"Maybe it's the same in Reno," Nate replied, a hint of lasting surprise over hearing Sydney also had legal brothels evident in his voice. In America, legalized prostitution was a big deal, even if it was highly regulated. He only knew that much because he'd overheard people talking about it once upon a time.
Nate had been about to ask Audrey if she'd ever eaten a kangaroo before, but she beat him to steering the conversation by pushing the subject of his current residence. "I moved there. I was born in a place called Ely. Same state." It didn't bother Nate to admit that much, but he did wonder why he was telling the truth at all when he could have thought up some convincing lie. Sometimes people could figure things out and he didn't understand how, which meant he might be giving someone smart clues to things he didn't want to talk about. But Nate's life had always mostly been about bluffing, so he frequently fell into that pattern.
"Did you move to Sydney?" he asked, not really caring, but it seemed like the normal flow of conversation. "And," he added, unable to help it, "do people eat kangaroos in Australia?"
