Traveled a bit, but I always came back to the city. It's a good place to live, for the most part. You'll have to visit one day."
And then... he asked her about kangaroos. Her first instinct was to laugh; it had sort of come out of nowhere, but she couldn't blame him for his curiosity. "On occasion," she said, deciding to tell the truth. "It's a lot more common in grocery stores now than I was when I was younger. Steaks, sausages... it's a good substitute for ground beef. Healthier, too. It's always been pretty popular in pet food, too. Cats love it."
